ElevenLabs shapes emotion and prosody through a combination of script context, voice characteristics, generation settings, and—on supported models—audio tags. There is no single emotion dial that guarantees a particular performance: write the intended delivery into the text, tune settings for variation and pacing, then listen to the generated speech and revise.

How does ElevenLabs create emotional delivery?

ElevenLabs says its text-to-speech models interpret emotional context from the input text. Word choice, punctuation, surrounding sentences, and explicit performance cues can all influence how a line sounds. Giving a passage enough context can help the model carry a more coherent emotional pattern than it might infer from an isolated sentence. ElevenLabs’ Text to Speech documentation describes this as model interpretation, not a guarantee of a specific result.

Start with the performance you want in the script itself. A line written as a genuine question, a pause indicated by punctuation, or dialogue framed by a clear emotional situation may guide delivery more naturally than a setting change alone. Explicit directions can help, but descriptive text may be read aloud as part of the output. If a cue is not meant to be spoken, remove it from the final audio in editing or rewrite the script so the context is conveyed without an audible stage direction.

What controls affect emotion, consistency, and rate?

Settings shape delivery but do not replace the script or the choice of voice. The API documentation lists these defaults and ranges; the web app maps to the corresponding voice settings. These are product specifications, not measured emotion-accuracy results. Edit voice settings and Get default voice settings describe them.

Control Documented value or behavior How to use it
Stability Range 0–1; default 0.5. Lower values can allow more emotional variation; higher values can sound more consistent or monotonous. Adjust after choosing a suitable voice and refining the text. Compare outputs for the balance of variation and consistency you need.
Style Default 0. It attempts to amplify the source voice’s style; a nonzero value may add computational cost or latency. Treat it as amplification of the voice’s existing style, not a precise control for a named emotion.
Similarity boost Range 0–1; default 0.75. It aims to keep the generated voice closer to the original speaker. Consider whether likeness or expressive deviation matters more for the result. The documentation does not prescribe a universally best value.
Speed Default 1.0. ElevenLabs’ best-practices guide describes a 0.7–1.2 range for the workflows it covers. Use it for a broad rate adjustment; punctuation and text structure can also influence pacing.

For model and workflow details, consult ElevenLabs’ best-practices guide. Settings are not interchangeable: stability affects variation, style attempts to emphasize a voice’s existing style, similarity boost targets speaker resemblance, and speed adjusts rate.

Do ElevenLabs audio tags control emotion?

For the documented v3 and v4 prompting workflows, bracketed audio tags can guide vocal delivery or emotion. Examples include [whispers], [laughs], and [curious]. Use a concise tag at the point where the performance should change, and describe the vocal quality clearly. A tag may be interpreted as a request for a sound rather than a delivery cue, and ElevenLabs says tag reliability is still being improved. Test tags with the specific voice and passage rather than assuming they will behave identically across generations.

Pause controls are also model-specific. The guide says Eleven v3 and v4 do not support SSML break tags; for those models, use punctuation, ellipses, text structure, and supported audio tags to shape pauses and pacing. Other workflows may support <break> tags, but excessive use can cause instability or artifacts. Check the instructions for the model and interface you are using before adding markup.

How to make a more expressive ElevenLabs voice

  1. Choose a voice suited to the performance. The voice’s existing character matters: ElevenLabs’ help article cautions that a monotone cloned source can limit expressive output. How to produce emotions?
  2. Write the line in context. Include enough surrounding text for the intended emotional situation to be clear. Use natural wording, punctuation, and text structure to suggest emphasis and pacing.
  3. Add supported delivery cues where needed. In v3/v4 workflows, try concise bracketed tags at the point of change. Listen for tags or descriptive directions being spoken, and revise the script or edit the audio if that is not intended.
  4. Tune settings in small steps. Use stability for the variation-versus-consistency trade-off, style to amplify the source voice’s style, and speed for rate. Do not treat any combination as a guaranteed emotional preset.
  5. Generate and listen. If the emotion misses, try revised wording, a different cue, or another voice. Evaluate the actual output; documentation does not establish one setting combination that works best for every voice.
  6. Match voice design to the preview. In Voice Design, make the preview text support the same character and emotional intent as the voice description. The preview is a performance script, so conflicting instructions and sample dialogue can produce an unnatural or inconsistent result. See Voice Design documentation.

How does Expressive mode differ for live agents?

Expressive mode is a separate, conversational workflow rather than a control for ordinary static text-to-speech. ElevenLabs’ documentation says Expressive mode is enabled by default when selecting Eleven v3 Conversational in ElevenAgents. It describes context-aware delivery across turns and turn-taking that uses signals such as emotional cues and speech patterns to time when the agent responds. See Expressive mode documentation and Voice customization. Evaluate this agent behavior within the conversational setup; it is not the same process as directing a single generated passage.

What to expect from the results

ElevenLabs documents intended behavior and recommendations, not a measured success rate for emotional accuracy. Its help article says its tips do not guarantee a particular outcome, and the best-practices guide cautions that tags are not perfectly reliable. Results can vary with the voice, model, wording, and settings. Treat generation as an iterative performance workflow: choose a fitting voice, make the script’s intent clear, use only supported controls, and judge the audio you actually receive.
