To use Alexa hands-free, set up an Amazon Echo speaker in the Alexa app, then say its wake word followed by a request. You do not need a separate “Smart Speaker Mode”: that phrase is not established as the name of an Alexa setting in Amazon’s guidance. This guide covers basic voice use, optional smart-home setup, microphone muting, and privacy controls.
Set up Alexa on your Echo speaker
A screen-free Echo speaker, such as an Echo Dot, is set up through the Alexa app. Plug it in, open the app, and follow the setup prompts. An Echo device with a screen can show setup instructions on the device itself. Amazon’s Echo setup guide explains the device setup options.
- Sign in to the Alexa app with your Amazon account.
- Open Devices, tap the plus icon, and choose Add Device.
- Select the device type and follow the prompts to connect the Echo to Wi-Fi.
App wording and menus can change. If your Echo does not appear, Amazon’s setup guidance says to open More and choose Add a Device. For Wi-Fi trouble, check the Echo’s status on its device page. You can also ask, “Alexa, are you connected to the internet?” as a quick network check. Amazon’s setup steps and Wi-Fi guidance provide these suggestions.

Once setup is complete, say the configured wake word and then make your request. “Alexa” is the default wake word. Amazon lists alternatives including “Amazon,” “Echo,” “Computer,” and “Ziggy”; which choices appear can depend on the device and its software. Amazon’s Alexa FAQ describes voice requests and wake words.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
- “Alexa, what’s the weather today?”
- “Alexa, add batteries to my shopping list.”
- “Alexa, play jazz.”
These are sample requests, not a guarantee that every response or music service is available in every region or Amazon account.
Connect a smart-home device (optional)
You can use Alexa for questions, lists, alarms, and music without adding smart-home accessories. To connect a bulb, plug, thermostat, or camera, first check that the product is compatible with Alexa. Amazon says products marked “Works with Alexa” are certified to work with Alexa.

If a Wi-Fi accessory will not connect, check its network requirements. Amazon notes that most smart-home Wi-Fi devices use the 2.4 GHz band; confirm the requirements for your specific product. Compatibility and safe use depend on the accessory and household. Amazon’s smart-home setup guidance covers compatibility and app setup.
Turn off the Echo microphone
Press the microphone-off button on an Echo, Echo Dot, or Echo Show to disconnect its microphones. Amazon says a red light indicates that the microphone is off. Press the button again to restore voice interaction. While the microphones are muted, the Echo will not respond to voice commands, but Amazon says you can still control it through the Alexa app. Amazon UK’s microphone instructions describe this behavior.

Review Alexa privacy controls
Amazon’s US Alexa FAQ says a voice request can be recorded and sent to Amazon’s cloud for processing after wake-word detection or button activation. Alexa Privacy controls let customers review and delete available voice recordings. Amazon UK’s privacy guidance also describes reviewing and deleting transcripts and typed requests. Exact controls and labels can vary by region, account, and app version.
For current options, open Alexa Privacy controls in the Alexa app or consult Amazon UK’s Alexa privacy guidance. The UK help page’s descriptions should not be assumed to match every region.
