To show the current song or video title, your playback setup must expose which playlist item is playing, pass that title to an overlay, and include the overlay in the video sent to YouTube. A server-run player does not automatically provide this label: playlist playback, title metadata, overlay rendering, and livestream delivery are separate parts of the workflow.
How the now-playing title gets onto the stream
- Playback identifies the current item. The process running or scheduling the playlist needs to know which video is active.
- That item’s title reaches an overlay. The title might come from the player’s current-item state or, for a tool designed for it, from chapters or a tracklist in a video description.
- The overlay is composited into the outgoing video. In OBS, a browser source is one documented way to render web content in a scene. The scene, including the title, is then sent to YouTube.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API reference describes managing broadcasts and stream resources; it does not document a function that automatically displays the current item from a YouTube video playlist. Keep broadcast management separate from playlist state and overlay rendering.
Choose an approach based on where the title comes from
Use tracklist metadata when the playlist is inside a video
The OBS Forums resource Music on stream describes overlay inputs that include YouTube chapters and a playlist in a video description. This approach is relevant when the music or track names are represented in that metadata. Its listing is a third-party description, not an independent compatibility test or proof that it can read the state of a separate YouTube playlist.
Consider a playlist player with a title option
The OBS-Youtube-Player GitHub project describes playing a YouTube playlist in an OBS browser source and optionally showing the current song name and author. Treat it as a project to evaluate, not as a verified or officially supported solution. Its current maintenance, compatibility, and ability to run unattended on your particular server are not established here.

Do not assume OBS media playlists are YouTube playlists
OBS’s media-source documentation describes playlist controls for media sources that handle media files. It does not establish that those controls play a YouTube-hosted playlist or expose its current title.
Build and verify the workflow
- Identify the actual player. Confirm what process plays or schedules the YouTube playlist and whether it runs on the server, in OBS, or elsewhere. A desktop setup that happens to use a server for stream delivery is different from a genuinely remote or headless player.
- Confirm the title source. Determine whether your chosen method reads the active playlist item directly or relies on chapters or a description tracklist. If the required metadata is absent or does not match the playback order, a title overlay may be missing or incorrect.
- Establish how the overlay receives state. For an OBS browser source, check how the chosen tool supplies the title to the web content. A custom server arrangement may require a local endpoint or another state-sharing mechanism, but the cited sources do not verify a particular endpoint protocol for this use.
- Add the renderer to the outgoing scene. In OBS, place the overlay browser source in the scene being sent to YouTube, then position and size it so it remains readable without covering important video content. Confirm that the browser source is visible in the encoded program output, not merely in a separate preview.
- Test privately before relying on it. Check an item change, a long title, a pause, a playlist transition, and a reconnect. Confirm that the displayed title follows the audio or video that is actually playing and recovers correctly after interruption.
Evaluate candidate tools on metadata availability, whether playback truly runs remotely or headlessly, how current-item state reaches OBS, behavior after reconnects, and customization. These are practical checks suggested by the tools’ described capabilities, not measured compatibility results. Verify the chosen player, operating system, OBS environment, and playlist format in your own setup.

Keep YouTube HLS separate from a video playlist
YouTube’s HLS setup guidance concerns live-stream ingestion and transport through media segments. An HLS segment playlist is not a playlist of YouTube videos, and HLS ingestion guidance does not provide a now-playing title overlay for a YouTube video playlist.

- The title never appears: Check that the selected tool supports your actual title source and that the overlay is present and visible in the outgoing scene.
- The title stays on the previous item: Check whether the player exposes current-item changes and whether the overlay receives those updates. A static title or a tracklist that does not match playback order cannot follow transitions reliably.
- The title is wrong for the audio: Compare the playlist order and the metadata the overlay reads. Chapter or description-based methods depend on that metadata representing the content being played.
- It works locally but not unattended: Confirm that the server can run the player and browser-source environment for the full session, and that the title-state path remains available without a logged-in desktop session. The cited project descriptions do not establish headless operation.
- The overlay stops updating after a reconnect: Test recovery for both playback and the title renderer; a stream reconnect alone does not prove that playlist state and overlay state have resynchronized.
- You expected OBS’s media playlist control to play YouTube videos: The OBS documentation cited here concerns media files handled by media sources, not a guarantee of YouTube playlist support.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Showing a title does not establish that you have permission to stream the underlying music or video. Before broadcasting, make sure you have the necessary rights and review YouTube’s current policies for your content and channel. An overlay that reads chapters or a description changes how metadata is displayed; it does not grant music rights or make reused material eligible for monetization.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream rather than a server-managed YouTube playlist with a synchronized title overlay, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option for uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer at home, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not provide a camera feed, and it does not establish the now-playing overlay workflow described above. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
