To show the current video title in a vMix YouTube playlist stream, add a Title input, give its text field a clear name, then display it through an overlay channel. You can update the text manually or use vMix Web Scripting and the API to sequence a text change, overlay-in, delay and overlay-out.
One important limitation: the official vMix documentation cited here does not establish that a playlist automatically passes its current item name to a title field. An automatic now-playing card therefore needs a configured workflow that supplies each title, and you should verify it with your vMix version and playlist before relying on it live.
What you need to set up
- A vMix Title input, using a built-in template or a custom title created in GT Designer. vMix describes Title inputs as a way to add titles and lower thirds, and text can be edited from the input’s right-click menu. vMix Title documentation
- A text field in that title for the program or video name. For a GT title, the API field name includes the
.Textsuffix; for example,Headline.Text. Use the exact name shown in your own Title Editor, not the example name. vMix User Guide - An overlay channel to bring the title on screen and take it off again.
- A way to provide the title for each playlist item. This can be an operator entering it manually or a scripted/API workflow you configure and test.
Add and prepare a Title input
- Add a title. In vMix, add a Title input using a built-in template, or create a custom title in GT Designer and add it as an input. Choose a layout that remains legible over the video in your actual output.
- Identify the text field. Open the title in the Title Editor and note the exact field name for the title text. For a GT title, the API name includes
.Text, such asHeadline.Text. Field names are case-sensitive where the API documentation specifies this, so preserve the spelling and capitalization. - Check the title manually. Use the input’s right-click menu to edit its text and confirm that the desired words appear correctly before you automate anything. This also confirms that you selected the intended field.
Choose how to update the title
Manual updates
For a playlist advanced by an operator, edit the title text when you move to the next video, then bring the title in on the overlay channel. This is the simpler approach when a person is already monitoring playback. Its tradeoff is that the operator must keep the displayed title aligned with the video.

For a repeatable sequence, vMix’s HTTP API supports Function=SetText. Identify the title input by its name or GUID, set SelectedName to the exact text-field name, and pass the new text in Value. The Web Scripting documentation shows that functions can be sequenced with overlay-in, a Sleep delay and overlay-out. Special characters in a URL value may need URL encoding. vMix Web Scripting

Illustrative pattern, based on the documented sequence and not a tested production script:

The pattern changes text that you provide; it does not extract the active playlist item’s name by itself. If you need unattended updates, separately define and test how each item’s display text reaches SetText.
Coordinate the title with playlist playback
vMix PlayList can play inputs sequentially and provides controls including Loop, Manual Mode, Next and Previous. Decide which playback behavior you will use before designing the title workflow: a manually advanced playlist can pair naturally with operator-entered text, while an automatically advancing playlist needs a dependable way to supply the next title. vMix User Guide

The Triggers guide documents OnCompletion for video and list inputs when playback reaches the end, assuming Loop is not enabled. A completion trigger may be useful as part of a configured workflow, but the documentation cited here does not establish that it automatically reads a playlist item’s name and writes it to the title field. Test before going live
- Confirm the title input and exact field name in the installed vMix setup.
- Test a title containing spaces and punctuation; URL-encode special characters where needed in API values.
- Verify the overlay channel brings the title in and takes it out at the intended times.
- Advance through the actual playlist in its intended mode, including any loop or manual behavior, and check that the on-screen title stays in sync.
- If using a completion trigger, verify its behavior with the actual input and Loop setting rather than assuming it advances or updates title text automatically.
