To set up an external OLED gaming monitor for HDR, select that monitor in Windows 11, enable HDR, then run the Windows HDR Calibration app full screen on the same display. Follow its test patterns rather than copying brightness or color values from another monitor; available HDR modes and on-screen controls vary by model.

1. Select the monitor and turn on HDR in Windows

  1. Connect and power on the OLED monitor.
  2. Open Settings > System > Display. If you use more than one screen, select the OLED monitor in the display layout.
  3. Open the selected display’s HDR settings and turn on HDR. Check the capability indicators Windows shows for that display; the OLED label alone does not establish what the current connection reports. See Microsoft’s HDR settings in Windows and overview of HDR in Windows.

Microsoft’s separate “Display calibration for HDR video” feature is for built-in displays. For an external HDR-capable monitor, use the Windows HDR Calibration app instead.

2. Check the monitor’s own HDR mode

Use the monitor’s manual to identify its HDR mode and any image-processing options. Windows notes that post-processing effects enabled by default can interfere with the calibration app; if the manual identifies relevant effects, consider disabling them through the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) while calibrating. OSD names and controls differ by model, so there is no universal HDR preset, tone-mapping choice, or brightness value to recommend.

For example, LG provides a model-specific owner’s manual and support information on its 27GS95QE-B product support page. Use the documentation for your own monitor, and avoid changing hidden service-menu controls or importing another panel’s settings.

3. Run Windows HDR Calibration

Check compatibility

Microsoft lists Windows 11, an HDR-capable display with HDR enabled, and full-screen app mode as requirements. The app’s saturation feature requires supported graphics hardware: AMD RX 400 series or later (or a Ryzen processor with Radeon Graphics); Intel 11th Gen integrated graphics or later, or DG1 discrete graphics or later; or NVIDIA GTX 10xx or later. Microsoft also lists WDDM 2.7 or later. If the app is missing a feature or does not behave as expected, check Windows Update or your GPU maker’s driver updates. See Microsoft’s Windows HDR Calibration instructions for current requirements.

Use the test patterns

  1. Install Windows HDR Calibration from Microsoft Store, then launch it full screen on the OLED monitor you selected.
  2. Work through the app’s three test patterns. Move each slider until the pattern is no longer visible, as instructed by the app. The patterns guide adjustments for darkest visible detail, brightest visible detail, and maximum display brightness.
  3. Adjust the final SDR and HDR saturation controls only if needed. Start near the default and make small changes; Microsoft cautions that excessive saturation can look unnatural, and the effect may be subtle or vary by display.

These pattern results depend on the selected monitor and its current mode. They are not preset values to copy from another OLED, and the app is a software calibration aid—not a substitute for professional instrument-based calibration. Microsoft says HDR-certified displays typically work well out of the box, though calibration remains available.

4. Save and check the result

The app creates a color profile. Run the app under the lighting conditions in which you normally use the monitor.

As a practical check, view familiar HDR content or a game that supports HDR and confirm the image looks plausible. If multiple displays are connected, verify that the app ran on the intended monitor. This is a visual check, not an official certification procedure.

5. Decide whether Auto HDR is useful

Auto HDR is optional and separate from calibration. In Windows 11, its setting is available in the selected display’s HDR settings. It can increase color range and brightness for supported older games that do not provide native HDR; a game with its own HDR mode uses a different implementation. Compare the result in games you play rather than assuming Auto HDR is always preferable. See Microsoft’s guide to using Auto HDR.

Which calibration tool should you use?

Display or feature What to use
External HDR-capable OLED monitor Windows HDR Calibration app, with HDR enabled for that monitor
Built-in HDR display Windows “Display calibration for HDR video” feature, which Microsoft describes as limited to built-in displays
Supported older game without native HDR Optionally try Auto HDR; it is a gaming feature, not a display calibration tool
Game with native HDR Use the game’s HDR implementation and assess its result separately from Windows calibration

The Windows HDR Calibration app workflow described here is for Windows 11. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the cited app guidance does not establish this same workflow for Windows 10.
