To run Restreamer continuously on an Ubuntu VPS, install Docker, launch Restreamer with persistent configuration and data volumes, secure its management and ingest endpoints, then connect a working input to YouTube Live using the current RTMPS URL and stream key. A container restart policy helps recover from some process or host restarts, but it cannot guarantee a 24/7 broadcast: the source, VPS, network, and YouTube ingest all need to remain healthy.
The basic path is your stream or media feed → Restreamer on the VPS → YouTube Live. Restreamer can receive and publish streams, but the right input setup depends on whether your feed comes from OBS, a camera, a file playlist, or another source.
What you need before installing Restreamer
- An Ubuntu VPS with a 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU and permission to run Docker. Restreamer’s official Linux installation guide lists Ubuntu as supported. Restreamer Linux installation documentation
- A source that can provide the video and audio feed you intend to publish. This guide does not assume a particular camera, playlist, or encoder workflow.
- Sustained outbound network capacity for the stream bitrate, plus headroom. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom; actual capacity depends on your VPS plan and network conditions. YouTube streaming tips
- CPU capacity if Restreamer must transcode, and storage and backups if you plan to record locally. The cited Restreamer guidance does not prescribe a universal VPS size.
When comparing VPS plans, check Docker support, sustained outbound transfer allowance, CPU capacity for your chosen workflow, storage and backup options, firewall controls, network region, and provider support. No particular provider or VPS plan is established as suitable for every stream.

Install Docker on Ubuntu
Use Docker’s current official Ubuntu installation instructions rather than an old package command copied from an unrelated guide. Package names and setup steps can change; follow the documentation for your Ubuntu release: Install Docker Engine on Ubuntu.

Launch the current Restreamer image
Restreamer’s official project example uses bind mounts for configuration and data, and the --restart=always policy. A documented example maps ports 8080 and 8181 for web access, 1935 and 1936 for RTMP-related use, and UDP 6000 for SRT. Verify the current image, command, and port requirements against the official Linux guide and repository before deploying; expose only ports your configuration actually needs. The persistent directories keep configuration and data outside the container, so replacing or restarting the container does not by itself erase those mounted files. Back them up. A restart policy can restart a container after certain failures or host restarts, but it is not an uptime guarantee and does not fix a failed source, inadequate bandwidth, or a YouTube-side interruption.

Secure the Restreamer interface and ingest
- Set a strong, unique administrative password. Restreamer’s quick-start guidance emphasizes using a secure password. Do not reuse a password from another service. Restreamer quick start
- Protect the web interface. If it is reachable over the public network, put it behind HTTPS and appropriate access controls. YouTube RTMPS secures the connection from your publisher to YouTube; it does not secure Restreamer’s administrative UI or an exposed ingest endpoint.
- Limit firewall access. Allow only the web and media traffic needed for your setup. Do not leave public RTMP ingest open without protection: Restreamer’s legacy RTMP-ingest guide warns that an exposed port can allow anyone to push streams to the server. The token example in that older guide may not match the release you run, so confirm the current version’s syntax before enabling it. Restreamer RTMP ingest guide
- Keep credentials private. Do not put stream keys in public repositories, screenshots, or logs. If a YouTube key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
Connect a source and publish to YouTube Live
- Configure the input in Restreamer. Connect the actual stream or feed you want to relay. The exact input settings depend on its source and format; check that Restreamer receives both video and audio before setting up publication.
- Get the current YouTube ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the stream URL and stream key for the event or stream you are configuring. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube encoder settings · Encrypt your stream using RTMPS · Manage live stream settings
- Create a YouTube publication service in Restreamer. Enter the RTMPS destination URL and stream key in the publication settings. Treat the key like a password; anyone who has it may be able to publish to your channel.
- Check the YouTube preview before relying on the stream. Confirm that the expected picture and sound arrive, and inspect YouTube’s stream health indicators. Test the complete route from input through Restreamer to YouTube before leaving it unattended.
Choose video and audio settings that fit the feed
Match the output to the source and the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends the following for a 1080p, 30 fps H.264 stream:

These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not proof that a particular VPS can encode or carry the stream. If you relay a feed without transcoding, confirm its existing codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes are compatible with YouTube’s requirements. Test recovery and monitor the live path
- Test the whole chain: verify the input, VPS egress, Restreamer publication, YouTube preview, audio, and stream health.
- Test a restart deliberately: confirm the container returns and the input and publication resume as expected. A container restart policy addresses container restarts; it cannot repair an upstream source outage, bad input, low bandwidth, host-resource exhaustion, or YouTube-side interruption.
- Back up configuration and protect secrets: preserve the mounted configuration and data, while ensuring backups and logs do not expose stream keys.
- Use external monitoring if unattended detection matters: a running container alone does not confirm that valid video is reaching YouTube.
Understand the 24/7 archive limitation
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that a continuous 24-hour stream will be archived in full, and it does not say that longer streams are never archived. If a complete recording matters, arrange an independently verified recording and segmentation plan, and check YouTube’s current guidance before depending on a 24/7 broadcast archive.
