Set an Upwork hourly rate by calculating what you need to earn after fees, dividing by realistic billable hours, and checking comparable freelancers who offer similar work. Use that figure as your profile starting rate, then set each proposal rate according to the project and confirm the contract-specific fee before accepting.
Calculate a sustainable hourly rate
Start with the income you need to earn, not the lowest rate you see on another profile. Count the hours you can realistically bill clients; time spent finding work, handling administration, learning, or marketing is usually not billable.
- Estimate annual income needs. Include your personal income target and the business costs you must cover.
- Estimate annual billable hours. Base this on the time you expect to spend on client work, after allowing for time off and non-billable tasks.
- Divide the annual amount by billable hours. The result is a starting net hourly target, before accounting for Upwork’s fee.
Upwork’s rate guide uses 60% billable time and 40% non-billable time as a planning example. It illustrates the calculation with 30 work hours per week across 52 weeks, five weeks off, and an allowance for non-billable time. Treat those figures as an example, not a universal freelancer average. See Upwork’s rate-setting guide.
Include costs such as taxes, insurance, licenses, equipment, office space, software, marketing, and advertising. Your personal cost of living also affects the income you need. A rate that ignores these costs can look competitive but still leave you short of your target.

Account for the contract fee
Upwork’s freelancer service fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract. The exact percentage is shown when you submit a proposal or receive an offer, and it is fixed once the contract begins. Check the fee for the specific opportunity rather than assuming one percentage applies to every contract. Review Upwork’s freelancer service-fee details.
To estimate the gross rate needed for a chosen net hourly target, use:
Gross hourly rate = target net hourly rate ÷ (1 − fee rate)

For example, Upwork’s published calculation says a $20 USD net target at a 10% fee corresponds to $22.22 USD gross per hour. Because the gross amount is rounded, Upwork’s example yields $239.98 net for 12 billed hours. Its example for a $25 USD net target at the same fee gives a $27.78 USD gross rate and $300.02 net over 12 hours. These are Upwork’s examples, not guarantees of take-home pay; actual results depend on your contract’s fee and billed hours.
Use Upwork’s fee calculator and the estimated amount displayed as you enter a rate, then confirm the terms in the proposal or offer before committing.
Compare rates for equivalent work
Search Upwork for freelancers with a similar skill set, experience level, and location. Compare people offering comparable services and scope rather than treating the cheapest visible profile as a target. If contract work history is visible, check it too: a freelancer’s advertised profile rate may differ from the amount shown on past work, and neither figure guarantees what they currently earn.

Set your profile rate
Your profile rate is a starting point visible to potential clients. To change it, open your profile, hover over the hourly rate, select its edit icon, enter the rate, and save. Upwork displays the applicable freelancer fee and an estimated amount you will receive as you enter the rate. See Upwork’s profile-editing instructions.
Changing the profile rate does not update open proposals or active contracts. It is not a promise to charge that exact amount for every job.

Price each proposal for its scope
You can set hourly terms in a proposal. Consider the work’s complexity and effort, deadline or urgency, likely duration, and whether the project offers steady long-term work. Compare the proposed rate with your sustainable minimum, not just the client’s description of a task as “easy.” A low rate that fails to cover your time and costs is not made sustainable by a client’s estimate of the effort.
Upwork’s platform minimum for an hourly contract is $3 USD per hour. That is a floor imposed by the platform, not a recommended rate; bonuses cannot be used to replace the hourly minimum. Check Upwork’s minimum-rate rules.

New hourly contracts
For a new hourly contract with a non-Enterprise client, you may propose a scheduled rate increase. The client can accept, decline, or counter with a different amount or schedule. If accepted, the schedule continues for that contract and cannot be added later.
Active contracts
A client may raise an hourly rate subject to Upwork’s conditions; only the freelancer can lower it. An approved change applies to future hours, not hours already worked. Upwork also describes a limited test of a client option to adjust some eligible rates so the freelancer receives an intended net amount; availability is conditional. Check your contract controls and terms to see what applies. Read Upwork’s hourly-rate change rules.
