To set up a new Sonos system, plug in a speaker, open the Sonos app on a supported iOS or Android device, choose Speaker or component under the setup prompt, sign in or create a Sonos account, then tap Add when the app finds the speaker. To add a speaker to a system you already use, open Settings → Add Speaker or Component in the app and follow the prompts. Menu wording can vary by product and app version.

Before you start

  • Use a supported phone or tablet. Sonos requires an iOS or Android device to set up a new system or add products; a desktop app cannot perform those setup actions. The current Sonos app lists iOS 18+, iPadOS 18+, Android 10+, and Fire OS 7+ as minimums. Android support excludes x86 devices and Chromebooks, and beta operating systems are not supported. Check Sonos’s app requirements because minimum versions can change.
  • Choose the correct controller for your system. Sonos also provides the S1 Controller for compatible older systems. Its listed minimums are iOS 12+, iPadOS 13+, Android 8.0+ (not Chromebooks), and Fire OS 7+. Compatibility depends on the products in the system; for example, Sonos Five does not support S1. Confirm compatibility before switching apps.
  • Check the home network. The app and Sonos products need to communicate on the same local subnet. Sonos’s general requirements call for a Wi-Fi router and high-speed wired internet, such as cable, fiber, or DSL. Sonos products can connect to 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and WPA1/WPA2 Personal or open networks; newer products and software may support additional modes.
  • Avoid network arrangements Sonos does not support. These include satellite internet, mobile hotspots or LTE routers, guest networks or networks that require a portal login, 5 GHz-only routers, Ethernet-over-power adapters, WPA/WPA2 Enterprise, and VPNs that block local-network access. See Sonos system requirements for details.
  • Have power and a suitable location ready. Sonos recommends placing the product where you intend to use it and connecting it to power before opening the app.

Set up a new Sonos system

  1. Connect the speaker to power.
  2. Open the Sonos app on your iOS or Android device.
  3. When the app displays Get started with setup, choose Speaker or component.
  4. Create a Sonos account or sign in to an existing one.
  5. When the app detects the speaker, choose Add.
  6. Follow the remaining on-screen instructions. You can add music and other content services during setup or later.

Sonos’s Sonos One setup instructions show this flow as a product example. Other products use a similar account-and-add process, but follow the prompts shown for your specific speaker.

Add a speaker to a Sonos system you already use

  1. Power on the new product and wait for its status light to flash green. Sonos identifies this as the ready-to-add state.
  2. Open the Sonos app and go to Settings.
  3. In the section for your system, choose Add Speaker or Component.
  4. Follow the app’s prompts to finish adding the product.

Sonos says a system can contain up to 32 products. If you use the S1 Controller, the documented menu path is Settings → System → Add Product; use it only with products and a system that support S1. See Sonos’s instructions for adding a product.

Fix a speaker the app cannot find

If the current app stays on “Searching for nearby products…” or S1 reports “Product not found,” try these steps in order. A factory reset is not the first step for every discovery issue.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Check power and readiness. Make sure the product is plugged in and its status light flashes green. If it was set up on another system and is not in this ready-to-add state, Sonos directs users to reset it to factory settings before trying again. A previously configured product that has gone missing from a system may need different missing-product guidance.
  2. Reboot the product. Restart it, wait for it to power back on, then choose Try Again in the app.
  3. Test at close range. Temporarily move the speaker nearer to the router and keep the phone or tablet within 10 feet of the speaker during the test. This is Sonos troubleshooting guidance, not a general Wi-Fi range guarantee.
  4. Try another mobile device. Install or open the Sonos app on another supported phone or tablet and retry setup.
  5. Try Ethernet if the product has a port. Connect it directly to the router and retry. If setup succeeds, Sonos says you can later remove the cable by following its instructions for switching between wired and wireless connections.

Sonos’s complete product-not-found troubleshooting steps cover the current app and S1 Controller.

Choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet based on your home network

Neither connection method is universally better for setup. Decide based on the speaker’s ports, signal at its intended location, and whether a wired product can stay connected.

Setup option When it may fit Important condition
Wi-Fi The home Wi-Fi reaches the speaker reliably and the phone or tablet can communicate with it on the local network. Sonos recommends a Wi-Fi mesh router if you need to extend coverage for wireless Sonos use.
Ethernet The speaker has an Ethernet port and a direct connection to the router is practical, including as a troubleshooting test. For wired Sonos setup, at least one Sonos product must remain connected by Ethernet and the network must support STP. In a mesh Wi-Fi network, that wired product must connect to the primary mesh node.

These wired-network requirements and other supported arrangements are described in Sonos’s system requirements.

Pair two speakers for stereo after setup

Stereo pairing is a separate step from adding a speaker to the system. Sonos allows stereo pairing only between speakers of the same model; a speaker with a microphone can also pair with the SL version of its model. For placement, Sonos recommends setting the speakers 8–10 feet apart and sitting 8–12 feet from them at the preferred listening position. See Sonos stereo-pair guidance.
