To set up phone alerts for missile or civil-defense warnings, first confirm which alert system your local emergency-management authority uses, then enable the matching option in your phone’s settings. There is no single worldwide setting or opt-out rule: phone menus, eligible devices, and whether alerts require registration vary by country. Phone alerts are one warning channel, not a guarantee that every warning will reach every device.
Check which warning system your local authority uses
Start with your national or local civil-defense or emergency-management authority. Look for its instructions on mobile alerts and whether it uses Cell Broadcast, a carrier-based alert service, a registration-based service, or an app. Confirm that the system covers the threat you care about; the sources available for this guide do not establish that every country sends missile warnings to phones.
Do not assume that an app, an account, or an enabled phone setting is required—or that any one of them is enough. For example, UK guidance says its Emergency Alerts service does not require sign-up or an app, while Greece describes automatic Cell Broadcast alerts as well as registration-based alternatives. Those are country-specific arrangements, not universal rules.
Turn on the relevant alerts on your phone
Android
- Open Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts, following Google’s general Android instructions: Google Android Help: Control wireless emergency alerts.
- Review the alert types and enable the categories relevant to your region. The available categories and controls can differ by device.
- Check the options for alert sound, vibration, past alerts, and—if shown—monthly tests.
If the menu path does not match your phone, search Settings for “emergency alerts,” “wireless emergency alerts,” or “emergency broadcasts.” Keep the phone’s software up to date. Google says its monthly-test control is in the same area but requires Developer options; enabling Developer options can affect other settings. Avoid dialer codes or unrelated developer settings from outdated or third-party instructions.

iPhone
The exact current menu path across iPhone models, iOS versions, and local warning systems is not established here. Search Settings for “emergency alerts” and follow the current instructions from Apple and your local authority. Do not assume that a toggle shown in one country or iOS version has the same name or effect elsewhere.
Understand what phone alerts can—and cannot—guarantee
An enabled setting does not ensure that an alert will arrive. Delivery depends on the local system, device compatibility, connection and power state, and whether the phone is in a coverage area. Follow your authority’s own delivery guidance rather than treating one country’s technical rules as global.

United Kingdom example
UK Emergency Alerts use mobile phone masts. According to the UK government, compatible phones in range can receive alerts without mobile data or Wi-Fi, and users do not need to sign up or install an app. Its guidance lists iPhones running iOS 14.5 or later and Android phones and tablets running Android 11 or later, while noting that some earlier Android phones may work. It advises keeping software current. UK guidance also says powered-off, Wi-Fi-only, incompatible, or 2G/3G-connected devices will not receive alerts, and airplane mode may prevent reception: UK government: Emergency Alerts.

Greece’s 112 service says updated smartphones receive written Cell Broadcast alerts with an alarm sound. It says the feature is automatically enabled on mobile phones available in Greece from December 2019 onward when smartphones have current manufacturer firmware. Its FAQ also describes registered SMS, email, and voice-alarm options, and says many smartphones provide access to alert history: Greece 112 FAQ.

New Zealand example
New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says authorised emergency agencies send Emergency Mobile Alerts to capable phones through targeted cell towers. Local Civil Defence Emergency Management groups choose channels for local circumstances, and NEMA describes radio, television, websites, social media, apps, and sirens among the channels used for warnings. An official warning may not arrive in time in some circumstances. NEMA’s advice is: “Trust your danger sense, don’t wait for an official alert.” This is general emergency advice, not a missile-specific instruction; use the relevant local guidance for the particular threat: New Zealand NEMA: Alerts and warnings.

Choose at least one additional official warning source recommended by your local authority, such as radio, television, a government website, an official app, or a siren. Which channel is useful depends on the hazard and location. A battery-powered emergency radio can provide access to radio broadcasts when other channels are unavailable, but it is supplementary: it does not receive phone alerts and does not replace local government instructions.

- Keep relevant apps and phone software current if your local system uses them.
- Know which official broadcast or local channel to use if your phone has no service or power.
