For one video, enable VLC’s repeat-current mode; for several videos, use repeat-all so VLC cycles the playlist. That controls local playback only: it does not, by itself, send the video to YouTube Live. You still need a compatible encoder feed configured for your channel’s current ingest settings, and VLC’s official successive-file streaming example is for an HTTP receiver—not proof of a working YouTube connection.

Choose the right VLC repeat mode

Decide whether you want to repeat one selected video or play a list of videos in sequence. VLC treats these as different playlist modes.

What you want VLC behavior
Keep playing the selected video Repeat-current: repeats the selected item.
Play several videos in order, then start the list again Repeat-all: cycles the playlist.

VideoLAN’s playlist API documents the distinction between repeat-current and repeat-all, but it is a technical reference rather than a version-specific walkthrough of VLC’s menus: VLC playlist API. Menu labels and placement can vary between VLC versions and platforms, so use the repeat control in your playlist view and verify which mode is active before relying on it.

Set up playback for one video or a playlist

Repeat one video

  1. Open the video in VLC.
  2. Set the playlist repeat control to repeat the current item, not the entire playlist.
  3. Play the video and watch what happens at the end. Confirm that it starts again.

Cycle several videos

  1. Add the files to VLC’s playlist in the order you want them to play.
  2. Set the repeat control to repeat-all.
  3. Start playback and confirm that VLC advances to the next file and returns to the first after the final file ends.

These checks establish that VLC is repeating or cycling the local media. They do not establish that YouTube is receiving the playback.

Why VLC’s repeat button does not make a YouTube Live broadcast

The repeat controls manage the source sequence in VLC. A YouTube Live broadcast also needs a separate, compatible encoder feed connected to the ingest settings for your channel. Setting repeat in VLC alone does not start that broadcast or configure the connection.

YouTube’s HLS setup instructions say to configure HLS through Live Control Room and specify requirements for that protocol. The page states that HLS uses 1–4 second segments and has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments: YouTube Help: Set up and use HLS live streaming. Those are HLS-specific details; do not apply them to RTMP or assume they describe every ingest option.

What VLC’s documented broadcast example does—and does not—show

VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 desktop documentation demonstrates broadcasting successive media files by specifying multiple input commands for one channel. Its example uses sout-keep so the streaming output stays open when one song ends, and sends the stream over HTTP to a receiving device on a local network: VideoLAN VLC 3.0 streaming documentation.

That example is useful as a continuity reference: the output needs to remain open while the source advances. It is not a YouTube ingest recipe. The referenced documentation does not establish a complete, current direct VLC desktop-to-YouTube setup, so do not copy an unverified output chain or treat sout-keep as proof that YouTube will accept the feed.

VideoLAN’s VLM reference describes a broadcast with successive inputs: play launches the first input and then the next, like a playlist, while the broadcast’s loop option restarts the input list after its final input finishes: VideoLAN VLM reference. This explains how VLM handles its input list; it does not settle the separate YouTube connection or guarantee gap-free delivery to viewers.

Test for gaps and diagnose failures

  • The same file does not restart: check that repeat-current, rather than repeat-all or no repeat, is selected. Verify by watching a complete playback cycle.
  • The next file does not play: confirm that the files are in the playlist in the intended order and that repeat-all is active if you expect the list to restart after its final item.
  • VLC plays continuously, but YouTube is not live: playback looping and platform delivery are separate. Check the channel’s current Live Control Room ingest settings and the compatible encoder’s connection; the repeat setting does not create that connection.
  • The output stops at a file boundary: VideoLAN’s documented VLC 3.0 broadcast example uses sout-keep to keep output open across successive inputs. Its example targets an HTTP receiver, so it does not establish that the setting solves a YouTube connection.
  • An HLS configuration does not behave like another protocol: use the requirements for the protocol actually selected. YouTube’s 1–4 second segment guidance and stated latency tradeoff apply to HLS, not universally to RTMP or other ingest modes.
  • You need uninterrupted playback for an event: test the whole path—media sequence, encoder output, and YouTube reception—beforehand. A successful VLC-only test cannot verify the other stages.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel playing uploaded videos continuously, StreamNeo is an alternative to running a local VLC setup: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; the video streams as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video playback to YouTube, not camera streaming.
