To show different prerecorded videos on a continuous YouTube Live stream, send YouTube a live feed from a playlist-capable encoder or streaming service. Create a YouTube live stream, enter its stream URL and key in the playback system, then test the sequence and audio before making it public. A computer can run the feed locally, or a cloud service can keep it running without a home computer.

Choose how the videos will play

The important choice is where the videos are queued and the outgoing feed is encoded: on a local computer, in the cloud, or on dedicated hardware. Confirm that your chosen setup can play the required sequence, loop or schedule files, and recover unattended; a generic encoder is not automatically a 24/7 video-library player.

Route What it does What to verify
Local software A computer runs the playback workflow and sends the live feed. YouTube lists OBS as free, open-source recording and live-streaming software. Verify playlist rotation, looping, restart behavior, and unattended recovery for the specific OBS workflow you plan to use. YouTube’s encoder guide does not establish that a stock OBS installation automatically rotates a library indefinitely.
Cloud service A service plays and sends the feed remotely, so a dedicated home computer is not required. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. Check the provider’s current formats, playlist and scheduling controls, recovery behavior, plan limits, and cost.
Dedicated hardware YouTube documents the AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream feature for scheduling prerecorded media and streaming it directly to YouTube Live without a computer. Check device compatibility and current capabilities; dedicated hardware may be more than a basic channel needs.

These options are identified in YouTube’s encoder guide. It does not establish current vendor prices or plan limits for third-party services. If you choose local playback, a mini PC is one possible host, but no minimum specifications are established here; confirm that the computer can reliably play and encode your files before buying it.

Prepare the channel and video rotation

Check live-stream eligibility early

Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to enable, so do not leave activation until the planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup guidance.

Build and test the sequence

  • Put the videos in the intended order and confirm the player or service supports the sequence you need, including looping or scheduled changes.
  • Listen to the start and end of each file, check audio levels across transitions, and look for gaps, black frames, or unexpected pauses.
  • Keep track of the rights for every video and music track in the rotation; a continuous stream does not remove the need to clear each item.

Connect the player to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream and set the relevant stream options, such as latency, DVR, and auto-start or auto-stop, as needed. Controls available depend on the stream setup; YouTube documents them in Manage live stream settings.
  2. Copy the stream URL and key. The URL is the destination for your outgoing feed; the key authorizes YouTube to accept it. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. A custom stream key can be reused, but reuse it only in systems you control.
  3. Configure the playback system. Add the URL and key to the encoder or service, select the video sequence, and set the desired output format. For hardware or cloud services, follow that provider’s instructions as well as YouTube’s.
  4. Send a test feed and inspect the preview. Use an unlisted or otherwise suitable test stream, check video and audio in Live Control Room, and confirm that the next video plays as expected before opening the broadcast to viewers.
  5. Start and monitor the stream. YouTube recommends configuring an encoder at least two hours before a scheduled livestream and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. These are preparation recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation. Check the preview and quality, and have a response plan if the feed stops.

Use stable encoder settings

YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection to its servers, constant bitrate, H.264 for standard live encoding, and a two-second keyframe frequency. Supported settings can depend on the protocol, encoder, and stream configuration, so check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and the documentation for your selected player before applying a profile. Do not assume that a setting supported by one device or service is available in another.

Prevent copyright interruptions

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including other broadcasts. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; if the matched content continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. YouTube also says that a rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist even when you have a license. Check YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Before putting a video into rotation, confirm that you have the rights needed to stream both the video and its music. YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for having necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights, and for meeting applicable legal and regulatory requirements. A license should not be treated as a guarantee against automated interruption; check Content ID allowlisting with the rights owner when relevant.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
You cannot start a live stream The channel is not eligible, live streaming has not finished enabling, or a restriction applies. Check verification and recent restriction status. If this is your first stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
YouTube does not receive the feed The stream URL or key is wrong, the encoder is not sending, or the selected connection settings are incompatible. Re-copy the URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm the encoder is running, and compare its protocol and settings with YouTube’s current guidance.
The first video plays, but the next does not The playback workflow may not support automatic rotation, looping, or the selected playlist format. Test the entire sequence before going public and verify the chosen software, service, or device’s playlist and restart controls. Do not assume a generic encoder handles this automatically.
Viewers hear silence or uneven audio A file may have missing audio, different levels, or a transition problem. Check each file and transitions in a test stream; monitor the Live Control Room preview and the outgoing feed.
The live feed is replaced or interrupted YouTube may have detected third-party content, or the feed may have stopped. Review YouTube’s copyright notice and resolve rights or Content ID allowlisting with the rights owner. Separately inspect the encoder or service and its recovery controls.
The stream stops while unattended The computer, connection, encoder, or playback process may have failed. Check logs and restart or failover behavior. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover when available and monitoring quality; these recommendations do not guarantee that a particular setup will run indefinitely.
