You can send a prerecorded Hindi sermon to YouTube Live from Ubuntu with FFmpeg by creating a YouTube live stream, then running FFmpeg with real-time input pacing and an RTMP or RTMPS destination. The recording plays at normal speed; YouTube receives it as a live broadcast. Install FFmpeg, check the file’s audio and video, use a stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, and verify the incoming preview and stream health before the service.

What you need before you start

  • An Ubuntu computer with FFmpeg installed and a connection capable of sustaining the chosen video bitrate plus audio and network overhead.
  • A sermon recording with clear, synchronized Hindi audio and video. Check that the file contains the expected audio and video streams before choosing output settings.
  • A YouTube channel with access to create a live stream, and its ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
  • Time to test the broadcast before the service. A running FFmpeg process alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving healthy audio and video.

There is no special Hindi-specific FFmpeg setting in the YouTube ingest guidance. Choose settings based on the source recording and YouTube’s supported codec, frame-rate and bitrate guidance; check that spoken Hindi is intelligible and synchronized.

Install FFmpeg on Ubuntu

Ubuntu provides FFmpeg through its package archive. Package versions depend on the Ubuntu release and updates: for example, the Ubuntu Jammy (22.04) package listing reviewed in 2026 shows version 4.4.2-0ubuntu0.22.04.1, which is not a claim about the latest FFmpeg version overall. See the Ubuntu Jammy FFmpeg package listing for that release.

  1. Update the package index and install FFmpeg:
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install ffmpeg
  2. Check the installed build and look for the encoders used in the example below:
    ffmpeg -version
    ffmpeg -encoders | grep -E 'libx264| aac'

If the encoder search does not list libx264 or AAC, the sample command may not work as written with that build. Check the output of ffmpeg -encoders and the installed build’s available encoder options.

Create a YouTube Live stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream for the sermon. Use the channel’s available test workflow or a private/unlisted event if you do not want the test to be publicly visible.
  2. Copy the stream’s ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP; use the RTMPS endpoint when your FFmpeg build supports it. Follow the current endpoint options shown for your stream in YouTube. See YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance.
  3. Treat the stream key as a credential. Do not publish it in a public script, screenshot, or shell-history example. Replace the placeholders in the command with the endpoint and key shown in your account; do not include the angle brackets.

YouTube’s encoder guidance currently lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for video, AAC or MP3 for audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds). Its H.264 bitrate table gives these examples:

H.264 output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s listed ingest figures, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection can sustain them. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the codec, resolution and frame rate you intend to send. The example command uses 5 Mbps for H.264 1080p30; do not carry that value over to a different output mode without checking the table.

Inspect the sermon recording

ffprobe -hide_banner -i "sermon.mp4"

Confirm that the file has the expected video and audio, then note its resolution, frame rate and codecs. Listen to representative sections for intelligibility and synchronization. This inspection is important because the command below transcodes to H.264 and AAC; settings should fit the source and the intended YouTube output rather than being assumed suitable for every recording.

Send the recording to YouTube with FFmpeg

This is a command template, not a tested configuration for every Ubuntu release, FFmpeg build, recording or YouTube account. It targets H.264 1080p30 with AAC audio. Change the input filename, output bitrate and frame rate to match the recording and the applicable YouTube settings. For RTMPS, use the RTMPS ingest URL YouTube provides for the stream if the installed FFmpeg build supports it.

ffmpeg -re -i "sermon.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "<YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"

Replace sermon.mp4 with the recording’s path and the final quoted destination with the ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room. The angle-bracket text is illustrative only; do not paste it unchanged. Keep the real key out of anything you share publicly.

  • -re reads the file at its native playback pace rather than sending it as fast as the computer can process it. This is essential for a prerecorded file being delivered as a live feed.
  • -i specifies the input file. The libx264 and aac options encode video and audio, while -pix_fmt yuv420p and the FLV muxer provide a conventional RTMP publishing pattern.
  • -r 30 sets the example output to 30 frames per second. -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds at 30 fps. At 60 fps, a 120-frame GOP corresponds to two seconds.
  • -b:v sets the example video bitrate; -maxrate and -bufsize set rate-control limits. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), but actual rate-control behavior depends on the encoder and FFmpeg build. Check the installed encoder’s help if strict CBR behavior is required.
  • -b:a 128k -ar 44100 sets the example AAC audio to 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Check YouTube’s current advanced audio settings and adjust for the stream plan.
  • -f flv selects the muxer used in FFmpeg’s documented RTMP publishing example. Use the current YouTube RTMPS ingest URL when the installed build supports it.

FFmpeg documents real-time input pacing and an RTMP/FLV publishing pattern in its command-line documentation; Ubuntu also provides an FFmpeg manpage for Jammy. YouTube’s recommended RTMPS transport and stream-key workflow are described in its live streaming help.

Transcode or copy the existing streams?

The example transcodes to H.264 and AAC, giving you control over output compatibility and bitrate at the cost of CPU usage. If the recording already has suitable streams, -c copy can avoid re-encoding, but it is only appropriate when the actual codecs and container work with the chosen ingest and muxer. The file’s metadata alone does not establish that stream copy will work; test it with the specific recording before relying on it for a service.

Test and monitor the broadcast

  1. Start a test broadcast before the service using your channel’s test workflow or an appropriately private/unlisted event.
  2. Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview and confirm both video and audio are present. Watch and listen to representative moving video and sermon audio, not just a static opening frame.
  3. Review YouTube’s stream health and resolve warnings before the event. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health during a broadcast.
  4. Once the test is satisfactory, run the intended service stream and keep Live Control Room available to monitor reception.

A command that stays active without an obvious error is not proof that YouTube has received a usable stream. Confirm the preview and health status on YouTube’s side.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
FFmpeg says an encoder is unavailable The installed build does not include the requested encoder. Check ffmpeg -encoders. Use a build with the required encoder or adapt the command to an available, YouTube-supported option.
YouTube does not show an incoming stream The ingest URL or key may be wrong, the destination may be malformed, or the endpoint may not be supported by the build. Copy the current URL and key again from Live Control Room, ensure the key stays private, and verify RTMPS support if using an RTMPS endpoint.
Video arrives but audio is absent or unclear The file may lack an audio stream, use an unexpected stream layout, or have a recording-level problem. Inspect with ffprobe, listen to the source, and confirm the Live Control Room preview receives clear audio before the service.
Audio and video are out of sync The source recording may already be unsynchronized or the selected conversion may not suit it. Check synchronization in the source first, then test the exact output command with representative content and inspect YouTube’s received preview.
Stream health reports a bitrate or connection issue The chosen output rate may exceed the connection’s sustainable capacity, or the output settings may not match YouTube’s guidance. Check the current YouTube bitrate table for the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate, and test the intended output while monitoring stream health.
The machine struggles while encoding Transcoding can demand more CPU than the machine can sustain at the selected resolution and frame rate. Test before the event; consider a lower supported output mode or a compatible stream-copy workflow if the source streams and container permit it.
The file ends before the live event should This command sends one input file once; it does not loop the recording. For a repeating service feed, arrange and test a deliberate looping or playlist workflow rather than assuming this single-file command will repeat.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

Before broadcasting, make sure the church has the rights or permissions needed for the sermon recording and any music, readings, artwork or other material embedded in it. A prerecorded file being sent through FFmpeg does not itself establish permission to stream its contents. YouTube may also apply its channel and live-stream policies; review the current rules for the channel and content rather than treating a successful technical test as policy approval.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than a one-time FFmpeg broadcast, StreamNeo runs uploaded recordings from the cloud: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off, and StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. Files stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; it is one free day per account.
