Keep the YouTube livestream title stable and descriptive, and show the changing episode name in an on-screen “Now Playing” overlay driven by the playout system’s current-item metadata. YouTube documents a title for each broadcast, which represents one YouTube video; its API does not describe that field as a changing label for episodes within one continuous broadcast. YouTube Live Streaming API

Use the broadcast title for the stream, not each episode

Give the livestream a title that identifies the overall event or channel, such as “Bedtime Stories Live 24/7.” For the episode currently playing, use a separate on-screen label. The distinction matters because the YouTube Live Streaming API describes the broadcast title and description as broadcast metadata and says a broadcast represents one YouTube video. It does not establish that changing the broadcast title is a way to label each episode as a continuous stream plays.

For children’s content, also review the broadcast’s audience settings in YouTube Studio or through the API. The API includes selfDeclaredMadeForKids as a field that can be set when inserting a broadcast and madeForKids as an indication of child-directed designation. Use YouTube’s current audience settings and guidance to classify your own content; the field names alone do not determine how a particular channel should be classified. YouTube Live Streaming API

How to add a changing episode label

  1. Clean up episode titles in your media library. Give every story a short, consistent title, such as “The Moonlit Garden” or “Episode 12: The Lost Kite.” Do not rely on filenames. Playout.video’s overlay documentation warns that when title metadata is missing, a filename may appear instead. Playout.video Now Playing overlay guide
  2. Choose playout software or an overlay that can access the current item. Confirm that it reads the metadata format used by your media library and can pass the current title into the stream composition. That connection depends on your particular setup; the available product documentation does not establish compatibility with every playout tool, overlay, or streaming destination.
  3. Add a compact Now Playing element to the output. Playout.video documents an overlay that displays the current video or track title and updates as the content rotates. Its guide says the text comes from the media metadata, so correcting the library titles is part of the setup—not an optional finishing touch. Treat this as a documented feature of that product, not an independent performance evaluation. Playout.video Now Playing overlay guide
  4. Check readability on actual story frames. Preview the label over both bright illustrations and busy backgrounds. Use strong contrast and a background bar if needed. Test the longest episode title for wrapping, truncation, or overflow, and position a persistent label away from important artwork and text. Playout.video Now Playing overlay guide
  5. Choose when the label appears. The documented overlay supports an always-visible behavior and a transition-only option. Keeping it visible can help viewers who join midway identify the story; showing it at transitions covers less of the picture. Choose based on how much of the story art the label obscures and how viewers use the stream.
  6. Verify a complete episode change in the stream output. Preview a transition and confirm that the label changes to the next episode’s correct title. Check the actual output rather than relying only on the editor canvas, which may not reflect what viewers receive.

Which approach fits your setup?

Approach What it does What to check
Stable YouTube broadcast title Names the broadcast/video. The API does not establish it as a per-episode label for one continuous show. Use it for the overall live event; use a separate display for the current story.
Automated Now Playing overlay Playout.video documents a title overlay that updates as content rotates and can be styled to remain visible or appear at transitions. Check media metadata, title readability, overlay placement, transition behavior, and integration with your specific stream setup.
OBS 24/7 Playout workflow The project repository describes playlist or rundown playback and a Now/Next display with progress and upcoming-video information. Confirm compatibility with your operating system and stream destination, maintenance status, setup needs, and whether the display can be placed where viewers need it. The repository page does not resolve these points for every setup. 24/7 Playout for OBS repository
Manually changed graphic A possible fallback, but not an automated solution. Plan for operator workload and the risk of leaving the previous episode name on screen.

Keep captions separate from the episode title

A Now Playing label identifies a story; it does not transcribe the audio. YouTube documents live captions using caption data embedded in the video or delivered through supported software. Its requirements include a one-caption-feed-per-stream-entry-point constraint. If your stream needs captions, configure and verify that caption path separately rather than treating the episode label or a title card as a substitute. YouTube live caption requirements

Or let it run in the cloud

If you are building a YouTube livestream from uploaded story videos, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Your video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. You still need clean episode metadata and an overlay or display connected to your playout workflow to show the current episode name; StreamNeo is a YouTube streaming service, not a camera-based production tool.
