Install a compatible Node.js version, add Puppeteer to your project, let it download its matching Chrome for Testing browser, then set fullPage: true when calling page.screenshot(). The examples below follow Puppeteer 25.12.0 documentation, which specifies Node.js 22.12 or later and supports Debian/Ubuntu on x64 and arm64 for Chrome for Testing. Check the linked live requirements before installing, because supported versions can change.
What you need before installing
- Node.js 22.12 or later: this is the requirement listed in Puppeteer 25.12.0 documentation.
- An Ubuntu machine using x64 or arm64: both architectures are listed among the supported Debian/Ubuntu platforms for Chrome for Testing.
- Enough disk space and download access: Puppeteer normally downloads Chrome for Testing and chrome-headless-shell. The project gives an approximate Linux Chrome for Testing download size of 282 MB; this is its estimate, not an independent measurement.
See Puppeteer’s system requirements for current compatibility details.
Install Puppeteer and its browser
- Open a terminal in your project directory, or create one with
mkdir puppeteer-shot && cd puppeteer-shot. - Initialize a Node project if it does not already have a
package.json:npm init -y. - Install Puppeteer:
npm install puppeteer.
The puppeteer package normally downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing binary and chrome-headless-shell as part of installation. Puppeteer documents that chrome-headless-shell has been included since v21.6.0. The installation guide also provides equivalents for Yarn, pnpm and Bun; package-manager settings that block install scripts can prevent the browser download.

npx puppeteer browsers install
Installation may complete while browser setup does not. If launching later reports that the executable is missing, run this command and try again.
Capture a full-page screenshot
Save the following as screenshot.mjs in the project directory. It uses ES modules, sets a predictable viewport, navigates to a page, writes a PNG, and closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails.

- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Run it with node screenshot.mjs. The file page.png will be written to the current directory. Puppeteer’s fullPage option defaults to false; setting it to true captures the page beyond the visible viewport. The screenshot guide demonstrates page.goto() with waitUntil: 'networkidle2', but that condition is only an example: network activity stopping does not guarantee that every site’s lazy-loaded images or dynamically rendered content is ready.
Choose a readiness condition that fits the page
For a simple page, networkidle2 can be a useful starting point. For a site that keeps connections open or fills content after navigation, wait for a meaningful selector or use an appropriate explicit delay before capture. A selector wait is generally more targeted than assuming that a quiet network means the page is complete.

Keep the output path and format explicit. The example writes PNG; Puppeteer’s screenshot API also supports other formats through its options. Consult the screenshot API for the options supported by the version installed in your project.
Ubuntu dependencies and browser launch failures
Chrome for Testing needs system libraries in addition to Node.js. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide lists common Debian/Ubuntu dependencies such as libnss3, libgtk-3-0, libgbm1, libasound2, libx11-xcb1, libxss1 and font packages. Treat that as a guide, not a timeless installation command: Ubuntu releases and Chromium dependencies change.

- Find the Chrome binary installed by Puppeteer. If you do not know its location, inspect the Puppeteer cache or use the browser-management commands documented by Puppeteer.
- Check unresolved shared libraries with
ldd /path/to/chrome | grep not, replacing the path with the actual Chrome executable. - Install the missing Ubuntu packages using the package names appropriate to your release, then retry the script.
- Compare the result with Puppeteer’s live troubleshooting guide and Chromium’s maintained dependency guidance linked there.
Ubuntu 23.10 and later: diagnose sandbox errors safely
On Ubuntu 23.10 and later, AppArmor configuration can prevent Chrome for Testing downloaded by Puppeteer from using user namespaces. A launch failure such as No usable sandbox! may therefore be a sandbox-policy issue rather than a missing Node package.
Use the diagnosis and environment-appropriate workaround described in Puppeteer’s troubleshooting page, which links to Chromium’s upstream AppArmor guidance. Do not make --no-sandbox the routine fix: Puppeteer strongly discourages running Chrome without its sandbox. The right remediation depends on the host’s security configuration.

Common errors and what to check
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Could not find Chrome or browser executable | An install script was blocked, or the browser download did not finish. | Run npx puppeteer browsers install from the project directory and confirm installation completes. |
| Shared library missing or browser exits during launch | A system dependency is absent on Ubuntu. | Run ldd /path/to/chrome | grep not and install the missing libraries using the current troubleshooting guidance. |
No usable sandbox! on Ubuntu 23.10 or later |
AppArmor may be restricting user namespaces used by Chrome for Testing. | Follow Puppeteer’s linked AppArmor diagnosis and Chromium’s upstream guidance; retain sandboxing where possible. |
| Chrome cannot create or use a profile | The user-data directory may not be writable. | Check permissions for the running user. Puppeteer uses a temporary profile by default; where needed, configure a writable userDataDir as described in the troubleshooting documentation. |
| Screenshot misses content or images | The page may render content after the chosen navigation condition or load images lazily. | Wait for a page-specific selector or otherwise allow the page’s required content to render before taking the screenshot. |
| Script hangs or times out at navigation | The page may keep network requests open, or the selected readiness condition may not match the site. | Choose a suitable readiness condition and wait for a concrete page state instead of relying on a generic network-idle assumption. |
When Docker is a better fit
Direct installation is the shortest route when you want Puppeteer running on Ubuntu itself. Docker can make the setup more repeatable across machines: Puppeteer’s official image bundles Chrome for Testing, its dependencies and a pre-installed Puppeteer version. Its documented sandbox setup requires the container to run with SYS_ADMIN, and Puppeteer recommends an init process. Those permissions and container conventions may be inconvenient in an existing workflow, so use Docker when reproducibility is worth the extra container setup.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is simply to get a screenshot from a URL, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request API instead of managing Chrome on Ubuntu. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does fullPage: true change the viewport size?
No. It captures beyond the visible viewport; the viewport settings still determine the page’s layout width and rendering.
Can Puppeteer take a screenshot of a specific element instead of the whole page?
Yes. Select the element with Puppeteer’s page locator or selector API and call screenshot() on the resulting element handle.
