For a holding screen that appears automatically between videos, set up your encoder or playback system to switch to a holding scene or source during each gap, then switch back to the next video. YouTube’s built-in Take a Break feature is for a creator’s occasional, manually ended break—not an automatic recurring playlist transition.
Choose the right kind of holding screen

YouTube’s documentation describes the break overlay, but does not prescribe a universal automatic transition between playlist videos. Check your encoder’s current scene, media-playback, and automation controls, and test the complete transition before broadcasting.
Set up a recurring holding screen with an encoder
- Prepare the sources. Add the video playback source and a holding scene or source containing the screen you want viewers to see during gaps.
- Configure the transition. Set your workflow to switch to the holding source during each gap and return to video playback when the next video begins. Menu names and automation options vary by encoder; use that software’s current documentation rather than assuming one set of steps applies to all encoders.
- Check audio routing. Decide whether viewers should hear silence, music from the holding screen, or another source during the gap. YouTube’s Take a Break overlay does not change the stream’s audio sources; with an encoder-managed screen, check the encoder’s audio routing. Mute a microphone if it should not remain audible while you are away.
- Connect to YouTube. Use the encoder’s YouTube destination if available, or enter the stream URL and key in the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers the connection workflow.
- Preview the full sequence. Check a video ending, the transition to the holding screen, its audio, and the return to the next video. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring the stream before and while live; see its live streaming tips.
Use YouTube Take a Break for an occasional away screen
- Open Live Control Room and configure Take a Break in the stream settings. You can use YouTube’s default slate or choose an eligible video from your channel library.
- Select a duration of 1, 3, or 5 minutes and test the overlay before relying on it during a live broadcast.
- Check audio separately. The overlay does not alter audio sources; audio from a selected library video may play, and an encoder’s settings may need adjustment. Mute any microphone that should not be heard during the break.
- When ready to resume, return to Live Control Room and end the break. The timer expiring does not end it for you.
Because this feature is a manually started and manually ended away slate, it is not the documented way to insert a screen automatically after every video.

Plan for long-stream playback and archives
A 24/7 broadcast is not the same as a guaranteed 24-hour replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s guidance on live stream archives and DVR for live streams.
