Show the applicable customer price with GST included prominently in your YouTube Live product demo, say that total aloud, and keep it consistent in the video, description, pinned chat and any product listing. The right tax treatment depends on the product and transaction; confirm the current price and GST treatment with the merchant rather than assuming GST applies to every supply.
What price should viewers see?
For a consumer sale where GST applies or is likely to apply, the advertised customer price should generally include GST. The ATO notes that the precise Australian Consumer Law requirements depend on the facts of the supply: ATO guidance on GST-inclusive prices. The ACCC advises businesses to state the total price and consider how prominently it appears. Medium, size, placement, colour and font can affect prominence; see its Advertising and selling guide (July 2021).
For a live demo, a practical approach is to put the customer-facing total on a high-contrast graphic or lower-third, say the amount includes GST, and use the same amount in the description, pinned chat and product listing where applicable. Make the figure readable over the footage and leave it on screen long enough for viewers on smaller screens to read. These are production recommendations based on the ACCC’s total-price and prominence guidance, not a YouTube-prescribed overlay format or legal minimum font size or display duration.

For a standard fully taxable supply, the GST contained in a GST-inclusive amount is 10/11 of that amount—not 10% of the inclusive price. For example, a $22 inclusive price comprises $20 before GST and $2 GST. This calculation follows section 9-75 of the A New Tax System (Goods and Services Tax) Act 1999, which also gives a $22,000 taxable sale example with $2,000 GST.

Do not apply the 10/11 calculation automatically to GST-free or input-taxed supplies, or where special calculation rules apply. Verify the treatment of the particular product and transaction before presenting a tax breakdown. The amount customers see should be the applicable total price, not a tax component calculated on an assumption.
Prepare the price presentation before going live
- Confirm the current price and treatment. Check the merchant’s current customer price and whether GST applies to this specific supply. If a promotion is involved, confirm its terms and dates as well.
- Build a legible price card or lower-third. Put the total customer price in a clear, high-contrast position that does not obscure important product details. Test it against the footage and at a small-screen size.
- Say the total clearly. State the amount and that it includes GST. If showing a discount, distinguish the ordinary price from the discounted price and explain any conditions.
- Match every customer-facing surface. Check the on-screen graphic, spoken amount, video description, pinned chat and any tagged product listing. If the merchant updates the price, update the relevant surfaces rather than relying on a stale overlay.
- Check the display as a viewer. Confirm that the amount remains readable during the relevant product segment and that any link or product tag leads to the intended item.
Use YouTube Shopping without relying on it as the only price display
Eligible creators can tag products featured in a livestream and may pin a product. Availability depends on YouTube Shopping eligibility, geography and product availability; tags may not appear in some circumstances, including certain content or monetisation restrictions. YouTube also says that changes made during a stream may not be visible to some existing viewers. Its desktop guidance recommends making product rearrangements or removals at least 30 minutes before the broadcast. Keep the price graphic useful on its own rather than assuming every viewer can see a product tag or shopping panel. YouTube’s buyer guide describes product shelves and tagged items; a purchase may take a viewer to the retailer’s site. Under YouTube’s Shopping support policies for buyers, the retailer or marketplace determines the final price and applicable fees and taxes. Check that the amount shown during the stream is aligned with the retailer’s current customer-facing price, while making clear that checkout is controlled by the retailer.
Explain discounts and tagged-product promotions carefully
If a tagged product has a sale-price annotation, merchant promotion or price-drop badge, state which price applies and any relevant conditions. YouTube documents these features and eligibility requirements, including promotion management through Shopify and Google Merchant Center in certain cases. Troubleshoot price-display problems
