To show the current song on a 24/7 YouTube lofi stream, add a now-playing overlay to your streaming scene and connect it to a source that supplies track metadata. OBS does not automatically know which track is playing just because you are sending a live stream to YouTube. Choose an overlay based on how the music actually plays: a browser extension for supported YouTube or YouTube Music playback, a local music overlay app, or a YouTube Music desktop-app bridge that writes metadata to OBS text and image sources.

What a now-playing overlay needs

A track label has two parts: metadata that changes with each track, and a visible element in the stream scene. Your encoder sends the composed video to YouTube; it does not, by itself, create or transmit the current track title to OBS.

YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Its encoder setup guide explains copying the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room into the encoder, but does not describe a built-in mechanism for displaying the source playlist’s current track. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Choose an approach for your playback source

Approach Playback and metadata OBS display Operational consideration
Music on stream The OBS Forum listing says it supports YouTube and YouTube Music, using YouTube chapters or video-description playlists as title inputs. Browser overlay Depends on the player and playlist/chapter format matching the extension’s supported inputs.
YouTube Music desktop-app bridge Metadata from the YouTube Music desktop app through its Tuna OBS plugin. Native text and image sources reading generated files Requires a local receiver process; the documented example leaves the last title visible if the app closes.
Streamling The repository says it detects supported players, including YouTube and YouTube Music in browsers. Local web overlay Confirm the current instructions and exact player combination; long-run unattended operation is not established.
Media-library Now Playing element A managed library supplies file metadata to a playout platform. Built-in composition/editor element Platform-dependent; not a direct method for a browser playlist feeding OBS.

Tool descriptions above come from their own listings or project documentation, not independent compatibility testing. Verify current downloads, supported player versions, permissions, and setup instructions before relying on a tool for an unattended broadcast.

Route 1: Add a browser-extension overlay

For a stream whose music plays in a supported YouTube or YouTube Music browser workflow, the OBS Project Forum listing for Music on stream describes a Chrome extension that provides a now-playing overlay. It says titles can come from YouTube chapters or playlists in a video description, and lists features including theme editing, CSS customization, hiding the overlay when music is paused, and scrolling long titles. The listing was created April 12, 2024, and last updated September 18, 2025; those dates describe the listing, not a guarantee of current compatibility.

  1. Check the extension’s current installation guide and confirm that your actual playback method and title source—chapters or a description playlist—are supported. Do not assume every YouTube playlist format exposes metadata in the same way.
  2. Install and configure the extension as described by its maintainer. Use its provided overlay URL or setup method rather than guessing a URL or extension setting.
  3. In OBS, add the supplied overlay as a Browser source in the scene that is sent to YouTube. Position and size it over the video, and use the extension’s theme or CSS controls if available.
  4. Preview a track change, pause playback, and test a long title. Confirm that the label updates, disappears or behaves as expected when paused, remains readable over the artwork, and does not cover important visual content.
  5. Before leaving the stream unattended, test a browser-source refresh and a playback restart. These checks help reveal whether a stalled page or player session could leave an old title on screen.

Route 2: Use YouTube Music desktop playback with native OBS sources

If the stream’s music comes from the th-ch YouTube Music desktop app, a community GitHub project documents a local bridge: the app’s Tuna OBS plugin sends track data to a Python receiver, which writes a title text file and cover image file. OBS then displays those files through native text and image sources. This is specifically a YouTube Music desktop-app workflow—not a general method for reading the current track from any YouTube browser playlist. The bridge is a community example, not a Google or OBS-supported feature.

  • The new generation of the songwriter's interface: Plug in your mic and guitar and let Scarlett Solo 4th Gen bring big studio sound to wherever you make music
  • Studio-quality sound: With a huge 120dB dynamic range, the newest generation of Scarlett uses the same converters as Focusrite’s flagship interfaces, found in the world's biggest studios

  • Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
  1. Review the bridge project’s README and confirm that its requirements fit your system. The README calls for the YouTube Music desktop app and Python 3.8 or later; Pillow is optional.
  2. Set up the app and its included Tuna OBS plugin according to the project instructions, then start the receiver using the documented manual or user-service method.
  3. In OBS, add a text source configured to read the generated title file. Add an image source pointing to the generated cover file. Follow the README for the actual file locations and source options.
  4. Play tracks and confirm that the title changes and the cover refreshes. Adjust the text box and image placement so that longer titles and differently sized cover art remain legible in your scene.
  5. Test pause, stop, app close, receiver restart, and OBS restart. The README notes that if the desktop app is fully closed, the last track can remain visible because the bridge has no staleness timeout. If that would be misleading, add a suitable clear/timeout mechanism or choose a workflow that hides the label when playback stops.

Route 3: Try a local overlay app

Streamling’s repository describes an app that detects supported music players and serves a local web overlay with the track title and artist. It lists YouTube and YouTube Music in browsers among its sources, and says the overlay can transition or disappear when playback changes, stops, or pauses. The repository describes the app as freeware.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
  1. Check the repository for current downloads and instructions, then verify that your particular browser and YouTube playback method are listed and work with the current release.
  2. Run the app as its documentation directs and add its local web page to OBS as a Browser source.
  3. Preview a track change, pause, stop, and restart. Confirm that the overlay responds correctly and that its local page remains available after the kinds of restarts your setup may encounter.

The repository description does not establish long-run uptime or current release cadence. Treat the overlay as a component to test, not a proven unattended 24/7 service.

Route 4: Use a playout platform’s built-in Now Playing element

A managed-media workflow may already have the right metadata. A vendor help article dated July 9, 2026 describes a composition editor with a Now Playing element for a live channel. It says the element updates when a new track or video starts and can format title and artist or control visibility based on metadata in the media file or library. This route applies to that vendor’s playout workflow; it is not a direct overlay for a browser playing a YouTube playlist into OBS. Consult the vendor’s current documentation to confirm the feature, workflow, and pricing before choosing a platform.

In any library-based workflow, check the title and artist metadata on the files themselves. Incorrect or missing tags will produce incorrect or missing labels. Preview the longest likely title and set the element to wrap, scroll, or otherwise handle overflow in a way that remains readable.

Make the label readable and accurate

  • Use the actual metadata source. Chapters, a description playlist, player metadata, and file tags are different inputs; choose the one your playback and overlay combination supports.
  • Keep it legible. Preview the overlay against the brightest and darkest parts of the video, and check the longest track title rather than only a short sample.
  • Decide what should happen when playback stops. Hiding the overlay, clearing it, or leaving the last track visible are materially different behaviors. Test the one your tool implements.
  • Test the whole unattended path. Check track changes, pause and stop, player and browser restarts, OBS browser-source refreshes, and recovery after the helper app or receiver restarts.

Troubleshooting a missing or stale title

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No title appears The overlay is not receiving metadata, the source is unsupported, or the OBS source is not configured as documented. Confirm the playback source and metadata input, follow the tool’s install guide, and check that the overlay or generated file is reachable from the configured OBS source.
The title does not change The player/extension connection, local receiver, or browser source may have stopped updating. Change tracks deliberately, confirm the metadata file or overlay changes, and restart the relevant player, receiver, or source according to its documentation.
The old title remains after playback ends The tool may retain the last received metadata; this is a documented limitation of the GitHub bridge when its desktop app closes. Test stop and close behavior. Add a clear/timeout mechanism if appropriate, or use an overlay that hides on pause/stop.
Long titles are cut off The text area is too narrow or the chosen overlay does not handle overflow as expected. Resize the source or configure scrolling, wrapping, or truncation; preview a genuinely long title before going live.
Cover art is missing or outdated The image source may not point to the generated file, or the source may not reload when the image changes. Check the bridge’s documented image path and reload behavior, then verify a cover change in the OBS preview.

Keep the stream running without leaving a computer on

If you also want the 24/7 YouTube stream itself to keep running when your own computer is off, StreamNeo is a cloud option for looping uploaded videos on YouTube. It does not read live playback from a camera or create a now-playing overlay from a browser playlist, so arrange the track label in the video or in a compatible overlay workflow separately.
