The fairest way to share a TV and console is to agree on predictable turns before the next disagreement: talk through what each person needs, try a short written schedule, set a clear handoff point, and review how it works. There is no evidence-backed universal split of hours for adult partners; the right arrangement depends on your routines and what each of you considers fair.
Agree on what “fair” means to both of you
Talk when neither of you is waiting to use the screen. Each person should name the ways they want to use the TV and console, plus any genuinely fixed commitments, such as a live event or a scheduled online match. Then compare what fairness means to each of you: equal time, predictable access, priority for fixed events, or a balance of solo use and time together.
These are practical steps adapted from family media guidance, not a schedule tested with adult couples. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends making a media plan for every household member and revisiting it as circumstances change. Its family plan guidance is intended for families, so apply it to a partnership as a useful planning approach rather than a proven relationship intervention.
Choose a simple schedule to try
Write down a few predictable blocks or alternating turns. Include time each person can use the screen independently, and reserve shared viewing or gaming time if you both want it. Keep the first version short-term and adjustable; a plan that works on ordinary evenings may not suit weekends or a change in work hours.

There is no established “correct” number of hours to divide between partners. Treat any rotation as an example to negotiate, not a rule. For instance, you might alternate who chooses the evening’s program or game, while reserving a mutually agreed block for a fixed-time event. The useful test is whether both people can anticipate their access and whether exceptions are handled consistently.
Set handoffs that work for games and TV
Agree on a turn length and stopping point before a session begins. A game may not end cleanly at the exact minute, so decide whether the player can finish the current round or reach the next save point. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner recommends setting a timer and agreeing to finish at the end of a round or at the next save point in its family gaming guidance. For TV, an episode or program boundary can be a similarly clear handoff.

A phone or console timer may be enough; a separate visual timer is optional. The important part is that both people agree to the signal and stopping point in advance.
Make exceptions predictable
Decide how much notice is reasonable for a fixed-time request, and how the other person will get a comparable opportunity later. A live event or scheduled match can be treated differently from a general preference, but avoid turning every “I’d rather use it now” into an emergency. A simple agreement—such as requesting a switch in advance and offering the next suitable slot in return—can prevent exceptions from quietly becoming the default.

Review the trial and revise it
After trying the arrangement, check whether each person had predictable access and whether the schedule disrupted sleep, work, other responsibilities, or time together. Change the blocks, handoff rules, or exception process where needed. Family media-plan and gaming guidance supports revisiting plans and setting expectations; applying that advice to adult partners is a practical adaptation, not an evaluated intervention.

Separate profiles and passcodes can help protect accounts and purchases on a shared device. The US Federal Trade Commission discusses these kinds of protections in guidance for families with children, including online safety advice; they do not decide who gets the living-room screen at a given time.

Likewise, PlayStation’s PS5 Console Sharing setting is for digital access, not household scheduling. Sony says it can be enabled on one PS5 at a time and lets other users on that console access purchased games and media and some PlayStation Plus benefits, subject to platform conditions. See Sony’s PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play instructions for the feature’s details. A setting can solve an account-access issue; only an agreement can allocate shared-screen time.
