To set up a scene transition in OBS, choose Fade or Cut in the Scene Transitions controls, set its duration, and test the change before going live. For a 24/7 chillhop stream, remember that a scene transition changes the picture—not the music. Set up media looping separately, check your music rights, and do not rely on YouTube to archive a stream that runs beyond 12 hours.
Set up a scene transition in OBS
An OBS scene is a layout of sources, such as artwork, text, and media. A simple radio stream can use one stable scene; add more only if you need distinct views, such as a holding screen or a now-playing layout. The OBS Studio Overview Guide documents Fade and Cut as available from first launch, with other transition types available through the Scene Transitions controls (OBS Studio Overview Guide).
- Create the scene or scenes you need. In the Scenes panel, add a scene for your main radio layout. Add another only if you have a reason to switch views.
- Add and arrange sources. Put your artwork, title text, and any other visuals in the scene. OBS sources can include images, text, and audio or video inputs.
- Choose the transition. In Scene Transitions, select Fade for a gradual visual change or Cut for an immediate one. To use another available transition, use the add control in that area and select it.
- Set the duration. Adjust the duration in the Scene Transitions controls. OBS does not prescribe a best duration for chillhop; choose one that suits the artwork and pace of your stream, then preview it.
- Test before broadcasting. Switch between the scenes and check that the transition looks as intended. OBS recommends testing settings and scenes before a first stream (OBS Quick Start Guide).
Use Studio Mode to prepare a scene change
Studio Mode separates the scene being prepared in preview from the scene currently sent to the live output. Select or edit the next scene in preview, inspect it, then press Transition when you are ready to send it live. Quick Transitions can be configured with their own durations and used for manual changes in Studio Mode (OBS Studio Overview Guide).
This is a manual production aid, not an automatic schedule. It lets you stage a change before viewers see it, but it will not rotate scenes on a timer by itself.

Loop the music or video separately
A scene transition changes what viewers see; do not assume it will crossfade or otherwise transition the music. Audio changes are a separate playback or audio-routing task, and the OBS scene-transition guidance does not establish an audio crossfade method.
Repeat one file with Media Source
For one local audio or video file, add a Media Source and enable its Loop setting so playback restarts at the end. Check the source during testing to confirm it repeats as intended.

Repeat a playlist with VLC Video
For a playlist, OBS documents the VLC Video source and its Loop Playlist option. VLC must be installed; the OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. The documented defaults are Loop Playlist on, Shuffle Playlist off, and stop when not visible / restart when visible for visibility behavior (OBS Media Sources).
If your media source is on a scene that becomes hidden during a transition, check its visibility behavior in the actual layout. A source that stops while hidden may not behave as you expect when that scene returns. Turn shuffle on only if randomized track order is wanted.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live and test the output
- Get the stream details in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to select a YouTube connection in the encoder when available. Otherwise, copy the stream URL and key from YouTube and enter them in the encoder’s stream settings.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it as a credential: anyone who obtains it could send a broadcast to your stream.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm the picture, audio, looping, and scene transitions in Live Control Room before going live.
- Go live only after checking the complete setup. Verify the intended scene is on screen and the media source is playing. YouTube’s setup guidance describes confirming the preview before starting the live broadcast (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
Plan for long-stream archives and DVR limits
Do not promise viewers that YouTube will save a complete recording of a 24/7 broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends keeping a local archive backup, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all (Archive live streams). YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; this is a platform caveat, not a guaranteed cutoff for every stream or device (Turn on DVR on live streams).
Decide whether uninterrupted viewer access or manageable recording segments matter more to your channel. If you plan restarts to create shorter segments, check how each restart affects the stream page, viewers, and recordings; YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe one restart schedule for a 24/7 radio channel. Keep a local recording if a complete archive is important.

Confirm music rights before streaming
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for necessary rights on the creator, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses), and other royalty participants. Confirm that your permissions cover the planned live use, archive, territories, and monetization, as applicable (Livestream terms and conditions).
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies content, it may replace the live output with a placeholder and warn you; if the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Even licensed music can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Confirm any required allowlisting directly with the rights owner (Copyright issues with live streams).

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The scene switches instantly. Check whether Cut is selected instead of Fade. Select Fade and adjust its duration if you want a gradual visual change.
- The prepared scene is not live. In Studio Mode, preview is separate from live output. Inspect the preview, then press Transition when ready.
- A playlist does not loop. Check that you are using VLC Video, that VLC is installed, and that Loop Playlist is enabled. For 64-bit OBS, the OBS documentation calls for 64-bit VLC.
- Media stops after a scene change. Check the source’s visibility behavior. VLC Video’s documented behavior includes stopping when not visible and restarting when visible; verify that this suits your scene layout.
- The live output is replaced or interrupted. YouTube may have detected third-party content. Review the rights for the music and confirm any required Content ID allowlisting with the rights owner.
- The full broadcast is missing from archives or cannot be rewound fully. YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as archives and that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Keep a local archive when a complete recording matters.
