To share a location from Apple Maps, open Maps, tap a place or search result, then tap the Share button on its place card and choose how to send it. That shares a fixed place or pin—not your changing location. To share progress on a trip, use Maps’ Share ETA; to let someone follow your location over time, use Find My or Messages.
Share a place or your current location from Apple Maps
Use this method to send someone a specific destination or a snapshot of where you are. The recipient can view the shared location, but cannot follow you as you move.
- Open Maps and tap a place on the map or a search result.
- Tap the Share button at the top of the place card.
- Choose a destination, such as Messages or Mail, and send it to your recipient.
You can also touch and hold a place on the map, then choose Share Location. If Maps is closed and you want to send your current location, touch and hold the Maps icon on the Home Screen and choose Send My Location. Apple Support’s Maps instructions cover these options.
Share your trip progress and ETA in Maps
Share ETA is for an active route, rather than ongoing location sharing. Apple says it supports driving, cycling, and walking directions.

- In Maps, search for your destination and tap Go to start directions.
- Open the route card at the bottom of the screen and tap Share ETA.
- Select one or more contacts.
Maps updates the ETA automatically if there are major delays. To stop sharing during the trip, open the route card, tap Sharing with, then tap Stop Sharing ETA beneath the relevant contact. Apple also allows contacts to be associated with a pinned place so they can automatically receive your ETA when turn-by-turn navigation to that place begins; the location, route, and ETA remain viewable until you arrive. What the recipient sees
On supported iOS or iPadOS versions, recipients can get a Maps notification and track trip progress in Maps. People using earlier software may receive an iMessage notification; people using other mobile devices receive an SMS. Standard carrier data and text rates may apply. Availability varies by country or region.

If Share ETA is missing
Check that it is enabled in Settings > Apps > Maps. If the option is still unavailable, the feature may not be supported in your region or for your current situation.
Share your ongoing location with Find My or Messages
For someone to follow your location beyond a single trip, use Find My or Messages. Choose a duration so you know when sharing will end.

In Find My
- Turn on Share My Location in Find My, then add the person you want to share with.
- Choose how long to share. Apple’s current Find My guide also describes setting a custom duration or end time.
- To stop sharing with one person, open their entry in People and stop sharing. To hide your location from everyone, turn off Share My Location.
If the other person cannot see your location, check that Location Services is enabled for Find My in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. See Apple’s Find My instructions.
In Messages
Open a conversation, tap Add > Location > Share, choose a duration, then send. This shares your ongoing location; sending a pinned location instead gives the recipient a fixed point that does not update as you move. Apple’s Messages guide has the steps.

Use the duration controls before starting ongoing sharing, and stop it in the app you used when it is no longer needed. Apple says stopping sharing with a person in one app also stops sharing with that person across apps. Its iPhone overview describes Safety Check as a way to review or quickly stop sharing if personal safety is at risk.

If location access is unavailable, review the app’s Location Services permission in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Apple notes that apps with background location access may trigger periodic reminders and show a map of recent access. Read Apple’s Location Services privacy guidance.
