Normalize audio before it reaches the live encoder: measure representative tracks with a loudness-aware meter, apply a processor that can run continuously, set a true-peak ceiling, and listen through quiet, loud, and changing material. FFmpeg’s loudnorm filter supports single-pass processing for livestreams and a two-pass workflow for files. There is no verified numeric loudness target for YouTube continuous live streams in the sources cited here, so treat broadcast standards as references—not YouTube rules.
Choose where normalization happens
The right place is in the audio chain before the final live encoder. That lets you control loudness and peaks before the signal is encoded and sent to YouTube.
For a fixed music library
If your playlist files are stable, measure and prepare them offline. FFmpeg documents a two-pass workflow for files; this can make track levels more consistent before the live session and reduce the processing burden during broadcast. Recheck transitions after preparation: per-file measurements alone do not tell you whether adjacent tracks sound balanced together.

If tracks are added or changed while the stream is running, use a processor that supports continuous, real-time operation. FFmpeg documents loudnorm single-pass operation for livestreams. The filter exposes targets for integrated loudness, loudness range, and maximum true peak; consult its documentation for the exact options and syntax: FFmpeg loudnorm filter documentation.

Choose a target without mistaking it for a YouTube requirement
EBU R 128 version 5.0, published by the European Broadcasting Union on 21 November 2023, recommends average programme loudness of −23 LUFS. Its streaming guidance, EBU R 128 S2 version 3 (November 2023), describes −23 LUFS as the baseline level for programmes streamed unchanged. These are broadcast references, not verified YouTube live-stream requirements.
EBU R 128 S2 also discusses a conditional case: when metadata is not used to manage device gain and content dynamics, and the broadcaster wants to control dynamic treatment before distribution, interim distribution loudness may be raised into the −20 to −16 LUFS range. That is context-specific guidance, not a universal target. See the EBU’s EBU R 128 and EBU R 128 S2.

The cited sources do not establish whether YouTube currently normalizes or limits audio on continuous live streams, or whether it publishes a numeric live-stream target. In particular, do not treat the often-repeated −14 LUFS figure as an established rule for this use. Choose a deliberate operating target, identify the standard or goal informing it, and verify the result in your own encoded output.

Set loudness, dynamics, and peak headroom
Integrated loudness is not peak level
LUFS describes perceived programme loudness over time; true peak estimates the highest reconstructed signal peak. A stream can meet a loudness target and still have peaks that are too high. FFmpeg’s loudnorm lets you specify integrated loudness, loudness range, and maximum true-peak targets separately. Pick a true-peak ceiling that leaves suitable headroom for your encoding chain; the cited sources do not establish a YouTube-mandated ceiling.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Preserve the character of the music
Loudness control should make listening levels more consistent, not flatten every track into the same sound. Listen to the quietest and loudest tracks, and to transitions between contrasting material. EBU’s streaming guidance recognizes that programme loudness, playback conditions, and dynamic treatment are related; the appropriate balance depends on the programming and the listening experience you intend.
Set up and verify the stream in order
- Decide between file preparation and live processing. Use a file-based two-pass workflow when the library is stable; use a continuous processor such as FFmpeg
loudnormsingle-pass when the playlist changes during broadcast. - Choose and record an operating target. If using EBU guidance, state whether you are following the −23 LUFS baseline or a context-specific distribution choice. Do not label either value a YouTube requirement.
- Configure the processor’s separate controls. Set the integrated loudness target, loudness-range target, and maximum true-peak target deliberately. Do not assume a loudness setting also guarantees peak safety.
- Measure representative material. Include quiet and loud tracks, different styles, and tracks likely to sit next to one another. A proper loudness-aware analyzer is needed for integrated LUFS and true-peak checks.
- Listen to the processed output. Check whether level changes feel abrupt, dynamics sound unnecessarily compressed, or playlist transitions are uneven. Adjust processing rather than simply raising the target.
- Check the signal after the final encoder. Measure and listen to the encoded output, not only the signal before encoding. Record observed integrated loudness and peaks, then revise settings if transitions are uneven or peaks approach clipping.
Use the right meter
OBS’s standard mixer display is not an integrated LUFS meter. OBS documents its mixer meter as a sample-peak programme meter; its VU display measures RMS over 300 ms. Those displays are useful for monitoring signal activity, but they do not establish integrated programme loudness. OBS also warns that output must remain below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping. See OBS audio mixer guidance.

Use a loudness-aware software analyzer or meter for integrated loudness and true-peak measurement. The EBU publishes a loudness-metering specification, but a dedicated hardware meter is optional rather than a requirement for this workflow: EBU loudness-metering specification.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The stream sounds uneven even though the meter looks active. OBS’s mixer bars do not report integrated LUFS. Measure with a loudness-aware analyzer and compare representative tracks and transitions.
- Some peaks clip after processing or encoding. Loudness and true peak are separate checks. Lower the processor’s maximum true-peak target or adjust the chain, then inspect the encoded output; OBS identifies output above 0 dBFS as clipping.
- Music sounds unnaturally flattened. Revisit loudness-range and peak-management choices and listen across the loudest and quietest material. Raising loudness is not a substitute for managing dynamics thoughtfully.
- The chosen LUFS value is being treated as a platform rule. EBU values are broadcast guidance. The cited sources do not verify a current YouTube continuous-live target or numeric normalization policy.
- Pre-encoder measurements look right but the stream does not. Validate after final encoding and check transitions in that output; pre-encoder readings alone do not show the complete delivered signal.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the 24/7 YouTube stream to continue without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded recordings or playlists from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera feed.
