To set up visual testing with the Applitools MCP server, connect the server to an MCP-compatible coding assistant, provide the right Applitools credentials, and ask the assistant to configure Eyes and add checkpoints to a supported Playwright test. The MCP server helps with setup and review; the Applitools Eyes SDK still runs the tests.

What the Applitools MCP server does

The Applitools MCP server connects an AI assistant to Applitools Eyes workflows. Depending on its configured permissions, the assistant can help set up a project, add visual checkpoints, inspect results, resolve differences, and review baselines. The test execution itself remains the responsibility of the Eyes SDK.

There is an important scope distinction: automated project setup and checkpoint editing are documented for Playwright projects using the Applitools Playwright JavaScript/TypeScript Fixtures SDK. Inspection, resolution, and review tools can work with Eyes results produced by supported SDKs and languages, according to Applitools’ MCP documentation. Do not assume that broader results support means setup tools can configure every framework.

What you need before setup

  • Node.js 18 or newer.
  • An MCP-compatible assistant or editor, such as VS Code with Copilot, Cursor, Cline, Claude Code, or another client supported by the current Applitools instructions.
  • Access to the project source if you want the assistant to configure the project or edit tests.
  • For automated setup and checkpoint insertion, a Playwright JavaScript/TypeScript Fixtures project.
  • Applitools credentials appropriate to the actions you plan to use.

Applitools’ GitHub repository and documentation may change as the package and client integrations evolve. The configuration below uses the documented @latest package tag, which follows the latest published version rather than pinning a release.

Choose an installation route

VS Code or Cursor extension

Applitools documents an extension-based route for VS Code and Cursor that manages the server connection. Choose this when you use one of those editors and want less direct MCP configuration. Follow the current extension instructions in Applitools’ documentation, then reload or restart the client if it asks you to.

Manual stdio configuration

For a manual setup, add an MCP server entry to the configuration used by your client. A general stdio configuration is:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "applitools-mcp": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["--yes", "@applitools/mcp@latest"]
    }
  }
}

The file location and any client-specific fields vary. Use the instructions for your actual MCP client rather than assuming one client’s configuration path applies to another. Applitools documents client-specific examples, including VS Code CLI registration, Cursor configuration, Cline settings, and a Claude Code CLI command.

Configure the three Applitools credentials correctly

Applitools distinguishes the execution key from the permissions used to inspect or resolve results:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Credential Purpose When it is needed
APPLITOOLS_API_KEY Execution key used when running Eyes visual tests. Project setup and running visual tests.
APPLITOOLS_READ_KEY Read-only access to inspection and review in inspect mode. When the assistant needs to inspect results or review without resolving them.
APPLITOOLS_WRITE_KEY Write-only access for resolution tools and review in resolve mode, the documented default. When the assistant needs to resolve results or use resolve-mode review.

Set credentials through environment variables, a project .env file, or the MCP server configuration. The setup tool can search common project and environment locations for the execution key. Avoid placing real keys in source control or sharing them in assistant prompts.

To pass keys directly through the MCP configuration, use placeholders locally and replace them with secrets kept out of published code:

Do not substitute the read or write key for the execution key: they authorize different workflows.

Set up Eyes and add a first checkpoint

  1. Confirm the project scope. For assistant-driven setup or test editing, verify that the repository contains a Playwright project using the Applitools JavaScript/TypeScript Fixtures SDK.
  2. Register the server. Install the VS Code/Cursor extension or add the manual stdio configuration using your client’s documented location and format.
  3. Provide credentials. Configure the execution key for test setup and execution. Add the read key for result inspection or the write key for resolution workflows as needed.
  4. Reload the client. Restart or reload the MCP client if its setup instructions require it, then confirm the Applitools server is available to the assistant.
  5. Ask for a key check and project setup. For example: “Verify my Applitools API key and set up Eyes for this Playwright project.” The setup tools can configure the Eyes reporter and project settings.
  6. Request a focused checkpoint edit. Choose a meaningful existing test and ask for a visual checkpoint, such as: “Add Eyes visual checkpoints to my login.spec test at the stable post-login state.” Review the proposed code changes before accepting them.
  7. Run the test. The Eyes SDK executes the test and produces results. The first run can establish a baseline; later runs can be compared with it.
  8. Inspect differences and decide deliberately. Use inspection tools to understand changes. If a baseline change is proposed, review it as a human decision: Applitools says the assistant requests explicit approval before a change is committed to a baseline.

These prompts are examples, not special commands. The assistant’s available tools depend on the client connection, credentials, project, and current server version.

Configure cross-browser testing with Ultrafast Grid

After Eyes is configured and a test has a useful checkpoint, you can ask the assistant to configure Applitools Ultrafast Grid (UFG) for cross-browser or device coverage. For example: “Configure Ultrafast Grid for this Playwright visual test and show me which browser and device targets will be used.” Review the generated configuration and confirm the selected targets match the browsers your users need. UFG is an Applitools workflow; it does not change the MCP server’s role as an assistant interface or replace SDK execution.

Common setup problems and fixes

The assistant cannot see the Applitools tools

  • Check that the server entry is in the configuration file and location expected by the MCP client.
  • Verify the command is npx, the package argument is @applitools/mcp@latest, and the client has been reloaded.
  • Follow the client-specific Applitools instructions if the client requires a registration command or a different configuration wrapper.

API key verification or test execution fails

  • Confirm APPLITOOLS_API_KEY is the execution key and is available in the process environment, project configuration, or MCP server environment.
  • Check for misspelled environment-variable names, whitespace, or an expired/incorrect key in the configuration source.
  • Do not use the read-only or write-only key as the execution key.

Inspection or resolution tools are unavailable

  • Provide APPLITOOLS_READ_KEY for inspection and inspect-mode review.
  • Provide APPLITOOLS_WRITE_KEY for resolution tools and resolve-mode review.
  • Confirm the requested action matches the key’s permission; a read key does not authorize resolution.

The assistant will not configure the project or edit a checkpoint

Check that the project is a Playwright JavaScript/TypeScript Fixtures project. The documented setup and checkpoint tools have this narrower scope even though result inspection and resolution can cover Eyes results from other supported SDKs.

A proposed baseline update seems wrong

Do not approve it just to clear a difference. Inspect the changed region and determine whether the application changed intentionally. Baseline review affects what future runs treat as expected.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

The MCP server is a workflow aid, not a shortcut around running the Eyes SDK or deciding whether a visual change is acceptable. Keep tests focused on stable, meaningful UI states; review generated edits; and distinguish an intentional design change from rendering noise before updating a baseline. The available sources do not establish performance benchmarks or a universal cost for this setup, so check Applitools’ current product and plan information for your account rather than relying on an assumed price.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot rather than a visual regression test, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It takes a URL in one request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it does not replace Eyes checkpoints or baseline-based visual testing.

Example cURL request (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each action can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with page-verdict and billing information in response headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
