The webcam method requires a connected webcam and microphone; an encoder is the more flexible choice for gameplay and multiple sources.
Choose how to share your screen
| Option | What it can share | What you need | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live Control Room webcam sharing | Entire screen, a window, or a browser tab | A connected webcam and microphone | A straightforward browser-based presentation |
| Streaming encoder | Screen or gameplay, with support for a more controlled production and additional sources | A computer running encoder software; external audio or video hardware is optional | Gameplay, overlays, or a screen-led production |
YouTube describes encoders as a way to share a screen or broadcast gameplay. You can use a software application on your computer or standalone encoder hardware. YouTube’s verified-encoder list can help you find options, but those products are not made by YouTube: YouTube’s encoder guidance and verified encoders.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and connection
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says creators must be at least 16. Check your account’s current status in YouTube Studio, since eligibility can depend on account status and policy: Get started with live streaming.
- First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable it well before your planned stream using YouTube Studio’s live-streaming setup.
- For a reliable broadcast, YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom beyond your stream bitrate. Other people and devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream: YouTube live streaming tips.
- Test with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. Preview the feed in Live Control Room and watch stream health and messages during the event: YouTube streaming tips.
Method 1: share your screen with encoder software
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, complete the channel’s live-streaming setup. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours before expecting it to be available.
- Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room. Create a stream or select an existing one, then copy its stream URL and stream key.
- Configure your encoder. Select its YouTube preset if available. Otherwise, enter the stream URL and matching stream key in the encoder’s stream settings. Add the screen or application window as a video source, then configure the audio sources you intend to use.
- Use RTMPS when entering a server manually. Copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and pair it with the matching stream key. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. Confirm that the intended screen or window is visible and that the audio is working before selecting Go live.
- End the stream cleanly. When finished, end the event in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived: encoder setup and stream ending guidance.
Plan a test before the broadcast
YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start. Use the preview to catch the wrong screen, silent audio, or other setup problems before viewers arrive. Keep Live Control Room open during the broadcast so you can monitor stream health and messages.
Method 2: share a screen from Live Control Room’s webcam workflow
- Connect a webcam and microphone, then start a livestream through YouTube’s webcam workflow in Live Control Room.
- After going live, select Share screen.
- Choose the entire screen, a window, or a browser tab in the browser’s sharing prompt, then select Share.
- To finish screen sharing, select Stop Sharing in Live Control Room or use the browser’s stop-sharing control.
A connected webcam and microphone are required for this route. When you share a browser tab that supports webcam, that tab’s audio is shared by default. See YouTube’s webcam livestream instructions.

Troubleshooting screen sharing
- Live streaming is unavailable: Confirm the channel is verified and check Live Control Room for restrictions or incomplete setup. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The encoder is not connecting: Check that the stream URL and stream key both match the selected YouTube stream. If entering the server manually, use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room.
- The preview shows the wrong content or no content: Check the encoder’s selected screen or window source, then wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room before going live.
- Viewers cannot hear the intended audio: Check the encoder’s audio sources during your test. In webcam sharing, tab audio is shared by default only when sharing a browser tab that supports webcam.
- The stream is unstable: Check available upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom beyond the stream bitrate. Pause bandwidth-heavy activity on shared connections where possible, and monitor Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
- You cannot stop sharing: Use Stop Sharing in Live Control Room or the browser’s stop-sharing control. For an encoder stream, end the event in Live Control Room and stop the encoder.
Copyright and what happens to the stream afterward
Only share content you have the right to broadcast, including video, music, and other material captured on the screen. A screen share does not change the rights or YouTube rules that apply to the content. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements and account status before the event. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; end the event in Live Control Room and stop the encoder when you are done.

If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a continuous YouTube stream rather than share a live desktop or camera, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only.
