If the address remains a plain link, the site probably lacks a provider that WordPress allows for oEmbed. For those pages, use a link-card plugin that reads Open Graph metadata instead.
What WordPress calls a link preview
A native embed pulls supported content from another service into an Embed block. You may see an interactive result for providers such as YouTube or X/Twitter. A generic link card is different: it displays metadata—normally a page title, description, image and site name—and sends the reader to the external page.
WordPress does not provide an “all links” preview switch. Its standalone-URL behavior is conditional, and its oEmbed system uses an internal security allowlist.
Try the built-in block editor first
- Open the post or page in the WordPress block editor.
- Insert a new paragraph or other empty block.
- Paste the complete external address, including
https://, by itself on the new line. - Wait for WordPress to recognize the address. It may replace the URL with an Embed block or preview.
- Review the block’s available controls, then publish or update the page.
WordPress documentation states that pasting a URL alone “may create an Embed block or preview instead, depending on the URL.” If the URL stays as text, that result is normal rather than evidence that the editor is broken.

When you want linked text instead
Do not paste a standalone URL when you want a sentence or button to link normally. Select the text, choose the Link control, or press Ctrl+K on Windows/Linux (⌘+K on macOS), then enter the full address.
Why a URL remains a plain link
- The destination does not have a WordPress-supported oEmbed provider.
- The URL pattern is outside WordPress core’s internal allowlist.
- The remote page exposes incomplete, blocked or unusable metadata.
- The service does not permit the kind of content WordPress can safely embed.
WordPress limits discovery for non-whitelisted sites. Discovered HTML and video are filtered to safer links, blockquotes and iframes and are sandboxed with additional restrictions. Do not treat disabling those protections or granting broader unfiltered_html access as the default fix.

Use a plugin for generic external-page cards
When a page has no supported oEmbed provider, a plugin can fetch metadata and render a card. These plugins depend on what the remote site publishes, so no card solution can guarantee a complete or current preview for every URL.
OpenGraph Fallback Embed
The plugin directory listing describes an “OpenGraph Embed” Gutenberg block that can show a page title, description, image and site name. It also documents an automatic fallback when WordPress cannot find an oEmbed provider.

- Open Graph tags.
- Twitter Card tags.
- The HTML
<title>and<meta name="description">values.
The listing says fetched metadata is cached for seven days. It also says the plugin does not override another embed provider, preserves the original WordPress output when none of its metadata sources are available, and allows styling through the .og-fallback-embed CSS class. Those are documented behaviors, not a guarantee for every theme or remote site.
Custom Card Link – OGP Blog Card Block
This plugin documents a Gutenberg block for internal and external blog cards. Internal links use WordPress post data; external links retrieve Open Graph metadata when available. It offers card and list layouts, caches retrieved metadata and refreshes it asynchronously.

Its documented setup is:
- Install and activate the plugin.
- Add the Custom Card Link block.
- Enter the target URL.
- Choose the layout and adjust the design settings.
When accessed, the directory listing displayed version 1.1.5, 10+ active installations, WordPress 6.9 or higher and testing up to WordPress 7.0.4. Directory details change, so verify the current compatibility, update history and support status before installing it.

Developer options when you control the site
Add an oEmbed provider
For a service that supports oEmbed but is not in WordPress’s allowlist, a developer can use wp_oembed_add_provider() to register the provider and its URL format. This keeps the result within WordPress’s provider model.

Register a custom embed handler
If the service has no oEmbed endpoint, WordPress documents wp_embed_register_handler(). A callback then generates the HTML for matching URLs. The callback should return only the markup you intend to allow and should preserve WordPress’s security expectations.
Troubleshoot a missing preview
- Check the input: paste one complete
https://URL on an otherwise empty line. - Test the provider: try a known supported service to distinguish an editor problem from an unsupported destination.
- Inspect metadata: for a generic card, confirm that the remote page exposes usable Open Graph, Twitter Card or title/description tags.
- Check caching: a plugin may show older metadata until its cache refreshes; OpenGraph Fallback Embed documents a seven-day cache.
- Check compatibility: review the plugin’s current WordPress-version support, maintenance activity and theme behavior.
- Keep security enabled: do not broaden HTML permissions merely to force an external embed.
What readers should expect
A native preview is conditional and provider-based. A generic card is metadata-based. If the destination supplies no supported provider and no usable metadata, the dependable fallback is an ordinary text link.
