To publish a live source through Wowza Streaming Engine (WSE), configure a live application and its playback types in Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, connect a compatible camera or encoder, then verify the incoming stream is active and test playback. Manager is the browser interface for an Engine instance; Wowza Video’s Stream Health Monitor is a separate product feature and should not be mistaken for an Engine Manager screen.

What you need before you begin

  • A running Wowza Streaming Engine instance. The documented default Manager address is http://[wowza-ip-address]:8088/enginemanager; replace the bracketed placeholder with your server’s IP address. Use a modern browser, and do not share the address alongside server credentials.
  • A compatible live source: an existing camera or encoder is sufficient if it can publish using a protocol and settings supported by your WSE configuration. You do not automatically need to buy another live streaming video encoder.
  • Network access from the source to the streaming host. Wowza documents TCP port 1935 as the default streaming host port; it can be changed in Virtual Host Setup, so check the actual port configured for your deployment.
  • A plan for how viewers will play the stream, including the playback protocols and any playback-security restrictions the audience requires.

Wowza Manager integrates with some common encoders. Other compatible sources may require you to enter the connection details manually. Check the source’s protocol support and your deployment configuration rather than assuming a particular device model will work.

How do I prepare a live application?

  1. Sign in to Wowza Streaming Engine Manager for the running instance.
  2. Create a live application, or open the live application you intend to use.
  3. On the application’s Setup page, select the playback types required by your viewers. Wowza documents these settings as enabling source transmuxing for formats including MPEG-DASH, HLS, RTMP, and RTSP/RTP. Select only the types relevant to your delivery needs.
  4. Configure Playback Security for the intended audience. Restrictions depend on your distribution requirements; “No client restrictions” is an available choice, not a safe default for every stream.
  5. If you change playback-security settings, restart the application as directed by the documented workflow before testing the updated configuration.

How do I connect an encoder or camera?

  1. In Manager, open the live application and locate its connection details. Note the server address, streaming host port, application name, and stream name required by your source.
  2. In the encoder or camera’s publishing settings, enter the server address and port, application name, and stream name. The exact labels and layout vary by device; use the source’s instructions if they differ.
  3. For RTMP- and RTSP-based sources, the documented workflow requires source username and password by default when source authentication is enabled. Enter the source credentials configured for the application. They are case-sensitive; Wowza documents alphanumeric characters, periods, underscores, and hyphens as allowed characters.
  4. Confirm the protocol selected on the source matches the configured WSE workflow, then start publishing.

Do not assume the RTMP/RTSP source-credential workflow applies identically to every protocol. The source and application configuration determine the connection method.

How can I tell if my live stream is active?

  1. In Manager, open the live application and select Incoming Streams.
  2. Find your stream and confirm its status is Active. If it is absent or inactive, troubleshoot the source connection before investigating viewer playback.
  3. Open the stream entry to inspect its uptime, network throughput, and other published-stream information.
  4. Select Test Playback and choose a playback URL that matches a protocol enabled for the application. Use a secure URL only if SSL/TLS streaming is configured.
  5. Test the URL in a suitable player or browser. A source showing Active confirms ingestion; successful playback separately checks the viewer path.

Where do I monitor connections and server load?

Choose the monitoring view that corresponds to the question you are trying to answer. Manager separates server and virtual-host controls from application-level monitoring.

Can I manage WSE without the browser interface?

Wowza identifies three management routes: Manager, direct XML configuration, and the REST API. A practical way to choose is by task rather than treating one as universally best.

Route Practical fit
Manager Visual, one-off configuration and monitoring of an Engine instance.
REST API Programmatic management or integration into repeatable workflows. The cited live-source API guide requires Engine 4.3.0 or later; verify compatibility with the version actually deployed before relying on its examples.
XML configuration Direct file-level customization where that approach fits your administration process.

Configuration options and API compatibility can vary by Engine version. Confirm the documentation for your installed version before applying examples to a production server.

Is Wowza Video’s Stream Health Monitor the same as Engine monitoring?

No. Wowza Video has a Live Stream Details page with a Stream Health tab that reports inbound bitrate, frame rate at the transcoder, and keyframe interval. Wowza’s documentation says its selectable session history covers the previous 90 days. Those are Wowza Video details, not evidence that the same metrics or controls appear in Wowza Streaming Engine Manager.

Troubleshooting common publishing problems

Symptom Likely check What to do
The stream does not appear in Incoming Streams. Source address, port, application name, stream name, protocol, and whether the source has started publishing. Compare each encoder field with the connection details for the live application. Confirm the source uses the configured streaming host port; Wowza’s documented default is TCP 1935, but the VHost may use another port.
An RTMP or RTSP source cannot authenticate. Whether source authentication is enabled and whether the entered credentials match. Re-enter the configured source username and password, paying attention to case. Check for unsupported characters; the documented allowed set is alphanumeric, period, underscore, and hyphen.
The incoming stream is Active, but the viewer test fails. Whether the requested playback type is enabled, the URL uses the right protocol, playback security allows the test client, and SSL/TLS is configured if using a secure URL. Choose a Test Playback URL for an enabled protocol, verify the security configuration, and test with an appropriate player. Treat ingestion and viewer playback as separate checks.
Settings changes have not taken effect. Whether the change was made to the intended application and whether the documented workflow requires an application restart. For playback-security changes, restart the application as required, then run the playback test again.
It is unclear whether the issue is source-specific or server-wide. Compare the individual stream view with application, virtual-host, and server monitoring. Use the narrowest relevant view first, then expand to broader scopes if connections, throughput, uptime, or resource consumption indicate a wider problem.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a prerecorded YouTube channel that stays live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different kind of service from WSE: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed or stream to platforms other than YouTube.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: your computer and home connection can be off while the cloud stream runs.
  • Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.

Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for the service details, or start the free day.
