Use OBS Studio to play the VLC playlist and compose the overlay: add the playlist as a VLC Video source, then layer an Image source for the logo and a Text or Browser source for the ticker above it. OBS sends the finished scene to YouTube Live using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio.

What you need

  • OBS Studio to arrange the playlist and overlay and send the finished scene to YouTube.
  • VLC installed on the same computer as OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC; match architectures, such as 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
  • A local playlist and image file for the logo. For a basic ticker, use OBS Text; use a Browser source if the ticker is animated or supplied by a web page.
  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check access in YouTube Studio before your broadcast.

OBS documents the VLC Video source for playlists and Media Source for an individual supported media file. If you only need to play one local file, Media Source is an alternative; its documented video formats include MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and its audio formats include MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Build the scene in OBS

  1. Install VLC and OBS. If VLC Video is missing from OBS, confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
  2. Add the playlist. In OBS, use the Sources panel’s add control and choose VLC Video. Name the source, add the playlist files, and configure playback as needed. This is the source intended for a playlist; use Media Source for a single file instead.
  3. Add the logo. Add an Image source and choose the logo image. Resize and position it in the preview.
  4. Add the ticker. Add a Text source for simple text, or a Browser source when the ticker needs animation or comes from a web page. Resize and position it in the preview.
  5. Set the layer order. In the Sources list, place the Image and Text or Browser sources above VLC Video. OBS renders sources higher in the list over sources below them. Check that each source is visible and that the logo and ticker are not outside the canvas. See the OBS Sources Guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain how to create a stream and connect an encoder.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into OBS’s streaming settings. The stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or show it on screen.
  3. Use RTMPS if available in the stream details. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. Confirm that OBS is using the matching URL and key for the selected YouTube stream. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Choose encoder settings

Use settings that your upload connection can sustain, then check YouTube’s current table for your target resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendation lists 1080p at 30 fps: 5 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended. These are ingest recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection will deliver a stable stream. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance lists frame rates up to 60 fps.
  • Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options. Choose a codec supported by your encoder and verify it against YouTube’s current settings table.
  • Stereo audio: AAC or MP3 is supported; YouTube lists 128 Kbps as the advanced setting.

Consult YouTube’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the target you intend to use. Do not select a bitrate solely because it is listed as recommended; your available upload bandwidth and stability matter.

Test before going live

  1. Start the OBS feed and wait for YouTube’s Live Control Room preview to receive it.
  2. Check that the VLC playlist is playing and the image and ticker appear in the intended positions above it.
  3. Listen for playlist audio and verify it is present at a suitable level.
  4. Use the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators to catch problems before or during the broadcast. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring.
  5. Once the preview looks right, start the broadcast in YouTube Studio if the stream is not already scheduled to go live automatically.

Can VLC add the logo without OBS?

VLC has a logo overlay filter at Tools → Effects and Filters → Video Effects → Overlay, where you can select an image and adjust its position and opacity. VideoLAN also documents command-line logo options. This attaches the logo to VLC’s video output, but it does not by itself compose a separate ticker with the playlist. For the complete playlist, logo, and ticker layout, OBS source layers are the more direct approach. See VideoLAN’s How to add a logo.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC Video is not available as a source VLC is absent or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; for example, use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
The playlist appears, but the logo or ticker does not The overlay source is hidden, out of position, or below the playlist in the Sources list. Check source visibility and move the Image and Text or Browser sources above VLC Video. Reposition them in the preview.
YouTube receives no encoder feed The stream URL or key in OBS may not match the stream selected in Live Control Room. Recheck both values in YouTube Studio and OBS. Keep the key private.
YouTube does not allow the channel to start a live stream The channel may not meet live-streaming eligibility requirements. Check the channel’s verification and restriction status in YouTube Studio before the event.
The feed reaches YouTube but stream health is poor The bitrate may not suit the resolution, frame rate, or available upload connection. Check YouTube’s current encoder table, choose a bitrate your connection can sustain, and test while monitoring stream health.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded videos looping, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and it does not replace OBS when you specifically need to compose a live ticker and logo over a VLC playlist.
