Firefox does not have a built-in setting for a daily minutes-per-site limit. For personal focus, install a Firefox extension such as Block Site or LeechBlock NG. For a child’s device, use Windows Family Safety or macOS Screen Time; Firefox respects those operating-system parental controls. On managed computers, an administrator can use Firefox’s WebsiteFilter policy to block URL patterns, but it is not a documented time-quota feature.
Choose the kind of limit you need
The right method depends on whether you want to interrupt your own browsing, enforce a child’s device rules, or centrally block sites on a managed Firefox installation. These approaches are not interchangeable: an extension can schedule blocks within Firefox, operating-system controls apply more broadly, and enterprise policy blocks matching URLs without counting minutes spent on them.

Set up an extension for your Firefox profile
Install a suitable extension
- Open Firefox’s application menu and choose Add-ons and themes.
- Choose Extensions, then search Mozilla Add-ons for Block Site or LeechBlock NG. Mozilla’s family-and-student guidance names both for restricting or focusing website use.
- Review the listing and permissions, then choose the option to add the extension to Firefox and confirm the browser prompt.
- Open the extension’s settings from the Extensions menu or its toolbar button. The precise settings layout can change as an extension is updated.
Add the sites and schedule
Enter the domain or hostname you want to restrict, such as the domain for a social network, and choose a schedule in the extension’s own settings. Block Site’s Mozilla Add-ons listing documents per-hostname time- and date-based blocking, wildcard and regular-expression matching, and a master password. Those capabilities are extension features, not Firefox settings; check the current listing and options in your installed version before relying on a particular matching pattern.
LeechBlock NG is another option Mozilla recommends for blocking distracting sites. If what you specifically need is a temporary one-off block rather than a recurring schedule, the Website Blocker: MT listing documents 15-, 30-, and 60-minute blocks as well as custom whole-minute deadlines. Because extension listings and availability can change, confirm that the extension is available and that its current controls fit your use case before configuring it.

Test before relying on the rule
- Save the rule and confirm the schedule or deadline uses the intended time and days.
- Try the rule with a site you control, or test during a short, non-disruptive window. Check both the exact hostname and any related subdomains you expect the rule to cover.
- Set a master password if the extension offers one, and keep it private if the goal is to make changing the rule less convenient.
- Verify that the site is actually blocked at the intended time. Do not assume a rule covers other browsers, private windows, other device profiles, or every related domain unless you have checked.
Use parental controls for a child’s device
For child safety, an extension alone is weak enforcement: a knowledgeable user can disable it, and it does not work in other browsers. Mozilla directs Windows users to Microsoft Family Safety and Mac users to Family Sharing and Screen Time. Configure the child’s account and restrictions in the operating system rather than relying only on a Firefox add-on.
Firefox checks the computer’s parental-control state and enables Prefer:Safe mode while those controls are active. Mozilla explains that the feature can be turned off only through the password-protected parental settings in the operating system. The practical distinction is important: these are broader device or account controls that Firefox respects, not a Firefox setting that allocates a specific number of minutes to an individual website. Set and protect the operating-system account controls, then check the child’s Firefox experience under that account.
Block sites on managed Firefox installations
Administrators can deploy Firefox’s WebsiteFilter policy to block websites from being visited. The policy accepts URL match patterns and exception patterns, with up to 1,000 entries in each block or exception array. Use it when the requirement is centralized URL blocking on managed computers, not when the requirement is to measure a person’s time on a site and stop access after a daily allowance.

Pattern and exception behavior should be validated against the administrator documentation and the organization’s actual URLs before broad deployment. A blocklist entry is a rule about which URLs Firefox may visit; it is not evidence of a time quota, activity report, or cross-browser control.
Why Firefox cannot enforce a native daily website quota
Firefox’s documented user controls do not include a built-in per-website timer such as “allow YouTube for 30 minutes per day, then block it.” Firefox settings for privacy, permissions, and site behavior are not a substitute for a minutes-used counter. To create a site-specific schedule within one Firefox profile, use an extension; for child restrictions across the device, use operating-system controls; for organization-wide blocking, use policy management.
That distinction also affects what a rule can promise. A scheduled extension can block a site according to its configured times, but it is not the same as tracking actual daily use and subtracting minutes. The cited WebsiteFilter policy provides URL blocking and exceptions, not a time allowance. If your essential requirement is a strict quota across browsers or applications, verify that the chosen operating-system or management product explicitly supports that quota for the accounts and devices you use.

Troubleshoot a website limit that does not work
The site still opens during a scheduled block
- Check the hostname: The rule may cover one host but not a related subdomain. Review the extension’s matching syntax and test the exact address you opened.
- Check the schedule: Confirm the selected days, start and end times, and the time zone or clock used by the device. Reopen the extension settings after saving to make sure the rule persisted.
- Check the extension state: Make sure it remains enabled in Firefox’s Extensions manager and that no conflicting rule or exception overrides the block.
- Retest in the intended profile: Firefox extensions and settings are profile-specific. A different Firefox profile may not have the extension or rule.
The block works in Firefox but not elsewhere
That is expected for an extension: it does not govern another browser. For a child’s device, configure the operating-system parental controls Mozilla identifies. For an organization-managed Firefox installation, have an administrator deploy WebsiteFilter if URL blocking is the goal.
A child can turn off the extension
Do not treat an extension password as equivalent to a protected child account. Mozilla warns that extensions can be disabled by a knowledgeable user. Use password-protected Windows or macOS parental settings for stronger device-level enforcement, and ensure the child does not control the account that can change those settings.

A policy blocks more or less than intended
Review the URL patterns and exception patterns, then test them with representative addresses before applying changes broadly. WebsiteFilter is a pattern-based blocking policy; it does not provide a time counter that could explain a block based on elapsed browsing.

Performance, reliability, and choosing a rule
A browser extension is the quickest route for an individual who wants a reminder or schedule in Firefox, but it depends on the extension being installed, enabled, and configured in the profile being used. It is consequently best viewed as a personal focus aid rather than tamper-resistant parental enforcement. A master password can add friction, but it does not make the control apply outside Firefox.
Operating-system parental controls are the more suitable route when restrictions should follow a child’s account beyond Firefox. The trade-off is scope: the controls are managed at the device or account level, and Firefox’s documented behavior is to respect the operating-system parental-control state and enable Prefer:Safe mode. WebsiteFilter serves managed Firefox deployments that need URL restrictions and exceptions, with documented limits of 1,000 patterns in each array; it is not the solution for daily minutes-per-site quotas.
