To show recent activity on a YouTube livestream in OBS, add an Events List overlay as a Browser Source. Use an Alerts overlay instead if you want individual pop-ups to appear as events happen: the two widgets serve different purposes. OBS does not provide alerts itself, but its Browser Source method does not require plugins.
Choose between a recent-events list and pop-up alerts
- Events List: keeps several recent events visible together, so viewers can scan activity that has already happened.
- Alerts: displays an event notification when it happens. This is better for a momentary on-screen acknowledgment, not a persistent activity history.
OBS explains that it does not directly provide stream alerts; an overlay provider supplies the widget, and OBS displays it in the scene through a Browser Source. See the OBS alerts FAQ and OBS stream layout tutorial.
Add an event overlay to OBS
- Choose the display behavior. At your overlay provider, select an Events List widget for a continuing list or an AlertBox/alerts widget for individual notifications. Confirm that the widget supports the YouTube events you intend to show; the cited documentation does not establish a complete cross-provider list of supported event types.
- Create or configure the overlay. Use the provider’s editor to add the widget and set its appearance. For alerts, configure event-specific text, graphics, and sound as needed. StreamElements documents these options in Creating Alerts in the Elements Editor.
- Copy the overlay URL. The provider should give you a URL for the configured overlay. Keep it available for the OBS step.
- Add it to the intended OBS scene. In OBS, select the scene where the activity should appear. In the Sources panel, choose + > Browser (or Browser Source, depending on the displayed label), create a source, and paste the overlay URL into its URL field.
- Set the source dimensions. Enter width and height that fit the overlay area in your scene, then position and resize the source in the preview. An incorrect URL or unsuitable dimensions can make an overlay seem missing or place it outside the visible composition.
- Check the composed scene. Confirm that the widget sits in the intended position and that its text, graphics, and sound settings suit the stream. OBS says alerts do not require plugins.
Use StreamElements for a YouTube-specific setup
StreamElements documents a YouTube route using a YouTube theme and a browser-source overlay. Its SE.Live Tutorial for YouTube, dated May 8, 2025, describes connecting the YouTube account, selecting a YouTube theme, configuring the AlertBox, and adding the overlay URL as a Browser Source. The guide’s theme instructions say to leave Super Chat enabled among the alert options.
- Connect the YouTube account in the StreamElements setup and select a YouTube theme.
- Configure the AlertBox and the event options you want. Follow the guide’s instruction to retain Super Chat among the alert settings for that theme.
- Copy the overlay URL and add it in OBS as a Browser Source in the scene where it should appear.
- Review the scene’s placement and dimensions, and check the provider’s alert settings if notifications do not appear.
For a custom widget rather than a preset, StreamElements’ Widget Events documentation describes event callbacks and data, including recent-event information. Use that route only if you need to build or customize the widget behavior; the cited docs do not establish a full current comparison of every provider’s event support.

Troubleshoot a missing list or alert
- The overlay is not visible: Check that the Browser Source URL is correct and that its dimensions and position place it inside the visible scene. StreamElements lists overlay URL and resolution among its troubleshooting checks in Overlays Troubleshooting.
- The overlay appears, but alerts are silent or absent: Check whether alerts have been muted or paused, then review the widget’s event settings.
- You see pop-ups but no persistent history: You likely added an Alerts widget. Replace or supplement it with an Events List widget if viewers need to see several recent events together.
- The list appears but does not show the event you expect: Check whether that event is enabled and supported by the selected provider and widget. The cited sources do not establish a complete list of supported YouTube events across providers.
