YouTube Live provides a primary and a backup ingestion address, and its API describes sending the same program to both at once. To build a two-encoder setup, route the station’s identical program feed to those destinations, connect each encoder with the stream URL and key, then test what happens when the primary path is interrupted. Do not assume that two encoders automatically provide seamless failover: the result depends on the encoder workflow and must be verified before a broadcast.
What “two backup encoders” means on YouTube
YouTube’s Live API provides a primary ingestion address and an optional backup ingestion address for a simultaneous second copy of the content sent to the primary. In practical terms, one encoder can send the station’s program to the primary destination while a second encoder sends the same program to the backup destination, if the chosen devices or workflow support those simultaneous outputs. YouTube Live API documentation
This is a redundant-ingestion arrangement, not proof that YouTube will switch seamlessly between two separately operated encoder machines in every configuration. Encoder behavior, the continuity of the audio and video feeds, protocol compatibility, and the receiving workflow all matter. Test the actual setup rather than treating the word “backup” as a guarantee of automatic failover.

Before you configure the encoders
- Confirm channel eligibility. If the channel has never streamed live, enable live streaming in YouTube Studio first. YouTube says initial activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Choose a consistent feed. Both encoder paths should carry the same station program, including the audio and corresponding video presentation. Decide how each device will receive that feed and verify the connections.
- Check the encoder workflow. Confirm that the device or software can send to the required primary and backup destinations simultaneously. Capabilities and menu labels vary by manufacturer; YouTube does not provide a universal menu-by-menu procedure for two independent encoder boxes.
- Choose a supported protocol. YouTube’s API exposes RTMP/RTMPS and HLS ingestion fields. Use a protocol supported by both the encoder workflow and the destination details provided for the stream.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: enter it only into the intended encoder and do not publish or share it.
Set up the primary and backup paths
- Create or select the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select the one you will use. For a first-ever live broadcast on that channel, complete live-stream activation and allow for the possible activation delay.
- Get the connection details. In the stream setup, copy the stream URL and stream key. In the encoder, enter the URL in the server or RTMP server field and the key in the stream-key field. YouTube’s setup guidance describes these as the standard encoder connection details. YouTube encoder setup guidance
- Point the first output to the primary destination. Configure the primary encoder’s server or ingestion URL using the primary address supplied for the stream.
- Point the redundant output to the backup destination. Configure the second encoder—or a second output in one encoder workflow—to use YouTube’s backup ingestion address. The API describes the same content being sent to both addresses simultaneously; the relevant encoder must support that arrangement.
- Match the program feed and compatible settings. Ensure the two paths carry the station’s same program content. Use settings accepted by the chosen encoders and ingestion protocol; there is no universal setting menu for every hardware or software product.
- Start the feeds and inspect the preview. Start the encoder output and check the stream status or preview in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s normal workflow is to wait for the preview and then select Go live.
- Test the backup before relying on it. Run an off-air or private test of both paths. Interrupt the primary path in a controlled test and observe the actual result in Live Control Room. Confirm whether the stream continues, changes, or requires operator action, and document the recovery procedure for whoever is on duty.
RTMP/RTMPS or HLS?
The appropriate protocol depends on the encoder and the station’s latency requirements. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Its HLS guidance also gives specific transport requirements that must be supported by the encoder. YouTube HLS ingestion guidance
| Consideration | RTMP/RTMPS | HLS |
|---|---|---|
| Latency | YouTube describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP. | Higher latency than RTMP, according to YouTube. |
| Backup destination | Use the primary and backup ingestion details supplied for the stream and supported by the encoder. | YouTube says a backup server URL can be copied from Live Control Room when an HLS stream key is selected. |
| Protocol-specific requirements | Confirm the selected encoder supports the required RTMP or RTMPS destination. | Segments must be 1–4 seconds; use TS segment format and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Requests must use HTTPS POST/PUT. Do not encrypt the stream apart from HTTPS. |
YouTube’s HLS API guide illustrates redundant ingestion with the hostname a.upload.youtube.com and copy=0 for the primary, and b.upload.youtube.com and copy=1 for the redundant copy. The copy parameter must differ between the two URLs to avoid corrupting the stream. These are documentation examples, not substitutes for the actual URLs supplied for your channel’s stream. Choose an implementation that fits the station
Two independent hardware encoders
Use this approach when each unit can receive the same station program feed and the units can send to the primary and backup addresses at the same time. Before buying or deploying hardware, verify its manufacturer documentation for simultaneous outputs, supported protocol, and compatibility with the station’s audio and video feed. No particular encoder model is established here as supporting all of those requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOne encoder with two outputs
A single encoder workflow may be able to send the same output to both ingestion addresses. Verify that it supports concurrent destinations and that it handles interruption as intended. The YouTube API establishes the primary/backup destination concept; the actual encoder capability is product-specific.

Software or standalone hardware
YouTube supports software encoders as well as standalone hardware. Choose according to the station’s operating capacity and tested reliability: software may suit a station that can maintain its computer and network, while dedicated hardware may suit a setup designed around an appliance. Neither category alone guarantees failover; test both paths and the recovery steps you will use.
Troubleshooting a two-encoder setup
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder will not connect | The server URL or stream key may be incorrect or placed in the wrong field. | Copy the stream URL and key again from the stream setup. Check that the URL is in the server field and the key is in the stream-key field; keep the key private. |
| Only one path appears to be sending | The encoder may not support simultaneous primary and backup outputs, or the second output may not be enabled. | Check the encoder’s documentation and output status. If using two devices, verify each device’s destination and network path independently. |
| Backup does not take over as expected | The configured backup destination does not guarantee seamless switching for every independent-encoder workflow. | Repeat a controlled interruption test and observe the Live Control Room status. Establish whether operator action is needed and update the station’s runbook. |
| HLS stream fails or behaves erratically | Segment format, duration, playlist, request method, encryption, or copy parameter may not match YouTube’s HLS requirements. | Check 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist of no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, no encryption beyond HTTPS, and distinct primary/backup copy values. |
| Stream preview does not appear | The encoder may not have started successfully, or the channel may not yet be enabled for live streaming. | Check encoder status and the stream details in Live Control Room. If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, account for YouTube’s stated activation period of up to 24 hours. |
