Choose a VLC alternative by testing the files and devices you actually use—not by looking at file extensions alone. For local playback with configurable controls, consider mpv; for a browsable media library across devices, consider Jellyfin or Plex. In every case, a file’s container, video and audio codecs, subtitle tracks, and the specific playback client can determine whether it plays directly or needs conversion.
Choose a player based on how you watch
For local files: mpv
mpv is worth evaluating if you want a configurable local player and are comfortable with keyboard controls or editing configuration files. Its reference manual documents broad format support, command-line playback, configuration, and customizable input. That breadth is not a guarantee that every file will work on every device.
mpv does not have an official full graphical interface. The project describes its on-screen controller as not a full GUI and not intended to be one. If you expect a conventional desktop app with extensive menus and settings, that may make mpv a poor fit even if its playback capabilities suit your files. See the mpv reference manual.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a media library across devices: Jellyfin or Plex
Jellyfin and Plex are options when you want to browse a library through server-and-client software rather than simply open local files. Jellyfin lists official desktop, mobile, and TV clients, and says a subscription is not required for its server or official clients. Choose the client for the device you intend to use, then test your media in that client: compatibility varies by platform and client. Jellyfin’s client list and codec support guide describe those distinctions.

- Reliable Performance with Warranty Protection – Built for consistent, hands-free media control and backed by a 1 year Mail-In Parts/Labor Warranty for added peace of mind.
Plex documents separate playback paths: direct play and direct stream. Those paths, like Jellyfin’s, depend on the media and the client’s capabilities. See Plex’s explanation of direct play and direct stream.
If only one file fails in VLC
Before changing players, identify the file’s container, video codec, audio codec, and subtitle format, then check whether your current player and device support that combination. If you are seeing an image error covered by VideoLAN’s Windows FAQ, try the GPU-decoding experiment in the troubleshooting section below. That advice is specific to the documented Windows cases, not a universal fix.

Why a file extension cannot tell you whether it will play
An extension such as .mkv or .mp4 identifies a container, not every part of the media inside it. A file can contain a video stream, an audio stream, and one or more subtitle tracks, each with its own format. A player or device may support the container but not one of its streams or subtitles.
Jellyfin’s codec support guide treats container, video, audio, subtitles, client, and platform as separate compatibility factors. It describes three relevant playback outcomes:

- Direct play: The client plays the media without conversion.
- Direct stream or remux: The server changes the container or packages streams differently without necessarily re-encoding the video.
- Transcoding: The server converts media that the client cannot handle as provided. Unsupported video can require video transcoding; audio, container, or subtitle incompatibility can also prompt conversion or other handling. If subtitles must be burned into the picture, playback can require additional processing.
Jellyfin states that its goal is to direct-play all media, but that is a goal rather than a promise that every client can play every file directly. VideoLAN also lists support for many audio, video, and subtitle formats on its VLC features page. Neither project’s format documentation is a controlled head-to-head test proving that an alternative supports more of your files than VLC.
Set up and test an alternative in five steps
- Build a small test set. Include a file that already works and several that represent your actual problem cases. If you use them, include newer or high-efficiency video, surround audio, external subtitles, and music files. Record the device and operating system used for each test.
- Choose the playback model. Use mpv as a candidate for local playback and configurable controls. Choose Jellyfin or Plex if you want a browsable library served to clients on several devices. A server-and-client setup is different from installing a local player.
- Install through the project’s current guidance. For mpv, start with the platform-specific options on its installation page. The project warns that most Windows and macOS binary packages are third-party builds; its first-party CI builds are mainly for testing. Linux package availability and status depend on the distribution, so check both the current project page and your distribution’s package guidance. For Jellyfin, select a client from its official client list. If you plan to host a library, server installation is a separate step; use Jellyfin’s current installation instructions and quick start.
- Play every test file and inspect the result. Check picture, sound, subtitles, track selection, and seeking. With Jellyfin, note whether the item direct-plays, is remuxed/direct-streamed, or transcodes. A file that appears to play successfully may still be taking a more demanding conversion path.
- Adjust only after isolating the problem. Determine whether the failure concerns video, audio, subtitles, or the client/device combination. Change one setting at a time and keep track of it so you can undo changes. For mpv configuration and controls, consult the reference manual.
Install mpv with the right expectations
There is no single download choice that applies to every operating system. Use mpv’s installation page for the current platform options, and treat Windows and macOS packages with care: the page says most binary packages for those platforms are unofficial third-party builds. On Linux, package availability and status vary by distribution, so avoid relying on an old download link or package instruction.

After installation, open the test set and check the controls before investing time in configuration. mpv supports configuration files and customized key bindings; its manual describes the typical mpv.conf and input.conf arrangement. Its keyboard-driven, configuration-friendly approach is useful for some users, but it is not a substitute for a full official GUI.

Troubleshoot the part that is failing
Video fails or displays errors in VLC on Windows
For the Windows cases covered by VideoLAN’s FAQ, test GPU-accelerated decoding both enabled and disabled. In VLC, the documented path is Tools > Preferences > Input & Codecs; save the preference and restart VLC after changing it. The FAQ includes legacy references, so menu wording may differ in your installed version. Treat this as a targeted troubleshooting experiment, not a general remedy for codec or file problems.

Audio or subtitles are missing
Check which audio and subtitle tracks are present, whether the player or client supports their formats, and whether the desired track is selected. In a media-server client, a subtitle or audio incompatibility may lead to remuxing or transcoding rather than direct playback. Compare the behavior with the same file in a local player to help distinguish a client/server conversion issue from a problem with the file itself.
A Jellyfin item transcodes instead of direct-playing
Check the specific client and platform against Jellyfin’s codec support guide, then review the file’s container, video, audio, and subtitle tracks. An unsupported video stream can require video transcoding; an audio, container, or subtitle mismatch may trigger another conversion path. If subtitles are being burned into the picture, that can make playback more demanding. The fact that a file plays does not by itself mean it is direct-playing.
Quick Recap
Use a compatibility checklist before converting a library
- Does the player or client run on the operating system and device you use?
- Have you checked the container, video codec, audio codec, and subtitle format rather than relying on the filename extension?
- For a server-based library, do you know whether the client direct-plays, remuxes/direct-streams, or transcodes your test files?
- Do you prefer a conventional graphical interface, keyboard-driven controls, or a library interface?
- Have you tested alternate audio and subtitle tracks on representative files before converting files or switching your whole library?
