You can use SRS (Simple Realtime Server) on an Ubuntu VPS to relay an encoder’s stream to YouTube Live: publish to your VPS, have SRS forward the feed to the active YouTube ingest URL and stream key, then confirm the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Pin an SRS version and use its matching configuration; commands and settings from different releases are not interchangeable.

What SRS does in a YouTube Live setup

SRS is a media server between your encoder or other stream source and YouTube. Your source publishes to SRS on the VPS, and SRS forwards that feed to YouTube’s ingest service. YouTube Live Control Room still manages the broadcast: SRS is neither a YouTube account nor a replacement for its live controls. SRS documents RTMP publishing as well as delivery and transmuxing paths such as HTTP-FLV and HLS; choose the configuration that matches the SRS version you deploy. SRS project documentation

The path is: encoder or source → SRS on the VPS → YouTube ingest. This can make a VPS the relay point, but it does not by itself guarantee lower latency or better performance. Encoding, both network legs, YouTube processing and viewer playback affect the result.

Choose and pin an SRS deployment before configuring it

Use one release’s instructions and configuration throughout. SRS materials include both source-build and Docker deployment paths, but the examples are version-specific. The SRS v4 build guide demonstrates cloning the 4.0release branch and building from srs/trunk; its Ubuntu 20 recommendation applies to that documented v4 workflow, not every current release. Current project materials describe SRS 8.0 and recommend Docker, while the v7 RTMP documentation is labeled unstable. Do not combine a v3 or v4 wiki configuration with a v7 or v8 binary without checking compatibility. SRS project · SRS v4 getting started · SRS v7 RTMP documentation

For a reproducible deployment, record the Ubuntu release and architecture, the exact SRS release or container tag, and the configuration file you use. A source build also needs the prerequisites for that version. With Docker, use a pinned image tag, map only the ports your setup requires, and preserve any configuration you need across container replacement. The available documentation does not establish a universal VPS size or prove performance for a particular stream workload.

Source build or Docker?

Consideration Source build Docker
Version control Choose and build a release or branch; keep the checkout and build instructions aligned. Pin an image tag rather than relying on a moving tag.
Prerequisites Install the build prerequisites required by the selected SRS version. Run a compatible container runtime and map the required ports.
Configuration and logs Use the configuration and status/log procedures for that release. Persist configuration and any logs you need outside a replaceable container.
Best fit Useful if you need direct control of the build and are comfortable maintaining its dependencies. Useful if you prefer a repeatable image-based deployment and can manage its configuration and networking.

Prepare the VPS and restrict network access

Identify the inbound protocol and port your publisher will use, and the outbound path SRS needs to reach YouTube. SRS examples include RTMP on port 1935 and, in broader examples, HTTP and API ports; these are not a checklist of ports to expose. Allow inbound access only for the configured publisher and restrict management interfaces to trusted sources. The forwarding process needs outbound connectivity to YouTube’s ingest service. Check the port mappings in the exact SRS configuration you chose before changing the VPS firewall. SRS RTMP documentation

Do not assume an Indian VPS city or provider is automatically best. No universal best region or verified India-specific YouTube ingest map is established here. Compare candidate locations from your actual source location, testing stability, packet loss, round-trip behavior and YouTube preview or stream health. If the producer is also running on the VPS, assess the source-to-VPS and VPS-to-YouTube legs separately.

Get the active YouTube stream URL and key

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live stream and open its stream settings.
  2. Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that active stream. YouTube describes the key as what tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it like a password: do not put a real key in a tutorial, screenshot, public configuration, shell history or shared log.
  3. If a key may have been exposed, reset it as a channel owner or manager and update the forwarding configuration to use the replacement.

YouTube documents retrieving the RTMPS URL separately from the ordinary RTMP URL and recommends RTMPS. Use the exact URL displayed in Live Control Room, along with the stream key; do not assume a generic endpoint or port applies to every stream. YouTube: Manage your live stream settings · YouTube: Stream on YouTube Live

Configure the publisher and SRS forwarder

The incoming publisher URL depends on the application name and stream name in your chosen SRS configuration. SRS examples use a pattern such as rtmp://<server>/live/<stream>; the path is not universal. Configure the encoder to publish to the VPS endpoint, and configure SRS to forward to the exact YouTube ingest URL and key for the active stream. Follow the forwarding syntax documented for your pinned SRS version; do not paste a v3 or v4 example into a different release without confirming compatibility. SRS publishing examples and documentation

When the forwarding client and configuration support it, use the RTMPS destination from Live Control Room so the connection to YouTube is encrypted. Keep credentials out of logs and screenshots, and restrict access to the configuration holding the key.

Set encoder values using YouTube’s current guidance

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a VPS or route can sustain the stream. Recheck YouTube’s settings page before a broadcast because its guidance can change. YouTube encoder settings and bitrates

Setting Guidance
Protocol YouTube recommends RTMPS; RTMP/RTMPS are listed protocols.
Bitrate mode CBR (constant bitrate).
Video codecs H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1.
Audio codecs AAC or MP3.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps.
Keyframe interval Two seconds recommended; no more than four seconds.
H.264 at 1080p30 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, according to YouTube’s settings table.

Bitrate recommendations vary with codec, resolution and frame rate. Leave headroom for network overhead and fluctuations, then test the actual path rather than treating the table’s encoder recommendation as a VPS bandwidth measurement. YouTube also recommends testing with motion and audio resembling the real broadcast. Its guidance says 4K/2160 streams cannot use the low-latency option and are set to normal latency; do not infer a fixed end-to-end delay from SRS settings alone.

Start the relay and verify the full route

  1. Start SRS with the configuration for the pinned version. Confirm the process is running and consult that release’s status and log instructions.
  2. Start the upstream encoder and publish to the configured SRS endpoint. Verify that its app and stream name match the SRS configuration.
  3. Check that SRS is forwarding to the active YouTube stream’s current URL and key.
  4. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and inspect stream health before selecting Go Live. Confirm that the preview has both picture and sound.
  5. For a meaningful test, use motion and audio like the real event and allow time to spot interruptions or health warnings before broadcasting to viewers.

YouTube’s encoder workflow calls for starting the encoder and checking the preview before going live. A feed reaching the VPS is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. YouTube encoder setup and stream health guidance

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom What to check and fix
SRS does not start Confirm the selected binary or image matches the configuration. Review the release-specific logs and status instructions, then check configuration syntax and any required build dependencies.
Encoder cannot publish to the VPS Verify the VPS address, configured SRS app/stream path, inbound firewall rule and port mapping. Do not open unrelated SRS ports to solve a path or configuration mismatch.
SRS receives the feed but YouTube does not Check outbound VPS connectivity, then confirm the forwarder targets the URL and key for the currently active Live Control Room stream. Replace a stale key if the stream settings changed.
RTMPS connection or SSL error Copy the RTMPS URL directly from Live Control Room and verify the port and connection details against YouTube’s instructions. If the forwarding client or configuration does not support RTMPS, check compatibility before changing protocols. YouTube RTMPS troubleshooting
No preview or unhealthy stream Check SRS and encoder logs, confirm the full publishing and forwarding path, and inspect Live Control Room’s preview and stream health. Test representative audio and motion; review codec, bitrate and keyframe settings against YouTube’s current recommendations.
The stream key may have leaked Reset the key in Live Control Room and replace it in the SRS forwarding configuration. Treat the former key as compromised.
Viewers report delay Separate source-to-SRS relay delay from YouTube processing and viewer-player buffering. The SRS v3 wiki’s low-latency example describes a historical SRS mode, not guaranteed end-to-end YouTube latency. SRS v3 low-latency wiki

Copyright and YouTube live eligibility

Before sending a program to YouTube, confirm that you have the rights to its video, music and other included material, and review YouTube’s live-stream policies for the channel and content. A technically healthy relay does not establish that a broadcast is authorized or eligible to remain live. YouTube’s requirements and enforcement can change, so check the current policies and stream status in your account. YouTube Live guidance

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube 24/7 rather than relay a camera or live encoder feed through your own VPS, StreamNeo is a different, managed option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
