To stream a church sermon from OBS to YouTube, connect the camera and sound-board audio to a Windows PC, enter the event’s YouTube stream details in OBS, and choose video settings your measured upload connection and computer can sustain. Test the complete stream before relying on it. A PC-based setup is not guaranteed to stay live through power, internet, or hardware failures—and a YouTube stream that runs longer than 12 hours may not be saved as a replay.

What you need before setting up OBS

OBS Studio sends a live camera-and-audio production from your PC to YouTube. The computer, camera or capture device, sound input, power, and internet connection all need to keep working for the stream to continue.

  • A Windows PC that can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate. OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as basic requirements, but meeting them does not guarantee that a particular scene and output setting will run smoothly.
  • A camera that the PC can receive as a webcam or through a capture card, plus a suitable audio feed from the church mixer or a microphone.
  • A church YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to Google’s YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026.
  • A stable internet connection at the church. Test sustained upload at the venue; an advertised plan speed is not a measurement of the bandwidth available to OBS during a service.
  • Enough free disk space if you plan to record a local copy.

Download OBS Studio from the OBS Project’s official site. On first launch, run the Auto-Configuration Wizard and use its result as a starting profile, not proof that the PC can stream reliably. Actual performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

How to connect the church camera and sound to OBS

Create a simple scene

  1. In OBS, create a scene for the sermon. Keep the first version simple: a camera shot and any essential church name or sermon-title graphic.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + → Video Capture Device. Choose the camera or capture-card input and confirm that the picture appears in the preview. Device names and available controls depend on the connected hardware.
  3. Add the sound-board feed or microphone as an audio input source. Use an appropriate output from the mixer and a compatible PC input or audio interface. Do not assume a mixer output can be plugged directly into any computer socket; check the equipment’s input and output connections.
  4. Speak into the microphone and watch the Audio Mixer meters in OBS. Confirm that the sermon audio is present and not clipping, then listen to a short test recording or private/unlisted test stream on another device.

YouTube describes external cameras, microphones, and mixers as common encoder-production equipment, and OBS supports webcam and capture-card sources. If the church’s existing camera and mixer provide usable signals, additional gear may not be needed.

What OBS settings should you use for a sermon stream?

Start with 30 frames per second for a mostly static pulpit camera. Sixty frames per second increases the encoding and upload demands and usually adds little for spoken-word video. Choose 720p or 1080p based on the camera feed, text readability, PC performance, and the upload you measure at the church.

Use YouTube’s H.264 recommendations as a starting point

Output YouTube recommended H.264 video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

These are Google/YouTube Help recommendations accessed in 2026, not guarantees that a specific church connection can sustain the rate. YouTube advises leaving about 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate. If other church users share the connection, their traffic can reduce the capacity OBS actually gets. For example, a 5 Mbps stream calls for about 6 Mbps of available upload when applying that headroom guidance; verify the connection remains stable at service time.

Set the encoder output in OBS

  1. Open Settings → Output. If necessary, change Output Mode to Advanced to expose the streaming encoder controls.
  2. For the straightforward published YouTube route, choose H.264 video encoding and AAC audio. The available encoder choices depend on the PC. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload on compatible systems, but test its performance and picture quality rather than assuming a particular encoder is best.
  3. Set rate control to CBR and enter a bitrate appropriate to the chosen resolution and measured upload. Reduce it if OBS reports network-related dropped frames.
  4. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  5. Use stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz as YouTube’s advanced recommendations. For SDR video, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 color.
  6. Open Settings → Video and set the output resolution and frame rate you intend to use. Keep the scene uncomplicated; unnecessary animated or GPU-heavy effects add load without improving a sermon shot.

YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, and AAC or MP3 audio. H.264 with AAC is a simple starting choice for this OBS workflow. YouTube transcodes incoming streams for viewing formats.

How to connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. In the Stream tab, create a new event or reuse prior settings, then follow the current event workflow.
  2. Copy the event’s server URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube if it is available, or enter the supplied server URL and key in the provided fields.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not show it in a desktop capture, share it publicly, or include it in a recording.
  4. Apply the settings, start streaming in OBS, and wait for the Live Control Room preview and stream-health status. Follow the event’s current YouTube go-live flow; confirmation steps can differ with the workflow.
  5. Check the public watch page from another device, including a phone, and confirm that both picture and sound play. A working OBS preview alone does not prove the public stream is correct.

How to keep the stream stable during a service

Internet connection and dropped frames

Use Ethernet between the PC and router when practical; OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable. Test upload at the church and leave the recommended headroom. OBS notes that network-related dropped frames usually indicate an unstable connection or insufficient available upload for the selected bitrate, often outside OBS itself.

  • Check the Ethernet cable, router, network adapter and drivers, and whether other users or devices are consuming bandwidth.
  • If the connection remains unstable, discuss the line and local network with the ISP or the church’s network administrator.

PC load and encoder problems

If the picture stutters while the network is stable, the PC may be overloaded. Simplify the scene, remove unnecessary effects, close resource-heavy programs, or lower the output demands. OBS troubleshooting guidance identifies GPU overload as a cause of rendering or encoding problems. Try a compatible hardware encoder if available, then test the result before using it for a service.

Power interruptions

A UPS or suitable inverter/battery arrangement may keep equipment running through a mains interruption, but its useful runtime depends on the combined load and the outage. Consider the PC, router, and modem or other network equipment together: backing up only the PC will not help if the network devices lose power. Measure or obtain the equipment load and decide how many minutes of backup are needed before selecting a system. A UPS is not an internet backup.

Monitoring and backup recording

Arrange for someone to watch the public stream and OBS/YouTube stream health during the service. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover when a backup encoder is available; a small church without one can still monitor the stream and record locally. OBS’s Quick Start Guide encourages a test lasting a few minutes before the first real stream.

Will YouTube save a nonstop stream as one replay?

Not necessarily. Google’s YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026 says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends making a local archive.

If having a complete replay matters, record locally and check that the recording is actually being written to disk. Keep an eye on free storage. You can also plan separate events or stream segments shorter than 12 hours if that suits how viewers will find each service. A continuous encoder session does not guarantee one complete YouTube archive.

How to test the whole setup before the service

  1. Run a private or unlisted test using the intended camera, mixer feed, scene, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
  2. Watch OBS’s preview, Audio Mixer meters, and YouTube’s stream-health status. Look and listen for missing sound, clipping, stutter, or dropped frames.
  3. Open the watch page on another device and test mobile playback over a separate connection if possible.
  4. Test local recording if you need an archive, and verify the resulting file plays with sound and picture.
  5. Run the test long enough to observe the actual network and PC behavior under the setup you plan to use. Change one setting at a time, then test again.

Common OBS-to-YouTube problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
YouTube does not show a signal Incorrect server URL or stream key, the wrong event, or the OBS stream has not started. Recheck the event in Live Control Room and copy its current server URL and key into OBS. Keep the key private.
OBS preview has no camera image Wrong capture device, disconnected camera, or capture-card input issue. Check the Video Capture Device source selection and cable/input path, then confirm the camera is producing a signal.
Viewers cannot hear the sermon Wrong audio source or mixer output, muted input, or a signal not reaching OBS. Watch the Audio Mixer meters while someone speaks; check the selected input and mixer output, then listen to a test recording or stream.
Audio is distorted or clipping Input level is too high or the mixer signal is unsuitable for the PC input. Lower the level at the appropriate stage and make another listening test. Avoid relying only on meter movement.
Network dropped frames or stream interruptions Unstable connection or insufficient upload for the configured bitrate. Use Ethernet, reduce bitrate, check concurrent network use and local network equipment, and retest at the church.
Video stutters while connection appears stable Encoding or rendering load is too high for the PC or scene. Simplify the scene, close demanding applications, lower resolution or frame rate, and test a compatible encoder.
Stream works, but no complete YouTube replay appears The stream ran longer than YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold or local recording was not enabled. For an archive, record locally and verify the recording; consider shorter stream segments if appropriate.
