To share a screenshot with an AI agent, attach the image in the chat composer, paste it from your clipboard, or drag the file into the conversation. Then identify what the image shows, point to the region that matters, and state the action or answer you want. If the agent must operate a live browser or desktop, use a computer-use integration that captures screenshots during an action loop instead of treating a single uploaded image as live access.
Choose the right way to give an agent visual context
There are two different workflows:
- Still-image analysis: you upload one or more screenshots and ask a question. The agent can inspect only the pixels you provide.
- Computer use: an application gives the agent a computer tool. The agent requests actions such as screenshot, click, or type; your integration executes them and returns the resulting screenshot. The agent itself does not connect directly to your computer.
Use a still image for debugging an error, explaining a control, checking a layout, or comparing two states. Use computer use when the agent must navigate, enter data, or observe changes over several steps.
Upload a screenshot in ChatGPT
- Open the ChatGPT conversation and click the + menu.
- Choose Photos/files, select the image, and send it with your instruction. You can also drag the image into the prompt area or paste a copied image from the clipboard.
- Wait for the image preview, check that it is the intended file, and submit the message.
OpenAI’s help documentation lists PNG, JPEG, and non-animated GIF, with a 20 MB limit per image. It does not promise one fixed image count for every conversation; practical limits vary with image size and accompanying text. If an image is ambiguous or blurry, the interpretation may be inaccurate. Image performance can also differ for specialized medical images and non-Latin text, so treat the response as assistance rather than guaranteed transcription.
Prompt examples
Explain the error banner in the top-right of this screenshot and give the smallest fix for a React developer.This is a checkout page. Inspect the shipping form, list any visible usability problems, and do not infer fields that are outside the crop.Read the warning text exactly. If any word is unclear, mark it as uncertain instead of guessing.
Upload a screenshot in Claude
- In Claude, click the + button and choose Add files or photos.
- Select the image, or drag it into the chat. You may also paste an image from the clipboard.
- Add a focused instruction and send.
Claude’s help page (July 23, 2026) lists JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP. It documents up to 20 files per chat upload, a 500 MB maximum per file, and image dimensions up to 8000 × 8000 pixels. Claude recommends clear images and suggests at least 1000 × 1000 pixels where possible. For a PDF, pages 1–100 can be analyzed for text and visual elements, while pages 101–1000 are processed as text only; upload an individual screenshot when visual inspection of a later PDF page matters.

Send screenshots from the command line with Codex
ChatGPT Learn documents image input in the web composer and gives these Codex CLI examples:

Write an instruction the agent can actually answer
A screenshot rarely contains enough context by itself. Include four pieces of information:
- Identity: name the application, page, device, or state shown.
- Focus: identify the panel, error, control, or visual difference to inspect.
- Output: ask for an explanation, transcription, comparison, bug list, or minimal fix.
- Boundaries: say what not to infer and how to report uncertainty.
For several images, label each by filename or order and define the operation. For example:

Image 1 is the page before saving; image 2 is after. Compare only visible states, list regressions, and inspect the warning banner first. Do not infer content outside either crop.
If you need a sequence, say whether the images are chronological. If you need text copied, request a verbatim transcription and ask the agent to mark unreadable characters.

Make the screenshot legible without losing context
Capture at a readable scale
Use a non-blurry capture and enlarge text when the task depends on it. Anthropic notes that images may be resized before processing, which can make small text harder to read. Cropping to the relevant section or resizing before upload can preserve useful detail.
Crop deliberately
Remove unrelated tabs, private messages, and empty margins, but leave enough surrounding UI to establish what each label belongs to. A button without its dialog title may be impossible to interpret.

Pixel coordinates depend on the configured display dimensions and image handling of a computer-use integration. Describe a target by its visible label or role when possible; use coordinates only within the same controlled environment and screenshot scale.
Share screenshots safely
A screenshot exposes everything visible in the captured area, not only the region mentioned in your prompt. Before uploading:
- Crop or redact passwords, one-time codes, API keys, financial data, customer records, personal messages, and unrelated browser tabs.
- Check the account’s current data-use and retention settings. OpenAI’s FAQ explains that content-use choices depend on the product and notes that ChatGPT Enterprise content is not used to train models.
- Use the least-privileged account and application scope when enabling live computer use.
- Require a human confirmation before purchases, sending messages, deleting data, or other consequential actions.
- Log requested and executed actions so you can review what happened.
Anthropic warns that screenshots, webpages, and application interfaces can contain adversarial instructions or deceptive elements. OpenAI’s Computer Use documentation likewise advises treating screen content and opened files as context that may be processed, scoping tasks, and reviewing permission prompts. A manually attached image and live screen access do not have identical permissions or exposure.

How computer-use screenshot loops work
- Your application provides the agent with a computer tool and a user goal.
- The agent requests an action such as
screenshot,click, ortype. - Your integration executes that action in the approved environment.
- For a screenshot action, the integration returns the captured image (and any action result).
- The agent reasons over the returned state and requests the next action until the task is complete or a human stops it.
This loop is suitable for an isolated browser or virtual desktop. It is not a way to grant an agent unrestricted access to your personal screen. Keep credentials out of the environment where possible and gate sensitive actions.

The upload control is missing
Check that you are using a product and account mode with image input enabled, then refresh or update the client. If a work-space policy blocks attachments, an administrator must change that policy; do not bypass it by uploading through an unapproved service.
The agent says text is unreadable
Capture again at a higher scale, crop to the text and its nearby label, and remove compression artifacts. For tiny code or logs, paste the text separately and use the image for layout context.
The agent invents what is outside the image
State the crop boundary explicitly: “Use only visible pixels; list missing information as unknown.” Ask for a confidence note or an uncertainty list when exact reading matters.
Two screenshots are compared incorrectly
Label files clearly, state which is before and after, and request a region-by-region comparison. Keep viewport size and zoom consistent; otherwise a layout shift may be caused by capture settings rather than your application.

A computer-use agent clicks the wrong control
Stop the loop, return a fresh screenshot, and describe the target by label and surrounding context. Reduce the tool’s window or application scope, and require confirmation before any irreversible action. Never rely on an old coordinate after the page has scrolled or resized.
A PDF screenshot is not visually analyzed
Upload the page as PNG or JPEG. Claude’s documented PDF behavior processes pages 101–1000 as text only, so a screenshot embedded on one of those pages may not receive visual analysis.

FAQ
Can I paste a screenshot instead of saving a file?
Yes. ChatGPT and Claude both document clipboard paste, as well as drag-and-drop and file selection.
Should I send one large screenshot or several crops?
Send the smallest set that preserves context. Use a full view for navigation or layout and focused crops for tiny text; label each image and explain how they relate.

Is uploading an image the same as giving an agent control of my computer?
No. An upload is a static input. Computer use is an application-managed loop in which the agent requests actions and receives new screenshots.
What should I do when the agent is unsure?
Ask it to separate visible facts from inferences, quote uncertain text with markers, and list what additional crop or context would resolve the uncertainty.
