The assertion is small; dependable baselines, stable page state and careful review are what make the workflow useful.
Add a screenshot assertion to a meaningful test
Playwright Test includes toHaveScreenshot() for comparing a page or locator against a saved screenshot. Navigate to the page state you want to protect, then assert its appearance:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});
Use a stable, descriptive filename and ensure the page has reached the intended state before capturing it. This assertion belongs to Playwright Test; it is not a standalone assertion for use outside the test runner. For screenshots, use toHaveScreenshot() rather than the general-purpose toMatchSnapshot() API.
Create and review the initial baseline
On its first run, when no expected image exists, Playwright captures the page until two consecutive screenshots match and saves the final capture as the reference. The snapshot is associated with the test file. Review the generated image and commit the snapshot directory to version control.

PNG is the default format. Naming the screenshot with a .webp extension selects WebP, which Playwright documents as lossless. Baseline images are part of the test: reviewers should be able to inspect them alongside the UI change they represent.
Understand comparison failures and update snapshots safely
On subsequent runs, Playwright compares the current screenshot with the stored reference. When a test fails, inspect the expected image, actual image and diff. Decide whether the difference is an unintended regression or an intentional design change before updating anything.
To regenerate references after confirming that the new appearance is intended, run:
npx playwright test --update-snapshots
This command updates image references; it does not verify that the change is correct. Include updated snapshots in the same change as the corresponding UI work and review the images before merging. Avoid automatically updating baselines simply to make a failing CI run pass.

Make captures deterministic before adjusting tolerance
Keep the rendering environment consistent
Playwright warns that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode and other factors. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment. A CI container is one documented way to improve consistency, provided its image stays aligned with the Playwright package and browser version used by the project. See Playwright’s visual-comparisons documentation.
Wait for a stable page state
The screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match before comparing the final capture with the baseline. Animations are disabled by default for screenshot assertions, and the API documents caret hiding by default. These measures help with transient rendering, but they do not make live data or environment differences deterministic.
Make the page state predictable where possible: use test data, wait for the relevant content and avoid capturing while application updates are still in progress. For unavoidable volatile areas, Playwright supports a stylesheet through stylePath to filter content such as dynamic elements or iframes. Keep exclusions narrow; hiding too much can conceal meaningful layout regressions.
Choose the capture scope that matches the visual contract
A full-page capture can protect overall composition, while a locator screenshot can focus on a component. Capture the narrowest area that still covers what the test is intended to protect. If you test several browsers or platforms, expect rendering-specific baselines: decide whether you need one canonical CI environment or explicit visual coverage across projects, and review each project’s references accordingly.

Set comparison tolerance deliberately
Playwright uses Pixelmatch for visual comparisons. Its options include maxDiffPixels, maxDiffPixelRatio and a perceived-color threshold. The documented default threshold for toHaveScreenshot() is 0.2; it is not a universal setting for every application. Start with the default behavior, inspect diffs, and loosen comparison only when the allowed variation is understood and acceptable for the UI being tested.
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png', {
maxDiffPixels: 100,
});
The value 100 is Playwright’s documentation example, not a recommended allowance for every website. A small pixel allowance may be reasonable for a known rendering variation, but can also let real visual defects pass. Review the affected diff when setting or changing tolerance. See the PageAssertions API options.
Run the suite in CI
A basic CI sequence is to install locked project dependencies, install Playwright browser binaries and system dependencies, then run the tests:
npm ci
npx playwright install --with-deps
npx playwright test
Use the browser installation command appropriate for your project and CI environment. The Playwright CI guide recommends one worker in CI for stability and reproducibility; wider parallelism or sharding can be used when the infrastructure supports it. It does not recommend caching browser binaries by default, noting that restoring a cache may take about as long as downloading them and that Linux system dependencies cannot be cached.

For container-based CI, use an image aligned with the Playwright package and browser version in your project. Playwright’s documentation includes versioned image examples, so check the current guidance for your installed version rather than copying an old tag indefinitely.
Choose a baseline and project strategy
- Whole page or component: use whole-page captures for page composition and locator captures for a component-level visual contract.
- One canonical environment or multiple projects: a single stable CI environment simplifies comparison; multiple browsers or platforms can expose cross-browser differences but need their own rendered references.
- Strict or tolerant comparison: prefer strict comparison when visual precision matters; use a pixel count, ratio or color threshold only when the permitted difference is understood and reviewed.
- Version-controlled references: committing snapshots beside the tests is the documented workflow and a natural default for a small or moderate suite. The documentation cited here does not establish a point at which external baseline management is necessary.
Troubleshoot common problems
The first run creates files instead of passing
This is expected when no reference exists. Review the generated snapshot, confirm it shows the intended page state, and commit it. A newly generated baseline is not evidence that the page is correct.
The same page fails intermittently
Check whether data, popups, animations, delayed content or rendering environment varies between runs. Make test data and page state deterministic, use the same browser and host environment for baseline generation and comparison, and narrowly filter content that cannot be stabilized.
Many tests fail after a CI or dependency change
Check for changes to the operating system or container image, browser version, Playwright package, headless mode and other rendering settings. Restore a consistent environment before updating snapshots; otherwise a broad baseline update can mask environment drift.

A diff shows only a small number of pixels
Inspect where those pixels differ and whether the change matters to the visual contract. If the variation is benign and understood, set a deliberate allowance using maxDiffPixels, maxDiffPixelRatio or threshold. Do not raise tolerance solely to clear a failure.
The assertion is unavailable outside a test
toHaveScreenshot() is provided by Playwright Test’s assertion system. Run it inside a Playwright Test test, using the test and expect imports from @playwright/test.
