Satellite SOS is not a universal phone setting: availability depends on your exact phone model, destination, software, and—in some cases—the region where the phone was purchased. Before a trip, check the current support page for your phone, complete the platform-specific preparations below, and learn the emergency connection flow while you still have ordinary service.

Check that your phone and destination are supported

Start with the manufacturer’s current eligibility information for your exact device and destination. Apple and Google maintain separate country and device lists, and support on one platform does not establish support on the other.

  • iPhone: Apple says Emergency SOS via satellite requires iPhone 14 or later. Confirm your destination is listed and check the minimum iOS version specified for that market. For international travel, also check Apple’s exception for devices purchased in certain countries or regions; destination support alone may not settle eligibility. See Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite instructions and availability.
  • Google Pixel: Check whether your exact Pixel model and destination are supported on Google’s Satellite SOS availability page, then verify the status on the phone. Google notes that service can depend on network coverage, network conditions, and government agencies, so a country on the list is not a guarantee of service in a particular place or emergency.

If either the device or destination is not listed as supported, do not plan on that phone feature as your emergency contact method for the trip.

Prepare Satellite SOS on an iPhone

  1. Update before leaving coverage. Install the latest iOS version while you have reliable cellular or Wi-Fi access. Apple recommends updating before going off-grid; some regions also require a stated minimum iOS version.
  2. Review emergency details. Set up or check Medical ID and add emergency contacts as appropriate. These preparations help provide relevant information, but they do not expand service availability.
  3. Try the demo. Use Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite demo before a remote trip so you can become familiar with the prompts without initiating an actual emergency request.
  4. Learn where to find the feature. When cellular and Wi-Fi service are unavailable, Apple says the Satellite option can appear through Settings or Control Centre. When ordinary coverage is available, those controls may instead open the demo. Follow the on-screen emergency flow if you need help for real.

Prepare Satellite SOS on a Google Pixel

  1. Verify availability in Settings. Check the phone’s Satellite SOS status as well as Google’s current device and destination list. Eligibility and country availability can change.
  2. Keep Google Messages as the default messaging app. Google says Satellite SOS is unavailable if you change the default messaging app. Its support guidance states: “You’ll need Google Messages as your default messaging app to avail the service.”
  3. Review emergency information and contacts. Make sure the information saved on the device is current, and understand the sequence before travel: try to contact emergency services, select Satellite SOS when it is offered, complete the questionnaire, and follow the positioning prompts.
  4. Know what to expect outdoors. The phone guides you toward a satellite connection. Stay outside with a clear view of the sky, follow the prompts, and remain ready to receive replies. Google says the provider should reply by text within a few minutes, but this is not a guaranteed response time.

What happens during a satellite SOS connection

These features are emergency contact pathways for situations where ordinary cellular and Wi-Fi access are unavailable—not general-purpose satellite chat. If you face an emergency, use the phone’s presented emergency flow and follow its instructions. The device may ask questions and guide you to position it for a satellite connection; obstructions, location, local service availability, and other conditions can affect whether communication is possible and how quickly it happens.
