Share a Figma file with a link
- Open the Figma file you want to share.
- Select Share in the top-right corner.
- In the sharing dialog, choose the audience:
- Anyone for the broadest link access.
- Eligible organization or workspace members for team distribution.
- Only invited people for restricted access.
- Set What they can do to Can view or Can edit.
- Select Copy link, then paste the link into your email, chat, ticket or documentation.
If you select a frame or another node before opening the Share dialog, the copied link can open at that location. This is useful when reviewers need to start on a particular screen rather than at the file’s default view.
Invite specific people instead
- Open the file’s Share dialog.
- Enter each person’s email address in the invite field.
- Choose Can view or Can edit for the invite.
- Send the invitation.
Figma supports both link sharing and direct invitations. Direct invitations are usually the clearer choice for confidential client work because the audience is named rather than defined by possession of a link.
Choose the right audience and permission

Permission and product access are separate. A person may have an edit role in the sharing dialog but still lack the seat or product access required to use the file fully.

How to let someone edit your Figma file
In the file’s Share dialog, set the audience to the appropriate group or invite the person’s email address, then change What they can do to Can edit. Copy the link or send the invitation after changing the role.
Before using an open “Anyone” edit link, consider how widely the URL may circulate. For a client handoff or internal work, Only invited people with Can edit gives you a narrower audience while preserving editing capability.
How to share a Figma file for comments and review
Choose Can view. Viewers can explore the design, inspect it, view prototypes and leave comments without changing layers or objects. This is the normal setting for design reviews, approvals and developer handoffs.
Send the copied link with a short instruction such as which page, frame or flow to review. If you selected a frame before copying, the link can open there and reduce navigation for the recipient.

Security controls for sensitive files
Paid Figma plans may provide additional sharing controls, including password protection and organization search-visibility settings. Enterprise plans can add link expiration. Availability depends on the plan and workspace configuration, so check the options shown in your own Share dialog.
By default, viewers can copy, share and export. On paid plans, editors can disable those actions under Advanced sharing settings. Use those controls when recipients should review the work but should not redistribute or export it.
- Use Only invited people when confidentiality matters.
- Use password protection or expiration when your paid plan exposes those controls and the link will be distributed outside your normal team.
- Review copy, share and export controls before sending sensitive designs.
- Prefer a named invitation over an unrestricted link when you need a known audience.
Sharing with someone who does not have a Figma account
Start with the audience choice in the Share dialog rather than assuming that an email invitation and an open link behave the same way. An Anyone link is the broadest option; an organization or workspace setting limits access to eligible members; Only invited people is the most restrictive. The recipient’s ability to open, comment or edit is determined by the audience, permission and any workspace policy applied to the file.
If access fails, send the copied file or prototype link directly and verify the selected audience and role. For an external recipient, test the link in a private browser window before distributing it widely so you can see the experience someone outside your account receives.

Why someone can view the file but not edit it
The most common cause is a Can view link or invitation. Reopen Share, check What they can do, and change the role to Can edit if changes are intended.
If the role already says Can edit, check the person’s seat and product access. Figma separates sharing permissions from seats, so an edit role alone may not grant access to a product that the person’s seat does not include.
Troubleshooting common sharing problems
The recipient cannot open the link
- Reopen Share and confirm the audience is not limited to a workspace or to invited people unintentionally.
- If the file is invitation-only, verify that the recipient’s email address was added.
- Copy the link again and send the newly copied URL.
The invitation email was missed
Send the copied file or prototype link directly. The recipient can still open it when the file’s audience and permission allow access; the invitation email itself is not the only delivery method.
The link opens the wrong screen
Return to the file, select the intended frame or node, open Share and copy the link again. A selection can determine the location opened by the link.

The recipient can comment but cannot make changes
Commenting is consistent with Can view. Change the link or invitation to Can edit, then confirm that the recipient also has the required seat and product access.
You cannot find advanced restrictions
Password protection, search-visibility controls, link expiration and restrictions on copying or exporting depend on paid-plan or Enterprise availability. If an option is absent, the current plan or workspace policy may not provide it.
A practical sharing checklist
- Open the correct file, not a duplicate or an older version.
- Decide whether the audience is anyone, your organization or workspace, or named invitees.
- Choose Can view for review or Can edit for collaboration.
- Select the starting frame before copying if reviewers should land on a specific screen.
- Check paid-plan restrictions when copy, export, search visibility, passwords or expiration matter.
- Test the link in a private window when distributing it outside your team.
- Keep a record of who received edit access to confidential work.

Should I send a link or a direct invitation for a client review?
Use a direct invitation when the file is confidential or the recipient list must stay explicit. Use a link when distribution is broad and the selected audience allows the intended recipients to open it.
Can I limit a reviewer without removing the file from my team?
Yes. Give the reviewer a view role while keeping the file available to your organization or workspace; edit access remains separate from the file’s broader audience setting.
What should I verify before sharing an unreleased design?
Check the audience, role and any available paid-plan controls for passwords, expiration, search visibility, copying, sharing and exporting. Then test the link from a context that is not already signed in to your Figma account.
