The right way to share UI components depends on how your projects are maintained: use a workspace package when apps evolve together in one repository, publish a versioned package when separate repositories need a common dependency, or install component source when each project should own and edit its copies. Add Storybook to make components easier to discover and understand; it documents and displays components, but does not distribute their implementation.
Choose a sharing model that matches your projects
Before choosing a tool, decide where the code should live, who controls updates, and whether consumers should use shared in-progress code or released versions. These choices determine whether you need a workspace, a package registry, or source installation.
| Approach | Best fit | What consumers use | Main responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workspace package in a monorepo | Apps maintained together in one repository | A package in the same workspace | Define package boundaries, builds, and release discipline |
| Published package | Separate repositories or independently managed release schedules | A released package version | Build, publish, communicate changes, and manage compatible versions |
| Installed component source | Projects that should own and adapt their component files | Files copied into the project or a shared workspace | Decide how local copies receive future updates |
| Storybook | Teams needing examples, usage guidance, and component discovery | Stories and documentation, not implementation code | Keep the catalog and examples useful and current |
Use a workspace package when applications evolve together
In a monorepo, keep shared UI in its own package or workspace and have applications import through that package boundary. Avoid making consumers reach into arbitrary library source paths: a stable package interface makes ownership clearer and makes it easier to change internal files without rewriting every application import.
A Vercel Turborepo design-system example combines a Storybook documentation app, a core UI package, and shared TypeScript and ESLint configuration packages. Its tasks cover build, lint, and release work across packages. Treat this as one demonstrated arrangement, not a requirement for every monorepo.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This model is useful when a component change and its consuming app changes can be developed and checked out together. It does not automatically provide sound package boundaries, build behavior, or release discipline; the team still needs to decide those.
Publish a package when repositories or releases need separation
For consumers outside the monorepo, or teams that need to adopt changes on their own schedule, distribute a built library through a package registry. Consumers then depend on a released version rather than directly using the library’s in-progress workspace code.
Nx distinguishes an ordinary workspace library, intended for direct use by applications in that workspace, from a publishable library intended for distribution outside it. Its publishable generator adds a builder target and produces an artifact ready for publishing; choosing the publishable option does not publish the package automatically. The import path must be a valid package name for this workflow. Nx documentation says the publishable option is for libraries intended for distribution outside the monorepo.

This release boundary gives consumers control over when to upgrade, but maintainers must build and publish releases, communicate changes, and manage version compatibility. Choose this route when that deliberate adoption process is more valuable than using the same in-progress code everywhere.

Install component source when consumers should own the files
Some teams want selected component files copied into an application or shared workspace instead of consuming one centrally compiled library. The shadcn/ui CLI documents this source-install approach: component files can be installed under a UI workspace, imports can be adjusted, and application-specific files for a larger block can live in the app itself.
For a monorepo setup, the workspaces and aliases must be configured so the CLI knows where components, hooks, utilities, and styles belong. The benefit is direct access to the installed source, which consumers can adapt. The trade-off is update ownership: copied files do not necessarily stay synchronized with a central library. Decide how to handle upstream fixes and improvements before relying on source installation across many projects.

Add Storybook for discovery, not code distribution
Storybook can make a shared system easier to browse and use. Its sharing guidance covers publishing a Storybook, embedding stories in a site, design integrations, and composition. These approaches help teams find examples and understand intended usage; they do not make component implementation code available to an application.
Composition between Storybooks
Storybook composition lets a team browse stories from another Storybook within its own Storybook, including across different view layers or technology stacks. This is useful for inspecting prior art and seeing how other teams use a system, but consumers still need a separate way to obtain the component code.
Composition from a published package
Package composition can display stories from a published component library alongside a consumer’s stories when the package supports it. Storybook’s documentation says this requires a secure integration between the publishing service and Storybook APIs and recommends publishing to Chromatic for full support. Package authors configure a Storybook URL in the published package metadata; the documentation also describes version selection for Chromatic-hosted Storybooks. Storybook describes the outcome this way: “Design system authors can automatically compose their design systems inside their consumer’s Storybooks.”

Make the decision with these questions
- Are the apps in one repository? If they evolve together, start with a workspace package. If consumers live in separate repositories, consider a published package.
- Should consumers adopt explicit releases? Choose a registry package when teams need versioned, separately scheduled upgrades. Keep workspace imports when coordinated development matters more.
- Who should own edits? A centrally maintained package suits centrally managed updates. Source installation suits teams that need to edit component files locally, provided they also define an update policy.
- Do you need a built artifact? A package distributed outside its monorepo needs a build and publishing workflow. A generated publishable library is prepared for publishing, not published for you.
- Do developers need a visual catalog? Add Storybook for examples and usage documentation, choosing publishing or composition according to where consumers need to browse.
- Will shared tooling help? If build, lint, test, and release tasks should run across packages, a monorepo tool such as the demonstrated Turborepo setup may fit. The example is not a universal requirement.
Share component screenshots separately from component code
When teams review a shared component or Storybook example, screenshots can help communicate how it renders. They are a visual artifact, not a way to distribute or synchronize the component implementation. If screenshot capture is part of your workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server; it does not replace the workspace, package, source-install, or Storybook choices above.
Or skip the browser setup
One GET request can return a screenshot as PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF. For example, this cURL request captures Stripe; replace the target URL with a page you are permitted to capture. The ScreenshotNeo API documentation covers the request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Storybook share the component code with an application?
No. Storybook sharing and composition expose stories and documentation for browsing; the application still needs a separate code-distribution method.
Does generating a publishable Nx library publish it to a registry?
No. The generator prepares a build target and publishable artifact; publishing is a separate step.
Will source-installed components update automatically when the central library changes?
Not necessarily. Establish an update and ownership process for installed copies rather than assuming they remain synchronized.
