Set up CI for an n98-magerun2 plugin in the plugin’s own repository: define the PHP and Magento or Mage-OS versions it supports, install dependencies from its Composer lockfile, and run the checks its own configuration defines. n98-magerun2 provides a module API and module-development commands, but the official documentation reviewed here does not provide a ready-made CI workflow or a universal plugin test command.
What n98-magerun2’s official documentation provides
n98-magerun2 is a Magento 2 command-line tool whose commands can be extended through a module API, according to the project README. Its development documentation lists module-development commands including dev:module:create and dev:module:detect-composer-dependencies. These help with module development; they are not a CI recipe.
The README’s composer install and ./build.sh instructions describe building the n98-magerun2 core project, not testing an independent plugin. The official material reviewed does not specify a third-party plugin’s PHPUnit invocation, fixture package, or GitHub Actions workflow. Use your plugin’s own Composer scripts and test configuration rather than assuming those core build steps apply.
Decide what your plugin promises to support
Before writing a workflow, document the versions your plugin claims to work with. Check its composer.json, lockfile, test configuration, and any existing installation or support documentation. Record the supported PHP versions and the relevant n98-magerun2 and Magento or Mage-OS combinations. The project compatibility page is a guide to the core tool’s compatibility, not a substitute for defining your plugin’s support policy: n98-magerun2 compatibility guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compatibility boundaries change across releases. As displayed on that page on October 4, 2026, n98-magerun2 v9.5.1 was identified as the last compatible version for PHP 8.1; v9.0.0 or later was required for PHP 8.4 and 8.5; and v10.0.0 raised the minimum PHP version to 8.2. The same page listed v9.0.0 or later for Adobe Commerce/Magento OS 2.4.9+ and 2.4.8+, and Mage-OS 1.2.x+; it listed v7.5.0 as the last compatible release for Adobe Commerce/Magento OS 2.4.4. These are core-tool boundaries shown on the documentation page at that date, not claims that every plugin supports those combinations. Check the page again when updating your workflow.
Build a CI matrix that reflects real support claims
A useful matrix tests the combinations your plugin says it supports, without automatically testing every possible permutation. Include the minimum supported PHP version and a current supported version. Add n98-magerun2 or commerce-platform versions when the plugin’s code, dependencies, or integration behavior makes those versions meaningful to test.

| Check type | What it establishes | When to include it |
|---|---|---|
| Unit or isolated automated tests | Whether the plugin’s code behaves as expected without requiring a full commerce installation. | Include when the plugin has tests that can run independently; follow its configured test command. |
| Integration tests | Whether the plugin works with the specific n98-magerun2 and Magento or Mage-OS setup under test. | Include when plugin behavior depends on those components and the repository defines the required environment or fixtures. |
Keep the matrix focused: each row should represent a support claim or a meaningful compatibility risk. A broad Cartesian product of PHP, tool, and platform versions adds maintenance cost if combinations are not actually supported or tested for a reason. The n98-magerun2 compatibility guidance describes the core tool’s supported environments; your plugin’s matrix should be narrower where its own dependencies or declared support require it.
Configure the workflow from the plugin repository
- Inspect Composer metadata. Review the plugin’s
composer.jsonfor PHP and package constraints, scripts, and dependencies. Use the repository’s committed lockfile when one exists and is intended to govern CI installs. - Identify the project’s actual checks. Read the test configuration and Composer scripts to find the commands the plugin already uses. Do not assume a PHPUnit command or copy the core project’s build instructions; the official plugin-development documentation does not prescribe either for third-party modules.
- Separate isolated and environment-dependent tests. Run fast tests independently from checks that need an installed Magento or Mage-OS application. Add integration setup only when the plugin’s own design requires it, and document any required fixtures, services, or secrets in the repository.
- Select supported matrix entries. Choose PHP and, where relevant, n98-magerun2 and platform versions that match the plugin’s declared support. Avoid presenting a core compatibility entry as a plugin guarantee.
- Run checks on the repository’s normal events. Configure the CI host to run the selected checks on pull requests and pushes as appropriate for the project. The exact workflow syntax and runner configuration depend on the CI host; the official sources cited here do not publish a canonical GitHub Actions file.
- Keep compatibility current. Revisit the matrix when updating supported dependencies or when n98-magerun2’s compatibility guidance changes. The releases page is dynamic, so consult it directly rather than relying on a previously reported latest release: n98-magerun2 releases.
Why there is no universal copy-and-paste test command
Independent plugins can have different Composer scripts, test frameworks, dependency constraints, and integration requirements. The official development docs name module-development commands, but do not define a test runner command or shared fixture process for third-party plugins. Consequently, a command that is correct for one plugin may fail or provide incomplete coverage for another.

Use the commands already declared by the plugin, and make the workflow’s setup reflect its dependency and integration design. If the project lacks documented test commands, establish and document those in the plugin repository before treating a CI configuration as reproducible. n98-magerun2’s compatibility page also notes that the core tool is automatically tested against multiple PHP versions and runs on Linux distributions and macOS; that describes the core project’s testing, not a required operating-system matrix for every plugin.
