For a 24/7 music radio stream where listeners mainly tune in rather than talk with a host in real time, choose Normal latency in YouTube Studio. YouTube says Normal is intended for non-interactive streams and gives viewers the lowest buffering risk. Low and ultra-low latency suit interactive broadcasts, but make buffering more likely; neither supports 4K.
Set latency in YouTube Studio
The selectable latency option applies to encoder-based streams. YouTube says webcam and mobile streams are set up for interactivity and do not offer a user-selected latency setting. For a stream that exposes the setting:
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Enter the live stream details.
- In the right-side menu, choose Stream or Manage, then open Stream Settings.
- Under Stream latency, select Normal latency.
YouTube’s guidance is: “Choose ‘Normal latency’ if you don’t plan to interact with your audience in the live stream.” See Manage live stream settings and Understand live streaming latency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| Setting | Best suited to | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Non-interactive broadcasts, including music radio | YouTube describes it as the highest-quality viewer setting, with the lowest viewer buffering. It supports all resolutions and live features. |
| Low | Limited interaction when an immediate response is unnecessary | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under 10 seconds. It can increase buffering compared with Normal and does not support 4K. |
| Ultra-low | Highly interactive streams and real-time conversation | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under five seconds. It makes buffering more likely and does not support 4K. |
The under-10-second and under-five-second figures are YouTube’s general descriptions for most viewers, not guarantees for every device, network, or channel. Lower latency leaves the player less time to build a read-ahead buffer, so network or encoder interruptions have less room to be absorbed.

Why Normal latency fits a continuous music stream
A music radio channel is usually a listening experience, not a conversation requiring near-instant replies. Normal latency prioritizes a steadier playback buffer over minimizing the delay between the encoder and a viewer. Unless real-time audience interaction is a central part of the broadcast, the shorter delay of Low or Ultra-low offers little practical benefit to listeners.
If you plan to stream in 4K
Normal latency is also the compatible choice for 4K. YouTube’s latency guidance says Low and Ultra-low do not support 4K, and its encoder settings guidance says low-latency improvement is unavailable for 4K/2160p streams, which use Normal latency. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the values appropriate to your chosen resolution and frame rate.
Check the encoder and connection before going live
Latency is only one part of reliable playback. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 support options; consult the current official settings page for resolution-specific requirements rather than applying a bitrate from a different setup. Test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, even if the final radio visuals are mostly static.

- Run an encoder test before starting the public broadcast and monitor stream health.
- Use a reliable upload connection and allow headroom: YouTube recommends capacity 20% above the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams. Include the backup stream in the total if both are sending video.
- Confirm that the stream is reachable from the channel and watch pages, including on mobile devices.
- If recording locally, verify that the archive file is being written and growing.
- If you have configured a backup encoder, test its failover rather than assuming it will take over correctly.

Plan separately for a 24/7 archive
A continuous 24-hour broadcast exceeds YouTube’s stated 12-hour automatic-archive threshold. YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream if it is less than 12 hours long and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on one uninterrupted 24/7 stream to create a complete YouTube archive. If preserving a recording matters, keep a local recording or plan an archive workflow separately. YouTube does not establish a preferred restart interval or guarantee how it will treat a particular long-running broadcast; see Archive live streams.
Common latency and continuity problems
Viewers report buffering
Check stream health, encoder output, and upload stability first. Low and Ultra-low latency increase buffering risk because there is less read-ahead time; for a passive music stream, switch to Normal latency if the stream does not depend on immediate interaction.

The latency option is missing
Confirm whether the broadcast is being set up as an encoder stream. YouTube says webcam and mobile streams are always set up for interactivity and do not expose a selectable latency setting.
A 4K stream cannot use Low or Ultra-low
This is an expected limitation in YouTube’s guidance. Use Normal latency for 4K/2160p.
The live stream has no complete automatic archive
For a stream longer than 12 hours, YouTube warns that it may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording if you need an archive rather than assuming the continuous broadcast will be saved.
