To set up Slack notifications, open Preferences > Notifications from your profile menu on desktop, or tap your profile picture and choose Notifications on mobile. Turn on the delivery methods you want, then choose whether to be notified about everything or mainly mentions and direct messages. You can fine-tune alerts by conversation, keyword, and schedule.
Open Slack’s notification settings
On desktop
- Click your profile picture.
- Select Preferences, then Notifications.
- Choose whether Slack can send desktop and mobile notifications, as appropriate for the devices you use. See Slack’s notification configuration guide for platform-specific controls.
On mobile
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Notifications.
- Enable mobile notifications and select the notification scope you want.
Choose which Slack activity triggers alerts
In the notification preferences, choose the scope that fits how closely you need to follow workspace activity:

- Everything: the broader option for message notifications.
- Mentions and direct messages: a narrower default that focuses on messages directed to you. You can add exceptions for specific channels or direct messages.
Slack’s conversation-specific notification settings let you adjust individual channels and group direct messages. Use exceptions when you want a quieter default but still need alerts from particular conversations.
Add keyword notifications for channels
Keywords can alert you when a message in a channel you’ve joined contains a term you want to watch. Set them in Slack’s notification preferences under keyword notifications. Matching is not case-sensitive, but Slack requires an exact match; a related word or variation may not trigger an alert. A keyword in a thread you are not following will not send a notification. Set a notification schedule
If you want Slack to pause alerts during particular hours, set a notification schedule. Slack supports daily, weekday, or custom day-and-time schedules; notifications are paused outside the hours you select. To configure it, open your notification preferences and find the notification schedule controls. See Pause your Slack notifications for the available schedule options.

Slack offers additional controls for when mobile notifications are delivered and how alerts appear, including sound, message previews, and badges. The specific controls depend on your platform. Review the desktop or mobile section of Configure your Slack notifications and make sure the choices suit the way you use each device.
Troubleshoot notifications that are missing or delayed
- Check whether notifications are paused. A paused status or schedule can prevent alerts from arriving when expected.
- Check Slack’s preferences. Confirm notifications are enabled on the relevant device and that the selected scope includes the activity you expected to hear about.
- Check your device’s system settings. The operating system’s notification permissions and sound settings also affect delivery.
- Run the mobile diagnostic if needed. In the Slack mobile app, use Troubleshoot Notifications. If the problem persists, Slack advises sending a report through that diagnostic flow.
