You can stream to YouTube from an Ubuntu EC2 instance by running an encoder on the instance, then sending its outbound stream to the RTMPS address and stream key for your event in YouTube Live Control Room. Choose an AWS region and instance based on current availability, price, encoding workload, and network capacity; there is no one EC2 size that suits every stream. This guide covers setup, encoder settings, testing, security, and cost checks for creators in India.

What you need before you launch

  • An AWS account and permission to create EC2 instances and related resources.
  • A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have live streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days; check YouTube’s live streaming eligibility guidance for current requirements.
  • An encoder that runs on Ubuntu and can send a YouTube-supported format over RTMPS or RTMP.
  • A reliable network path from the EC2 instance to YouTube’s ingest service, plus enough compute and outbound bandwidth for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec.

In India, region choice can affect latency, instance availability, and price. Confirm the region’s current Ubuntu image and instance availability and check its live prices before you launch. Do not assume that a region closest to you is automatically the cheapest or the best fit.

Choose the region and EC2 capacity

Select an available India region and Ubuntu image

In the AWS console, select the India region where you intend to run the encoder. Choose a current Ubuntu Server Amazon Machine Image (AMI) published by Canonical’s AWS account, matching the required release and CPU architecture. Canonical publishes official Ubuntu images through its AWS account; see Canonical’s Ubuntu EC2 image guidance. Check the AMI details and regional availability before proceeding, since images and availability can change.

Size for the encoding workload, not just the stream resolution

There is no universally correct instance size for 1080p or any other resolution. Required compute depends on the encoder, codec, frame rate, preset, and whether encoding is CPU- or GPU-based. Network bandwidth also varies by EC2 instance type. A general-purpose CPU instance may work for a suitable software-encoding workload; a GPU-capable instance or a separate encoder may be worth considering for a different workload. Compare the actual instance’s compute and network specifications with the encoder’s needs, and validate them with a test stream before relying on it for an event.

A codec or bitrate recommendation is not a guarantee that an instance can encode and transmit it. For current instance choices and region-specific availability, consult AWS EC2 instance types and the EC2 console.

Launch Ubuntu and secure access

  1. In the EC2 console, choose Launch instance, select your intended India region, and choose the current official Ubuntu Server AMI for the architecture and release you need.
  2. Select an instance type based on the encoder workload and verify its availability in that region. Review current on-demand pricing for the exact instance before launching.
  3. Create or choose an EC2 key pair and download or otherwise securely retain the private key. You will need the matching key to connect.
  4. Create or select a security group. Allow SSH (normally TCP port 22) only from your known operator IP range where practical. The encoder sends its YouTube contribution stream outbound, so a public inbound RTMP rule is not required for this setup.
  5. Ensure the instance will have outbound connectivity to reach software package repositories and YouTube’s ingest service. Review its networking and routing before the stream.
  6. Launch the instance and note its public address or other connection method. Connect using the matching private key and the Ubuntu account name, ubuntu. For example, from a local terminal with a downloaded key file, the general SSH form is ssh -i /path/to/key.pem ubuntu@INSTANCE_PUBLIC_IP. Replace the path and address with your own values, and restrict access to the key file according to your operating system’s requirements.

AWS says that SSH access open to all IP addresses may be acceptable only for a brief test instance that will be stopped or terminated; it is unsafe for production. See AWS’s security group rule reference. Security groups control inbound and outbound traffic, so allow only what the deployment needs.

Prepare Ubuntu and install an encoder

After connecting, update the operating system and install or configure an encoder that supports your intended output. The exact package and commands depend on the encoder and Ubuntu release. The setup information here does not establish a particular FFmpeg command or a tested end-to-end deployment, so use the encoder’s current documentation rather than copying an unverified command.

  1. Confirm the Ubuntu release and architecture match the encoder’s installation instructions.
  2. Update installed package metadata and apply appropriate security updates using Ubuntu’s documented package-management procedure.
  3. Install the encoder from a trusted source and check that it starts successfully.
  4. Configure it to read your source video or capture input and transmit to YouTube’s event ingest address. Plan how the process will be monitored and restarted if it exits; a simple interactive SSH session is not a robust event operations plan.

Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and verify that live streaming is available for your channel.
  2. Create or select the actual live event and locate its stream settings.
  3. Copy the RTMPS URL and stream key shown for that event into your encoder’s configuration. Do not use a generic URL or key from a tutorial: use the values YouTube supplies for the stream you are setting up.
  4. Keep the key secret as you would a password. Do not publish it, commit it to a repository, or paste it into logs or screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it using YouTube’s controls and update the encoder configuration.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which it describes as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions. If the encoder reports an SSL certificate error, first verify that the RTMPS address is copied exactly; YouTube says to try specifying port 443 if needed.

Set encoder output for YouTube

Choose a supported protocol and codec

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265, and AV1, with up to 60 frames per second. The encoder must support the protocol and codec you select, and the EC2 instance must have enough compute and network capacity to sustain the output. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings before an event, since supported settings can change.

Match resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

For H.264, YouTube’s current recommended video bitrates include the following. These are YouTube recommendations, not independent performance measurements or a guarantee that a particular EC2 instance can encode the stream.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

Use a constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, as YouTube recommends in its encoder settings guidance. Keep the configured frame rate and resolution consistent with the source and the event’s intended output. Check YouTube’s guidance for other resolutions, frame rates, codecs, and audio settings rather than extrapolating from the two H.264 examples above.

Leave bandwidth headroom

YouTube advises allowing about 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the stream bitrate. As a practical check, compare the configured video bitrate plus audio and protocol overhead against the instance’s available network capacity, with additional room for variation. Test with realistic audio and motion: a static image may not reveal issues that appear during a moving scene or a more demanding encode.

Test before the event

  1. Start the encoder with the event’s RTMPS URL and stream key. If possible, use a private or unlisted test event appropriate to your channel and workflow.
  2. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream health indicators. Confirm that video and audio arrive, the expected resolution and frame rate are present, and there are no sustained health warnings.
  3. Test representative footage, motion, and audio for long enough to reveal encoding or network instability. Confirm that the EC2 host has capacity left over rather than operating at its limits.
  4. Set up in advance rather than beginning the first test immediately before going live. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend approximately 20% bandwidth headroom and preparation before the event; see YouTube’s streaming tips.

Understand the AWS cost categories

EC2 charges depend on the selected instance, region, and time it runs. Storage and other provisioned resources can also incur charges, and internet data transfer out can be significant for a continuous video stream. Review AWS’s current pricing for the exact India region, instance, storage, public IPv4 use if applicable, and expected transfer volume before starting. AWS prices and regional availability change, so a cost estimate should be based on your actual configuration and runtime, not a generic India figure.

AWS states that customers receive 100 GB of internet data transfer out free each month, aggregated across AWS services and Regions, except China and GovCloud. This is a general monthly allowance, not a stream-specific estimate and not a statement that EC2 usage or all related costs are free. See AWS EC2 pricing for current terms and pricing details.

For a temporary stream host, stop the encoder and terminate the EC2 instance when it is no longer needed. Check the console for storage volumes, IP addresses, or other resources left behind: terminating an instance does not necessarily remove every billable resource associated with a deployment.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
SSH connection times out Security group, route, address, or client IP mismatch Confirm the instance is running, use its current reachable address, check that SSH is allowed from your current IP, and verify routing. Do not solve the problem by leaving SSH open to all sources.
Encoder cannot connect to YouTube Incorrect event ingest URL or stream key, wrong protocol, or missing outbound connectivity Copy the RTMPS URL and key again from the correct event; confirm the instance has outbound network access and the encoder is configured for the selected protocol.
RTMPS SSL or certificate error Address typo or encoder connection configuration Verify YouTube’s exact RTMPS address. YouTube says to try port 443 if needed.
Stream health warnings or dropped frames Insufficient network headroom, unstable connectivity, or excessive output bitrate Compare the complete output rate with the instance’s available network capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom, and test a lower supported bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the chosen output.
Video stutters, encoder lags, or instance CPU stays saturated Encoding workload exceeds the selected instance’s compute capacity Check encoder load and instance metrics; reduce encoding complexity or output demands, or evaluate an instance better suited to the codec and workload. Re-test before the event.
Channel cannot start a live stream Live streaming eligibility or account restriction Check verification and the channel’s current live streaming status in YouTube Studio and review YouTube’s eligibility guidance.
