You can use Samsung DeX on a supported Galaxy Tab without connecting a monitor: standalone DeX turns the tablet’s own screen into a desktop-style workspace. To expand to a TV or monitor, choose wired HDMI or wireless display only after checking that your exact Tab model supports that mode. A keyboard and mouse are optional, but make longer work sessions feel more like using a laptop.
Check your Galaxy Tab’s DeX compatibility first
DeX support differs by connection mode, even among tablets in the same family. Check the model-specific lists in Samsung’s Galaxy Tab DeX compatibility and setup guide before buying an adapter or choosing a display connection. The lists below are Samsung US guidance; availability can vary by model, region, and software version.

Pay particular attention to FE and Lite variants. Samsung says the Tab S9 FE, S9 FE+, S10 FE, S10 FE+, and S10 Lite do not support HDMI output. Those FE models and the S10 Lite also do not support Wireless DeX; the S10 Lite does not support standalone DeX. Verify the exact model name rather than assuming another Tab in its series has the same capabilities.
Start DeX on the tablet screen
Standalone DeX is the simplest laptop-like setup when you do not have an external display. On a supported tablet:

- Swipe down from the top-right of the screen with two fingers to open Quick Settings.
- Tap Samsung DeX. Follow any first-use prompt and wait for the desktop-style interface to load.
- Open apps and arrange them as needed. Use the touchscreen or S Pen, or connect a keyboard and mouse.
To return to the regular tablet interface, open Quick Settings and tap Samsung DeX again.
Newer home-screen workflow
Samsung documents a newer app-window workflow for Galaxy Tabs running Android 16 with One UI 8.0 or higher. Open an app, swipe down on its header bar to put it in a pop-up window, then open more apps and move or resize their windows. This version also allows switching to standalone DeX from the Home screen; do not expect the same controls on older software.

Use multiple DeX workspaces on supported software
On a Galaxy Tab running Android 16 with One UI 8.0 or higher, open Recents while in DeX and select the Add desktop icon, shown as a monitor with a plus sign. Samsung says this feature supports up to four workspaces. Switch between them from Recents. The Add desktop control is specific to the supported software version.
Connect a TV or monitor with HDMI
Use wired DeX when your tablet supports HDMI output and you want to work on an HDMI-equipped TV or monitor. You will need a DeX cable, an HDMI-to-USB Type-C cable, or an HDMI adapter that is compatible with your tablet. Standalone and wireless DeX do not require an HDMI adapter.

- Connect the USB-C end to the tablet and the HDMI end to the display.
- Unlock the tablet if prompted. The first time, tap Start to enable Full Desktop mode.
- If the display mirrors the tablet or the prompt does not appear, open the DeX notification or tap the DeX icon in Quick Settings to switch to DeX.
To leave wired DeX, switch modes from Quick Settings or disconnect the cable. Confirm HDMI support for your exact Tab model before buying an adapter.
Connect a display wirelessly
Wireless DeX is useful when a compatible TV or smart monitor is available and you want to avoid a cable. On a supported tablet, use this path:

- Open Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX.
- Tap Connect wirelessly, then select the TV or smart monitor.
- Tap Start now and approve the connection on the display if prompted.
Keep the tablet and display close to help reduce stuttering or lag. Samsung’s tablet guide says touchscreen displays are not compatible with DeX functionality, so do not expect to control DeX by touching the external screen. Check the tablet-specific compatibility list for your model; Samsung’s separate input guide may describe display support for different model generations.
Add keyboard and mouse input
You can use DeX with touch and S Pen alone. For a more laptop-like setup, choose a keyboard cover made for your particular Tab or pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. A keyboard cover with a touchpad combines input with a stand; Samsung says a supported Book Cover Keyboard can launch DeX from Quick Settings, and some covers also use Fn plus the DeX key. The on-screen touchpad is another option.

For wired DeX, Samsung’s keyboard and mouse guide says wired peripherals do not work through the DeX cable in the configuration it describes; Bluetooth input is the documented option. Samsung also notes that some tablets do not fit the DeX Pad or DeX Station, so these legacy docks are not a default tablet accessory recommendation. Adjust DeX display and input settings
While using DeX, open Settings > Samsung DeX to find available display and input controls. Samsung lists wallpaper, font size, resolution, rotation, and screen timeout, along with keyboard, mouse, and touchpad settings. The controls shown can vary by tablet and software version.
