To put two cameras, gameplay and a webcam, or another combination of sources on a YouTube livestream, arrange them as separate sources in an OBS Studio scene and send that composed scene to YouTube through an encoder stream. In this guide, “split-screen” means multiple panels within one stream canvas. YouTube’s horizontal-and-vertical dual-format feature is different: it gives viewers different aspect-ratio presentations, rather than building a multi-source layout for you.

What you need before you start

YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance for current requirements. The cited guidance does not establish a universal 24-hour wait after verification.

For a composed scene, use an encoder workflow: OBS Studio is one option, and it is free. You need the sources you intend to show, such as a camera, game capture, window, or display. A new camera, microphone, or capture card is not automatically required; only add hardware if your chosen source needs it. YouTube describes encoder streaming as useful for broadcasts with overlays and externally arranged camera or microphone inputs.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go live to enter Live Control Room.
  2. Prepare the stream details and choose the encoder setup that provides the server and stream-key information. Confirm the current on-screen labels, as interface controls can change.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not show it in your scene, share it publicly, or include it in a recording.

YouTube’s encoder workflow and current live-stream guidance are documented at Get started with live streaming.

Build the split-screen scene in OBS

  1. Create a scene. In OBS, add a scene for this broadcast. A scene is the composition that will be sent to YouTube.
  2. Add one source for each panel. Use the add-source control to choose the applicable input: camera or capture device, game capture, window capture, display capture, image, or text. The source list is the layer stack: sources higher in the list can cover sources beneath them.
  3. Arrange and size each source. Select a source in the preview and drag its bounding box to position or resize it. For a clean two-panel split, place one source in each half of the canvas and align the edges. To crop excess from a source, hold Alt while dragging an edge.
  4. Check what is visible. Make sure neither panel unintentionally covers the other, important content is not cropped, and text or faces remain readable at the intended viewing size.

OBS’s official OBS Studio Overview Guide covers sources, scene layering, transforms, and testing. Its screenshots date from 2021, so labels or visuals may differ in newer versions.

Choose a layout that suits the content

Two cameras side by side

Add each camera as its own source, size them to occupy opposite halves, and leave enough room around faces so they are not clipped. Check both audio feeds as well as the picture: if both microphones are active, listen for echo or competing levels before broadcasting.

Gameplay with a presenter

Use game capture, window capture, or display capture for the main panel, then add a camera source as a smaller picture-in-picture panel. Position the camera panel where it does not obscure game controls, captions, or other essential information.

Think about mobile framing

Small text and narrow panels can be hard to read on a phone. Preview the stream at a smaller size, and keep the most important action in the most prominent panel. A horizontal composition designed for a desktop may not translate well to a vertical presentation.

Set video, audio, and performance deliberately

Choose a base canvas resolution that accommodates the layout, then set the output resolution and frame rate for the stream. There is no single bitrate or resolution that suits every setup: the right values depend on the encoder, available upload capacity, and YouTube’s current recommendations. Consult YouTube’s current guidance and OBS’s stream settings, rather than copying a value without regard to your connection or computer.

In OBS, confirm the intended microphone and other audio devices, and listen to a test recording or private stream. OBS notes that 60 fps can demand more system resources than 30 fps; test that your computer can handle the chosen frame rate along with all active sources. If performance is unstable, reduce workload or settings and test again before going public.

Connect OBS, test, and go live

  1. In OBS stream settings, choose the YouTube service/server option and enter the stream key from Live Control Room.
  2. Start the encoder feed and check the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Verify framing, source visibility, audio, and stream health.
  3. Run a private or unlisted test when appropriate. Fix cropping, audio balance, or performance problems before the public broadcast.
  4. Before going live, confirm the correct event and audience settings in YouTube. During the broadcast, monitor source visibility, audio balance, dropped frames, and chat.
  5. When the program is finished, end the broadcast using the current Live Control Room workflow.

OBS recommends testing before a stream. The official OBS guide explains its streaming setup and testing concepts; YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the platform side.

Split-screen composition is not YouTube dual-format live

YouTube also supports simultaneous horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16) live formats. That feature controls how the broadcast is presented to different viewers; it does not substitute for adding and arranging multiple sources in an OBS scene. YouTube says the vertical presentation is a center crop of the horizontal feed by default, with editing-canvas choices including center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked.

For third-party encoder control of both formats, YouTube’s instructions say to select Encoder and use RTMP(S), use the second stream key for vertical, and send each format to its matching key. The vertical format must be configured before streaming begins; it cannot be added after the stream has started. The formats share one live URL and chat. Viewers in the Shorts feed see the vertical format, while other viewers see horizontal. YouTube says analytics for only the vertical stream become available 24 hours after the stream; that timing is about metrics, not an eligibility wait. Check YouTube’s current dual-format guidance for availability and controls.

A multi-panel horizontal scene can crop badly when shown vertically. Preview both presentations and adjust the vertical layout before going live if you use dual-format streaming.

Troubleshooting common split-screen problems

  • One source hides another: Check the source order in OBS. A higher source can cover lower layers; reorder it or resize and reposition it.
  • A panel is cut off or has unwanted edges: Select the source and adjust its bounding box. If cropping is intended, use Alt-drag on an edge; otherwise reset or readjust the transform.
  • YouTube receives no picture: Confirm OBS is using the correct YouTube service/server and stream key, and that the encoder feed has started. Check the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
  • Picture arrives but audio is missing or unclear: Verify the selected audio devices and that the intended sources are active. Listen for overlapping microphones, echo, or one source overpowering another.
  • The stream stutters or the computer struggles: Check dropped frames and system load. Reduce demanding settings or source workload, especially if using 60 fps, then run another test. Also confirm that upload capacity suits the chosen stream settings.
  • The vertical presentation is poorly framed: A center crop may cut off a side-by-side panel or important action. Configure and preview the vertical layout before starting; it cannot be added once the stream is underway.

Or let it run in the cloud
