Use OBS Studio to send one continuous program to a scheduled YouTube Live event, switching from each prerecorded session to a sponsor scene and back. Create a Media Source scene for each talk, an Image or Image Slide Show scene for sponsor graphics, and rehearse the transitions before the event.
How the workflow fits together
YouTube Live receives the encoder’s outgoing program. OBS controls that program: it plays the session videos, displays sponsor artwork, and switches between them. Schedule the event in YouTube Studio, connect OBS with the event’s stream URL and key, then check the preview before going live. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this scheduled-stream workflow.
Build the session and sponsor scenes in OBS
Create a scene for each prerecorded session
- In OBS, add a scene for the first talk and give it a clear name, such as “Session 1.”
- In that scene’s Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source. Choose the local video file and confirm it fits the canvas.
- Repeat for each talk if you need precise control over when one ends and the sponsor segment begins. Media Source supports common video formats and playback options including looping and restarting when active. For a one-time event, check the playback settings so a finished talk does not unexpectedly restart.
OBS can also use a VLC Video source for a playlist with a loop setting, but VLC must be installed. A playlist can simplify sequential playback; separate scenes make it easier for an operator to choose exactly when sponsor slides appear between talks. Create the sponsor scene
- Add another OBS scene and name it “Sponsor.”
- For a single sponsor graphic, add an Image source and select the image file.
- For several graphics, add an Image Slide Show source. Configure whether slides change automatically or manually, the slide duration, transition, playback order, and whether the sequence loops.
- Check that text and logos remain legible at the stream’s output size. If a sponsor has a required display interval, set the slideshow timing or have the operator hold the scene for that interval.
The Image Slide Show source is intended for rotating images; its timing, transition, looping, and order options let you adapt it to the agreed sponsor sequence. OBS Image Slide Show documentation explains its controls.

Choose the right playback and slide method

OBS scenes can combine sources and use transitions such as a cut or fade. During the show, use the preview/program workflow to check the next scene and then make it live. OBS scenes and sources documentation describes scenes and transitions.
Schedule the YouTube Live event and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and use Manage to schedule the event. Set the title, privacy, and event details. A scheduled event can be promoted, and viewers can receive reminders.
- Open the event’s streaming setup and copy its server URL and stream key into the corresponding stream settings in OBS.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not share it publicly; use the event’s key only in the encoder you intend to stream from.
- Start OBS and begin streaming to YouTube. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming feed and inspect the preview before selecting Go live for the scheduled event.
Follow the labels shown in the current YouTube Studio interface, which may change over time. The event’s preview is the practical check that OBS is connected to the intended scheduled stream before you make it public.

Run the event: session, sponsor, next session
- Start with the opening scene or first session scene and confirm the program appears correctly in the YouTube preview.
- When a talk ends, switch to the sponsor scene. Hold it for the agreed interval, or let the configured slideshow rotate through the sponsor images.
- Switch to the next session scene and confirm its video and audio are playing as expected.
- Continue the session-to-sponsor-to-session sequence. Keep an operator available to handle unexpected pauses, a video that ends early, or a required timing change.
- At the end, end the stream in Live Control Room, then stop streaming in OBS.
OBS provides scene transitions such as cut and fade. Choose the transition that suits the event, then check it in rehearsal so the change is intentional rather than a surprise to viewers.

YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before a livestream and starting it at least fifteen minutes beforehand. It also recommends test streams and checking the preview. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.

- Play every video from beginning to end, including its final seconds, and verify the next scene does not appear too early or the talk does not restart unexpectedly.
- Practice each switch into and out of the sponsor scene, including the selected cut or fade and any slide-show timing.
- Check audio during each talk and while the sponsor scene is displayed. Confirm that a source does not leave unintended audio playing under the sponsor graphic.
- Inspect the YouTube preview and the public or unlisted watch page as applicable. Confirm that the picture, sound, and sequence look right from the viewer’s side.
- During the event, monitor stream health and the watch page rather than assuming a successful OBS connection guarantees a healthy public feed.
Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived by YouTube. If you need an archive, confirm the event’s outcome afterward rather than relying on the automatic archive for a stream that reaches or exceeds that duration. YouTube’s scheduled live stream guide covers scheduling and archiving.
Keep the sponsor sequence separate from YouTube’s break slate
YouTube Live Control Room’s Take a Break away slate is for temporary breaks; it is not a timed sponsor sequence between prerecorded sessions. Build the sponsor interval in OBS as a scene so it appears in the continuous program where you need it. YouTube documents the away slate, including its encoder browser-source overlay, in its Live Control Room help.

Troubleshooting common show-day problems
- YouTube preview does not show the OBS program: Check that OBS is streaming, that the server URL and key match the scheduled event, and that the correct event is selected. Wait for the feed to appear before going live.
- The talk repeats or continues under the sponsor slide: Check the Media Source playback and looping options, and make sure the sponsor scene is actually selected as the program output rather than only previewed.
- Sponsor slides change at the wrong time: Review the Image Slide Show’s automatic or manual mode, duration, order, and looping settings. If the interval must follow the talk precisely, use a separate scene and switch it manually.
- A slide is missing or unreadable: Confirm the image source points to the intended file and inspect the scene in OBS and YouTube’s preview at the stream’s output size.
- A playlist source will not play: VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source. If installation or playlist behavior complicates rehearsal, use separate Media Source scenes instead.
- A session ends unexpectedly: Check the source file and playback behavior, then switch to the sponsor scene or next planned scene rather than leaving an unintended blank or repeated frame on air.
