To use separate accounts in one browser, create a browser profile for each context, give each profile a recognizable name, then sign in to the relevant websites from the right profile. A profile keeps much of your browsing data—such as cookies, history, bookmarks and settings—separate from other profiles. It does not automatically sign you into websites, and it does not stop another person who can use your device from opening your profile.

What browser profiles separate—and what they do not

A browser profile is a separate browsing context within one installation of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. It is more than another tab: depending on the browser, profiles can keep website cookies and logins, history, bookmarks, extensions and settings apart. Create the profile first, then sign in to each website you want to use in that context.

Profiles are useful for keeping work and personal browsing apart, or for using two accounts on the same website without repeatedly signing out. They are not a security boundary on a shared device. Google cautions that anyone with access to the device can switch Chrome profiles and see information such as visited websites. If other people must not see your browsing, use separate operating-system accounts and lock your session.

How to set up separate browser profiles for multiple accounts

Google Chrome on desktop

  1. Open Chrome and select the Profile icon in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Add Chrome profile.
  3. Give the profile a name, photo and color scheme so you can recognize it.
  4. If Chrome offers Google Account sign-in, choose whether to sign in. This is optional for creating a local profile; signing in can save bookmarks, passwords and settings to that Google Account and make them available on other signed-in devices.
  5. Open the profile, go to the websites you use, and sign in to the accounts intended for that context.
  6. To switch later, select the Profile icon and choose the profile you want. To show profile choices when a new browser session opens, go to Profile > Manage Chrome profile and select Show on startup.

Chrome profiles keep information such as bookmarks, history, passwords and settings separate. See Google Chrome Help: Manage Chrome with multiple profiles.

Firefox profiles separate bookmarks, passwords, settings, add-ons, history and browsing data such as cookies. If you only need separate site logins and cookies within one Firefox profile, Mozilla’s Multi-Account Containers add-on is a narrower alternative: containers separate cookies, logins and site data, but not the profile’s bookmarks, settings or add-ons. See Mozilla Support: Manage Firefox profiles.

Safari profiles separate history, cookies, website data, extensions, Tab Groups and favorites under Apple’s documented conditions. They do not separate everything: passwords in iCloud Keychain are available in any profile, and some settings and bookmark features are shared. Deleting a profile removes its tabs, history and website data. Safari profiles sync across devices when they use Safari 17 or later, the same Apple Account and Safari enabled in iCloud. See Apple Support: Use profiles in Safari on Mac and Apple Safari User Guide: Create distinct browsing profiles in Safari on Mac.

Choose the right kind of separation

  • For separate work and personal contexts: Create full browser profiles. Chrome and Edge offer menu-based setup; Firefox provides a profile manager, though its new interface may not have reached your installation.
  • For multiple logins to sites in Firefox without separate browser settings: Use Multi-Account Containers when separating cookies and site data is sufficient. Choose separate profiles if you also want separate bookmarks, settings and add-ons.
  • For Safari on Mac: Profiles separate many browsing items, but not iCloud Keychain passwords or every setting. Safari profile syncing depends on the supported version and iCloud configuration.
  • For a shared device: Browser profiles organize browsing; they do not prevent someone with access to the device from switching profiles. Use separate operating-system accounts for stronger separation.

After creating profiles: avoid mixing accounts

  • Name profiles for their purpose, such as “Work” and “Personal,” and use distinct colors or photos where available.
  • Check the active profile before opening a site or entering credentials; each profile has its own window or profile context.
  • Sign in to the relevant websites separately in each profile. Creating a browser profile does not create or authenticate website accounts.
  • Consider sync deliberately. Chrome account sign-in can make profile data available on other signed-in devices; Edge lets you choose sync or to start without existing data; Safari sync depends on iCloud settings.
