To block mature-rated games, set an age-based content limit on the child’s own account: use Family Management on PlayStation or the child’s profile in Xbox Family Settings or Microsoft Family Safety. In the US, PlayStation describes ESRB M (Mature) games as potentially suitable for ages 17 and older; ratings and feature availability vary by region.

Before you change game restrictions

  • Use the child’s own account. Add it to your family group first. PlayStation requires an adult family manager to create or add a child account; Microsoft’s Xbox guidance likewise uses a family group and the child’s account. See PlayStation’s parental-control setup and Xbox family settings.
  • Set the child’s correct date of birth. The age-based filter relies on the account and the selected age limit.
  • Choose the rating system and age ceiling for your region. ESRB labels apply in the US; other regions may use different ratings and menu wording. PlayStation notes that family-feature conditions can vary by country or region (PlayStation ratings guidance).

Set mature-game restrictions on PlayStation 5

  1. Sign in with the adult account that manages the family. Create a family group and add the child as a family member if you have not done so already. PlayStation also recommends that the child complete email verification and sign in to their account.
  2. On PS5, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management. Select the child, then select the parental-control setting you want to change. Alternatively, sign in to Account Management on the web, open Family Management, select the child and choose Edit. Child-level controls are also available in the PS Family app. The steps and available features are described in PlayStation’s setup guide.
  3. Choose the child’s Age Level for Games or Games and Apps restriction and set an age appropriate to your family. You can adjust presets; changing individual values moves the restriction to Customize. The selected settings can cover PS5, PS4 and PS3 game and app age levels.
  4. To prevent a child from changing the limit or bypassing it with an unrestricted account, review the child’s ability to change parental controls and use guest or new accounts. PlayStation’s safety guidance for parents explains related account and safety controls.

Approve or deny a PlayStation game request

If a child tries to open a restricted PS5 game, they can request access from the blocked-game screen. The family manager and any appointed parent or guardian can review the notification in the PS Family app, Family Management on the web, or PS5 notifications and Allowed Games. Approving a request is a game-access exception; it does not replace reviewing other controls.

If a PlayStation change does not take effect

If the child is already playing when you change a control, PlayStation advises that they sign out and back in for the change to take effect.

Set mature-game restrictions on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S

  1. Sign in with an adult Microsoft family organizer account and add the child’s Microsoft/Xbox account to the family group.
  2. Open Xbox Family Settings or Microsoft Family Safety and select the child or family member. Choose the Xbox platform and configure the content filter or age limit. Microsoft describes the filter as limiting apps and games to content appropriate for the selected age; its app and game filter guidance covers the age-filter feature.
  3. Use the app or web family controls to manage the setting. Microsoft’s Xbox family guidance identifies Xbox Family Settings and account.microsoft.com/family as ways to manage a child’s limits. On-console menu wording can vary; follow the current prompts on your console rather than relying on a single assumed menu path.

Xbox Wire’s 2020 explanation gives an example of the age-filter concept: an eight-year-old set to access E-rated games would be blocked from titles intended for more mature players. Treat that as an illustration, not a current menu instruction or a universal age policy (Xbox Wire, December 10, 2020).

Optional: set Xbox playtime limits separately

Age restrictions and time limits are different controls. To set time limits in Microsoft Family Safety, choose the family member and Xbox platform, then open Set time limits > Apps, features, and games. Turn limits on, select a game, and configure daily time and allowed hours. See Microsoft’s instructions for setting app and game limits.

What an age limit controls—and what it does not

In US ESRB guidance, M (Mature) means a game may be suitable for people ages 17 and older, according to PlayStation. It is a rating-category indication, not a guarantee that every M-rated game is right for every 17-year-old. Choose the regional rating shown for a title and set the child’s age ceiling below the games you want blocked.

Game-age restrictions are not a substitute for communication, privacy, spending or playtime settings. PlayStation lists these as distinct controls; review communication and user-generated-content settings separately, and check linked third-party apps or services for their own controls. The PlayStation control guide and parent safety guide describe those separate areas. Xbox family settings likewise provide controls beyond content filtering; see Xbox family settings.
