To show the lesson name inside the video, add a text source to your OBS scene and update it when the lesson changes. To change the title shown on YouTube’s live event page, edit the stream’s metadata in YouTube Studio. These are separate tasks: changing one does not automatically change the other.

Choose where the title should appear

  • In the video: Add a text or browser source in OBS. Viewers will see it as part of the stream image.
  • On YouTube: Edit the live event’s title in YouTube Studio. This changes the platform-facing metadata, not the video image.
  • In both places: Update both outputs when each lesson begins if you want the on-screen label and the YouTube event details to match.

YouTube Help explains how to edit encoder stream details in stream settings or while scheduling a stream: YouTube Live streaming settings. The YouTube Live Streaming API also treats the broadcast and transmitted stream as distinct objects; broadcast metadata includes a title. Using the API requires an authorized, developer-built workflow: YouTube Live Streaming API.

Add a lesson title overlay in OBS

1. Open the scene that goes to the live stream

In OBS Studio, select the scene used for the education stream. In the Sources panel, add a text source using the text option available for your operating system. OBS documents sources as the elements that make up a scene: OBS Sources Guide.

2. Enter and format the lesson name

Type the current lesson title, then position and size the source in the preview. Keep it within the video frame and away from important teaching content. Check its appearance against the actual scene: text that is readable over one background may disappear over another. The OBS source guide covers adding, arranging, and transforming sources.

3. Update the text when the lesson changes

Someone or something must supply the new lesson name. The straightforward workflow is for an operator to edit the text source at each transition. OBS does not, by itself, know which lesson is currently playing from a timetable. The reviewed OBS documentation describes text and browser sources, not a built-in schedule-to-title connection.

If the lesson change also requires a different visual layout, prepare a separate scene for that layout. OBS Studio Mode lets an operator prepare a scene and transition it to the live output; see the OBS overview. If only the title changes, keeping the title source in the existing scene avoids changing the whole layout.

Use a browser source for a web-maintained title

If your title graphic is already a web page, or a web workflow maintains it, add an OBS Browser Source and point it to that page. OBS describes the source as: “Add a web page to your scene.” (OBS Project, Sources Guide.) The browser source displays the page; it does not ensure the page knows the current lesson. You still need a reliable way to update the page, such as an operator editing it or a custom integration connected to your schedule.

Choose this approach when the title design or update process belongs on a web page. For a single manually updated label, a text source is more direct. Neither option should be treated as automatic schedule integration unless you have configured and verified that integration yourself.

Keep the overlay and YouTube title in sync

  1. At a lesson transition, update the OBS text source or the data feeding your browser-source page.
  2. If the YouTube live event should display the lesson name, update its title separately in YouTube Studio.
  3. If lessons have different layouts, prepare the next OBS scene and transition it using Studio Mode; otherwise leave the scene in place and change only the title source.
  4. Confirm the title is legible in the outgoing video and that the YouTube event shows the intended metadata.

For schedule-driven changes, the connection between the timetable, overlay, and YouTube metadata is an implementation you must provide. The YouTube API can manage broadcast metadata, but it does not establish a turnkey connection from a lesson schedule to both the overlay and event title.

StreamNeo is a YouTube service for keeping uploaded videos live in a continuous stream; it does not go live from a camera. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. For an education stream, the lesson title still needs to be part of the video or managed through your own overlay workflow; StreamNeo does not automatically read a lesson timetable and update a title graphic.
