Set up Windows Hello first, then create a passkey with a website or app that supports it. On an HP OmniBook Ultra, facial recognition requires an infrared (IR) camera, and fingerprint recognition requires a fingerprint reader; the sensors included vary by model and configuration. A Windows Hello PIN can be used even when a biometric option is unavailable.
Check your OmniBook model and Windows version
Before looking for a face or fingerprint setting, identify the laptop’s full product number. You can find it on the device label, in HP Support Assistant, or in Windows system information. Then check your Windows version under Settings > System > About.
The OmniBook Ultra name covers different model families and regional configurations. For example, HP Japan’s specifications list an IR camera and face recognition for the 14-kg family; its cited 14-fd family specification lists an IR camera, face recognition, and a fingerprint sensor. Those are region-specific family specifications, not a guarantee about every unit. Check the full product number against HP’s specifications: HP OmniBook Ultra 14-kg specifications and HP OmniBook Ultra 14-fd specifications.
HP’s general Windows Hello guidance says face recognition needs an IR camera and fingerprint recognition needs a fingerprint reader. If a biometric option is absent, first verify that the exact configuration includes the required sensor rather than assuming Windows has a fault. See HP’s Windows Hello setup and hardware guidance.

Set up Windows Hello on the OmniBook
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. You can also search Windows for “Sign-in options.” Menu wording can vary with Windows updates.
- If Windows asks you to create a PIN, choose PIN (Windows Hello) and follow the prompts. The PIN is a Windows Hello sign-in method and can also serve as a backup when fingerprint recognition is unavailable.
- If Facial recognition (Windows Hello) appears, select it, choose Set up, and follow Windows Security’s instructions. Look toward the camera when prompted.
- If Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello) appears, select it, choose Set up, and lift and reposition the same finger as Windows prompts you. This lets the reader capture the fingerprint from different angles.
Only enroll face or fingerprint if the corresponding option is available on your PC. HP describes Windows Hello as signing in with a look or a touch; the methods shown depend on the device’s supported hardware.
Create a passkey for a supported website or app
Windows Hello setup and passkey setup are separate. Hello gives Windows a way to verify you on the device; a passkey is created for an account, website, or app that supports passkeys.

- Open the service’s account security settings, or follow its prompt during sign-in, and choose the option to create or save a passkey.
- When the service or Windows presents storage choices, select Windows device or Windows Hello to save the passkey on this OmniBook.
- Complete the Windows Security prompt using the enrolled face, fingerprint, or PIN.
The passkey option will not appear for every service. A website or app must support passkeys, and a work or school administrator may restrict the methods available to an organization account. Microsoft’s instructions for creating and saving a passkey describe the available flow and storage choices.

A passkey saved with Windows Hello on this OmniBook is local to this Windows device; it does not automatically sync to your other devices. If you need to use passkeys across devices, select a synced credential manager when the service and Windows prompt offer one. A phone or physical security key may also be available as a storage destination. The choices depend on the service, account, Windows version, and—for work or school accounts—organization policy. Check the options shown during setup rather than assuming a particular provider or destination is supported. Microsoft explains the Windows passkey model in its Windows passkey documentation.

A physical security key is optional, not required for built-in Hello enrollment or for a local Hello passkey. If you choose one, confirm that it has a connector compatible with your computer and that the service supports security-key passkeys.
Troubleshoot a missing option
- Face recognition is missing: Confirm that the exact model has an IR camera. Check that the camera privacy switch is open and that Windows detects the camera. A standard webcam alone does not establish that the PC has the IR hardware required for Windows Hello face recognition.
- Fingerprint recognition is missing: Verify that your configuration includes a fingerprint reader. On some models, a reader may be integrated into the power button; do not assume that feature is present without checking the product specifications.
- The passkey choice is missing: Check whether the specific website, app, or account supports passkeys. Make sure Windows is up to date, and check whether a work or school administrator limits sign-in choices.
- The passkey does not appear on another device: Check whether you saved it locally with Windows Hello rather than in a synced credential manager.
If the expected sensor is listed for your exact product but Windows still does not offer it, the available information here does not identify a cause for that individual PC. Avoid concluding that the sensor is defective based on a missing setting alone.

What a passkey does when you sign in
Microsoft explains that a passkey uses a private key held by the device and a public key registered with the service. After you unlock the private key with an approved method such as Hello, the device uses it to respond to the service’s sign-in challenge. Microsoft describes passkeys as resistant to phishing; this is the vendor’s security explanation, not a guarantee about every account or implementation.
