To show a widget on selected WordPress pages, first identify your theme type. In a classic theme, open Appearance > Widgets and use a visibility plugin’s page rules. In a block theme, use the Site Editor and place the block in the template or template part that controls those pages. WordPress’s built-in device-visibility controls only change visual display; they do not protect private information.
Identify whether your site is classic or block-based
Your editing path depends on the theme.
Classic themes
Classic themes provide widget areas such as a sidebar or footer. WordPress introduced the block-based Widgets Editor for classic themes that support widget areas in version 5.8. You may therefore see either block-style widgets or older, traditional widgets under Appearance > Widgets.
Block themes
Block themes do not use traditional widget areas, so the old Widgets menu is intentionally absent. Their layouts are edited through Appearance > Editor (the Site Editor), using templates and template parts.
Show or hide a widget on selected pages in a classic theme
When one widget area must vary from page to page, use a conditional-visibility plugin rather than creating duplicate sidebars.

Configure Widget Visibility Control
- Install and activate Widget Visibility Control from the WordPress plugin directory.
- Go to Appearance > Widgets and open the sidebar, footer, or other widget area that contains the item.
- For a native block widget, open the block’s right-hand settings sidebar and find the plugin’s Visibility panel.
- For a classic widget, or a widget edited through the Customizer, use the plugin’s Visibility button.
- For a Legacy Widget block, open the classic visibility controls inside that block.
- Choose an inclusion or exclusion rule, select the relevant front page, blog page, specific page, or 404 page, and save the widget area.
The plugin listing describes support for block widgets, legacy widgets, classic widgets, and the Customizer. Those are publisher-stated features, so confirm that the controls match your current WordPress and theme versions before relying on them.
Choose inclusion or exclusion deliberately
- Show only on these pages: use an inclusion rule when the widget belongs to a small, known set of pages.
- Hide on these pages: use an exclusion rule when the widget should appear almost everywhere except a few pages.
Check the live page while logged out or in a private browser window. Caching, theme-specific wrappers, and a second widget area can make an old version appear even after the rule is saved.

Use the Site Editor in a block theme
In a block theme, page-specific placement is usually a template decision rather than a widget-setting decision.
- Open Appearance > Editor.
- Open Design > Templates (the exact label can vary by WordPress release) and identify the template used by the target pages, such as a page, single-post, archive, or front-page template.
- Open the template or a reusable template part such as the header, sidebar-like area, or footer.
- Insert or select the block you want to display.
- Save the template. Every page using that template will receive the block.
If the block should appear on one class of content but not another, use separate templates or template parts. For example, a block placed in a single-post template can appear consistently on post pages without being added to ordinary pages. A WordPress support discussion describes this approach, but it is guidance rather than formal feature documentation.

When a more advanced conditional plugin is useful
Some sites need rules that page targeting alone cannot express. Widgets Control describes inclusion and exclusion rules and lists post-type, page-hierarchy, role, group, and archive conditions among its Pro features. Check the current plugin listing for the exact free-versus-paid split before choosing a plan.

Compare plugins on exact inclusions and exclusions, support for your editor and legacy widgets, required condition types, current compatibility information, maintenance activity, and the price of any required feature. Directory descriptions are publisher claims; they do not establish that one plugin is faster or objectively better.

Do not confuse visual hiding with access control
Block settings can omit a block from published content or hide it by device. Device-hidden content remains in the page code and may still be available to screen readers, search engines, or anyone inspecting the HTML. It is therefore unsuitable for passwords, customer data, paid material, or any other confidential information.
To restrict who can see content, edit the page or post’s visibility and choose Public, Private, or Password protected. These page-level settings control access; widget rules only control where a component is rendered.

Troubleshoot a widget that appears on the wrong page
The Widgets menu is missing
You are probably using a block theme. Open the Site Editor and edit the applicable template or template part instead of looking for a traditional widget area.
The visibility control is not shown
Confirm that the visibility plugin is active, then identify whether the item is a native block widget, a classic widget, or a Legacy Widget block. Each interface can expose a different control. Also check whether the widget is being edited in the Customizer rather than under Appearance > Widgets.
The rule saves but the widget still displays
- Make sure the page uses the widget area or template you edited.
- Check for a duplicate copy in another sidebar, footer, header, or template part.
- Clear the site, page, and browser caches and test while logged out.
- Review whether an exclusion overrides an inclusion rule.
- Temporarily disable other conditional-display extensions to find conflicting rules.
Visitors can still find hidden information
That is expected when you used device hiding or a visual block setting. Move sensitive material behind WordPress’s private or password-protected page visibility, or use an appropriate authenticated-content system.
