To share your screen during a live stream, add a screen-capture source to a scene in streaming software such as OBS, check the preview, then start the platform’s encoder workflow. Choose a whole-display capture when viewers need to see several apps; choose a window or application capture to limit what appears. Before going live, check the framing and hide private information.

Before you start: check platform eligibility

Requirements vary by streaming platform. For YouTube, the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the user must be at least 16, according to YouTube’s live-streaming guide. Check your chosen platform’s current requirements before setting up the stream.

Choose what to share

Capture scope Best for What to consider
Full display Demonstrations that move between apps or need to show the whole desktop. Everything visible on that monitor may appear, including notifications, messages, and account details.
Window or application A presentation or demonstration contained in one app. It can reduce exposure of unrelated desktop content. Capture options vary by operating system and OBS version.

OBS documents display, application, and window capture options. Its legacy Display Capture is deprecated on macOS 13 or newer; OBS directs users to macOS Screen Capture instead. On Linux, the guide lists XSHM and PipeWire capture sources. Check the available source names and controls in the OBS version installed on your system: OBS capture-source guide.

Set up screen sharing in OBS

  1. Choose the scene. In OBS, select the scene intended for the broadcast, or create one for the screen share.
  2. Add a capture source. In the Sources area, add a Display Capture source for a whole monitor, or choose an available window or application capture source for a narrower share. Name the source so it is easy to identify later.
  3. Select the target. Choose the correct monitor, window, or application in the source properties. Capture-source names and options can differ across operating systems and OBS versions.
  4. Check the preview and framing. Confirm that the intended content is visible and positioned correctly. A display source captures the entire monitor; OBS notes that overlapping windows can remain visible in its macOS crop behavior.
  5. Do a privacy check. Close personal messages, hide account details, and turn off or silence notifications that could appear on the shared screen. The W3C Screen Capture specification warns: “The user agent is strongly recommended to steer users away from sharing a monitor, as this poses risks to user privacy.” See the W3C Screen Capture specification.
  6. Start the platform’s encoder workflow. Connect OBS to the platform using its encoder setup, then confirm the platform’s preview or live status before presenting. YouTube identifies encoder streaming as one way to stream. Exact bitrate, resolution, and frame-rate settings are not universal: use the current guidance for your platform and account for your connection, hardware, and stream goals. YouTube’s live-streaming guide is at YouTube Help.

Choose the stream format before going live

YouTube describes horizontal and vertical formats, as well as a dual-stream option. Decide which presentation suits the audience and composition before starting: YouTube says vertical format cannot be added after the stream starts. If the screen content is designed for a wide desktop view, check how it will fit the format you select. See YouTube’s format guidance.

Protect the stream from copyright interruptions

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If unaddressed material remains in the stream, YouTube may interrupt or terminate it. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID. Review the rights and permissions for anything shown or played in the broadcast, including music and video, and consult YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Troubleshoot common screen-sharing problems

  • The wrong screen or window appears: Reopen the source properties and select the intended monitor, window, or app. Check the OBS preview again before going live.
  • Private material is visible: Stop or switch scenes if needed, then hide notifications and close sensitive windows. Use window or application capture when the broadcast does not need the whole display.
  • The capture source is unavailable: Check the capture method supported by your operating system and OBS version. On macOS 13 or newer, OBS directs users away from its deprecated legacy Display Capture to macOS Screen Capture; on Linux, its guide lists XSHM and PipeWire options.
  • The stream format is wrong: End or reconfigure before starting the broadcast and select the intended horizontal, vertical, or dual presentation. YouTube says vertical format cannot be added once a stream is underway.
  • The stream is interrupted over third-party content: Remove or replace the material, or resolve the rights issue. If you have a license, check whether the rights owner must allowlist your channel through Content ID.
  • The stream does not start: Check platform eligibility and follow that platform’s encoder setup and live-status indicators. For YouTube, review the channel verification, age, and restriction conditions above.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to play continuously, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not capture a live desktop or camera; it loops uploaded videos, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
